Back then baseball was a religion... Leave'em alone and let them do what they need to do first. Then they come around and are cordial. Think of it as how Mike played basketball. Mike took no prisoners and did the game his way or the highway...
Players more or less policed themselves. If a Cardinal threw at Mays, a Giant might throw at Musial. If Gibson hit Mays, Gibson had to bat later, so a Giant might throw at him. A player might bunt down the first base line and then spike or knee the pitcher. Hitters did not have all the protective gear they wear today. It was a different game.

Ever here of the National Bowling League? It operated a couple of years in the early sixties in opposition to the PBA. A few big name bowlers participated, but most of the very best stayed with the PBA. I mention it because I read Mickey Mantle and Yoga Berra were both drafted by teams. They both owned bowling alleys, but I don't know if they participated in the league.

Never heard of that league and I was into bowling pretty heavily back when I was a late teen and early 20's. Just at the end of Dick Weber and when Earl Anthony and Mark Roth were going head on at each other. Earl the detailed, precise lefty while Mark Roth (righty) nearly threw the bowling ball down the lanes. (Many others) I made decent dough bowling money leagues in Detroit (Surrounding cities. Lincoln Park, Wyandotte,...), I used to make 40 or 50 bucks a week bowling. (I think minimum wage back then was a buck and a quarter or something like that.)

HAHA, maybe one day I will tell you how I got one of BL Taylor's son's fighting mad at me in E'Town at Dixietown lanes later on after I got out of the Army... (We were drunk and betting per throw and I got him down near three hundred bucks...before he "broke even". Won't go into details but I was in his Dad's establishment and things happened.)

My left knee injury messed me up pretty good with bowling.

Have a fine evening...

Morning D-Leaguers!

Wife is disgruntled this morning. More fireworks were set off last night because Saturday night it stormed at around 10:30pm and so many did not use up their fireworks. Having to be at work by 07:30am during workdays, she was in bed by 9:30pm last night and they were shooting them off late last night. She got out of bed at 10:30pm to try and sleep on the couch. Did not help so she came back to bed until she could. I went out when it started and yes, there were fireworks going off all around.

Not much going on for me today other than the normal.

You folks be careful out there if going out and God Bless.

Hello All,

I planned to be up by now but was rapid-fire text by my oldest at about 7:30 (43 years old and has no conscience of others.) Yeah, PO'd at myself that I have not shown them better over the years...

What a day, what a day... In any event, I am thankful but will mute mine and My Darling's phone for about a week and see if they will one day understand...

At it, at it again... ;)

They failed to get a TV contract, so they tried to make it team bowling based on gate receipts. They set up in arenas instead of bowling alleys. Buzz Fazio was their biggest star along with Billy Welu. They offered Don Carter a thousand a week, half interest in a goat farm and a % of the gate, but he turned them down. Maybe 1960-62. I read back then, one in seventeen adults bowled in a league.

Detroit had a team that set up an arena at Thunder bowl Lanes in Allen Park. Ed Lubanski was their star. I had never heard of the NBL, but I have done a little reading on it.

I remember those names. I cannot TELL you how many times I bowled in that facilty... Mostly church leagues but I bowled leterally four or five days a week on those lanes. (I never counted the church leagues I bowled in, I was the youngest and I bowled with people much older than me but sure did enjoy them...)

My sister and BIL lived in Lincoln Park just down the street. That is why I stated Lincoln Park...

Went to churches in Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and River Rouge, MI....

Read a Stan Musial story. When Stan came up as a rookie, players did not even have helmets, let alone other protective gear. They were playing the Dodgers and Van Mungo was pitching. Van was known as a head hunter and he decided to intimidate the rookie. His first two pitches were head high and Stan had to hit the dirt. The third pitch was lined into the gap for a triple. The ump yelled, "Hey Van, you sure scared the hell out of that kid didn't you?".

Good morning folks. Overcast and muggy in the east. Out for a sweaty walk.

Talked to my son a long time yesterday before he had to head back out to the fire line in southwestern Colorado. He said overnight Monday his crew managed to clear and backburn a fire break right in front of some houses that for now has saved those properties. He was back out there last night.

