Could Lakers have interest in Cal?

I’m the guy that not only thinks it would be difficult to find a can’t miss type coach but also believes that fans will not give them the proper time to turn things around, just my opinion.

I think those are legit concerns.
But no matter when Cal cal’s it quits theyre risks we’re going to have to take.

If a coaches ceiling is not a title then it’s not good enough to justify the potential for seasons like last.

It might be time to rip that band aid off.

Man...I know this will end up a baseless pipe dream to get Cal out of here (almost like when Tubby left) and no huge buyout. And the best part is AD would be able to stay on injury reserve all the time as Cal could care less about dudes playing thru any semblance of an injury.

If anything this will cause cal to make so kind of a statement. If he doesn’t shoot it down fast he’s gone. He can’t afford a day to go by with noise like this. Nba regular season ends next week so I’d expect the lakers to make a quick change if that’s what they plan to do.

i do not absolutely do not want Chris holtmann in Lexington. That’s a big fn hell no. Honestly Barney needs to go on sabbatical if this comes to pass or he need to be fired. He will screw it up for sure and I don’t want him anywhere around our bb program. No way

That makes way more sense then the other posts you’ve made about it. That’s completely rational concerns.

There is some stuff to back this up on Twitter if it does happen Mitch throw the damn bank at musselman
Musselman has a non compete in his contract with Arkansas where he can not seek or accept employment from any SEC school. He has a small buyout of 2 million so it would make a ton of sense if it weren’t for the non compete.

Kentucky can do that I think he would come if Kentucky ever showed interest

This wreaks of the usual college coach facing scrutiny wanting to drum up "please don't go" and this time around it's not going to work at all. Nobody is buying that in order:

1. Lakers want him
2. He'd give up the $ Kentucky is giving him/his family
3. He's a "god" at Kentucky? This Devaney doesn't sound like he's up to date with things

I've seen this ploy far too often and the fact is, nobody cares. This isn't the time to do it, yet the coaches always need a "hug" to reassure themselves. Get out on the road this week and WORK. 63 yr old retreads from CBB aren't the rage of NBA basketball and certainly aren't going to ail what the Lakers need to fix things.
What it is is it’s recruiting time and other coaches or schools are breaking out the Cal to the NBA rumors or getting the articles written by others. I can’t see there being that much demand for Cal to the NBA. Also don’t see Hom wanting to leave.

I’m playing the BS card. This sounds like Cal’s camp putting something out there. He’s got to know BBN is big time p!$$ed off at him. This feels like a ploy for UK fans to say oh we really didn’t mean anything. Please don’t go. If he wants to go, then go. I won’t lose one wink of sleep over it.
I've lost way more sleep over his coaching than I will ever lose over him leaving.

Jerry Stackhouse would be my first call if I were MB and Cal chooses to leave.
I have nothing against Stackhouse. He seems to do more with less if you know what I mean and unlike Triple C he knows X’s and O’s. But he doesn’t seem to have a personality at all and the BBN may not be a good fit for that. Also, his resume isn’t very good at this point.

I have been a huge fan of Cal’s but it really looks like he refuses to make some necessary changes. All great coaches have to adapt and he seems to be resistant to change. I have no idea if this article holds any weight but if so, you would think he’d jump on the first flight to LA.

Not sure who would be a better coach and recruiter, but I’m open to the idea and I thought I’d never say that.
I agree but he keeps ramming that hard head into the brick wall!!

College basketball isn’t college football. With the transfer portal a good coach will be winning right away. Look at the guy from az. This isn’t brain surgery

I am sure he would be several tiers down the list and we missed on a whole lot if we get him, the main reason I would stray away is if he has any resemblance of success and Hubert Davis faulted I imagine he would jump at the chance to go back to unc, much like Roy Williams did.

imagine giving a guy a chance and then he bolts and wins three titles at unc.

Because nba guys today don’t really do much. Cal is actually perfect for the NBA. He’s a good spokesman, the players would trust him, he’s a showtime kind of guy who makes good pr sense.

It’s actually an excellent fit. That’s Lebron’s team Cal is a perfect suit for it. And he’s coached AD, maybe try and make a hire toward getting that magic back.
I'm a Lakers fan and I hope they come get him, UK would fix this mess and we could laugh at Cal alittle longer while he gets his *** handed to him in the western conference. Lakers could do alot better than him.

Buyout would probably void the no compete bc when the contract is bought out there is no longer a contract

If he could right our ship and rebuild our program, it would be worth it in my opinion. UNC passed on him.

He may not be too happy with them, much like Tommy Amaker and Duke. He may love UK.

All of our successful coaches came from another school other than Joe B.

Nah you can’t take Stackhouse and I don’t get the opinion anyway. He’s not that good.

Kansas greatly diminished themselves going down the road. In a way they were a stepping stone for Williams until he went back to UNC. I want no part of UK replicating that, where they can say they’re just “different” and essentially superior.

There’s no reason to go into the UNC coaching tree. For starters UK needs to figure out how to get their own going. For another there are too many better options and guy like Stackhouse anyway. I just can’t see the fit at all.

In the nba all cal has to do it motivate and let the players play. It’s easy money. He doesn’t have to recruit doesn’t have to recalibrate every year. You don’t have to be the best x and o coach to be successful in the nba especially with the Lakers talent.
So why would they fire their coach? He can't just roll the balls out? You can't argue that they're going to let go of Vogel for being a bad coach--but they don't care that Cal is a bad coach.

The Lakers have a ton of talent and a bad team. The Coach sets the offense and the defense. It's on the players to actually execute it.

But for a board that sits here and complains about how Cal doesn't run an offense like the NBA--you guys are NOW telling me the NBA just lets the players do what they want and there's no offense ran.

In this article a couple days ago stackhouse refers to UNC as “we” so F no for him at UK

Cals biggest asset is his ability to motivate. Vogel is not the most inspirational guy. Motivating guys who have won titles and make tons of money is all that needs to be done for the Lakers.

as for running an offense. Nba teams rarely friggin practice. The games are the teachers and yes you put your best 5 out and roll em out. Those guys on the Lakers know what to do. Nba coaches are not geniuses. It’s all about personelle and getting them to leave it all on the floor

Yeah, still think this is ridiculous.

LeBron James is one of the greatest ever. You think he needs a motivator?
Davis--hall of famer--needs a motivator?
Westbrook--hall of famer--needs a motivator?
Carmelo--hall of famer--needs a motivator?

If only they had motivation.

Kobe didn't need a motivator at all. In fact, he was the Laker coach on the floor for the last several years of his career.

Yes! Look at cal. Hall of famer paid like pro athletes and he needs a motivator. Being the UK coach and getting paid with a crazy contract made him lazy. 2015 took his soul. You ever heard of needing a fresh start? The Lakers Cal UK all need a fresh start. Lebron what does he have driving him to win more? Davis has a title and plenty of money in the bank. Why play hard? Yes they need a motivator and someone who can bring them together as a team. These are the things Cal excels at.

Kobe was a lifetime laker. He wasn’t a gun for hire so he had a high level of intrinsic motivation to carry him. Plus it didn’t hurt learning from the zen man on how to sustain success.

Lol!

LeBron’s been chasing Jordan for 19 years but finally lost motivation. Now all he needs is John Calipari to find it again. GTFO.

Assistant coaches in the NBA do alot of the work. Cal could get by but there would be some things he would need to improve on, his coaching staff could carry him through a few seasons then he could retire after his NBA stuff goes south.

This story smells like something Calipari or his agent fed to some internet based sportswriters as a "Oh yeah?" rebuttal to Barnhart's comments about competing and winning championships. We already know Calipari and Barnhart aren't exactly BFF's. Call it a ratcheting up of the cold war between those two.

I know a lot of you guys are hot on Musselman. But, why would you want him over Scott Drew? We've seen that Drew can attract 5 star guys and build a championship team in freakin' Waco, Texas of all places. He has the ability to bring guys in that mesh well as a cohesive unit. And he actually has won a championship, unlike any of the other names being mentioned.
I have to believe he would LOVE to get the UK job!

Either way, something has to give, and soon. Rupp is going to be very empty next year. Fan morale is terrible. The roster is only marginally interesting and we have recruits that haven't even set foot on campus already talking about getting out of Lexington ASAP. The program/brand is starting to suffer.