Just another work day for me. Nothing much to add. I hope you folks have a great day.

Hello All,

Up and at it earlier. Getting ready for a cup of coffee. My Darling and I are planning to head out shortly to take care of some things. No biggies but our desires. I still have bunches to do. I never installed the RO systems, I just took the days off. I am nearing feeling human again... I will get them installed some time this week as my girls need them.

Have a blessed day and a day that will cause you to give thanks. Give thanks anyway because God is still in charge...

I only played legion ball regularly but did have a tryout period with the Tigers. Saw many dugout fights or fights between teams. I guess instilling your will was the key back then. They were in it to win it... I guess by whatever means. It was to me part of the game... I did love baseball back then...

The expansion draft watered down the pro game too much. I saw so much minor league or less than minor league play after that I quit watching it. I see some clips now and ask how in the _ _ _ _ did that player make it to the majors. No way...

Anyway have a fine fine day/...

Being a lefty........I was a fan of Earl Anthony.......I tried to copy his swing......I ended up being a cranker.........until my elbow and shoulder told me I could no longer bowl......I bowled three leagues a week for several years.....never was a betting man.........(didn't have the money)......

Yes Sir, I flat out loved Earl Anthony's delivery, I tried mimicking that as a righty. I never bet either as I never wanted to get hooked. (The leagues I bowled in gave out money per how your team or individual's did scoring-wise during event's/ games. I was in a good situation and I carried a high average, just never did bowl a 300 though I did hit 290 a bunch of times.)

Did get hooked on lottery ticket's for a while as a bug man back in your area BUT, I challenged God and he fixed me...HAHA... (It was back during a flood in your area (Bullit county and in particular Mt. Washington. I did a lot of termite inspections and other work for that main bank in Mount Washington. They were holding a raffle. I bought ten tickets and put them up and forgot about them. They were helping flood victims....so, I donated.

Anyway, after that, I saw I had an issue buying lottery tickets so while driving I told the Lord..(I will never forget it..) (I said it exactly this way, out loud.) "If I can win a thousand dollars, I will never buy another lottery ticket...". I had lottery ticket's on my mind.)

It wasn't a day or two later I got a call from that bank. (It was several weeks after I had purchased them. I totally forgot I had.) They told me I won the grand prize for that raffle.... $1000.00 (I still have the picture of me holding the money somewhere. (If I find it, I will post it.)

Needless to say, God is in control and though I had the lottery in mind, I got my thousand dollars, God's way, not my way... Never had an urge again to buy a lottery ticket. I'd be in a bad shape if I ever did after promising God...

I worked at Cardinal Lanes in Paducah for a few years while in college and employees bowled free, so I bowled a lot. Was "city champion" scratch one year and another year won a tournament that had a few regional PBA members in it. Needed to play an outside line if I was going to be competitive though.

Play execution in Reds-Phils tonight I don't recall ever seeing before.

Double play ball hit to 3rd by Reds & De La Cruz goes into 2nd standing on the RF side of base, touches it, & then overruns 2nd by 3-4 steps. WTH is that? Who does that? Anyway he beats the throw & is ruled safe but they get runner at first. Phils argue DLC interfered but how could that be? He beat the throw & they got the runner at first.

Yes, I was a glutton for even watching.

Morning D-Leaguers!

Hot.

All of this posting about bowling reminds me of when my wife was bowling on a team from the trucking company she worked for before we got married. It was a women's team and while cordial to me, they were not particularly friendly. It was not until years later after we got married that I found out why. One of the ladies she used to work with had also gotten a job at Sill in the same department where my wife was then working and while I was visiting the office one day, she pulled me aside and apologized. I ask her for what and she told me that her and the other ladies had told my wife in those days that she could do better than me and that I was too old and did not make enough money. I was 40 and she was 24 when we started dating. She was now telling me after getting to know me that they were wrong. I could have told them that.

As far as me bowling, I bowled on unit team in Germany for about a year or so and I don't think I have ever bowled above 200. I know my average was around 160 or so, so I never bowled much after that other than occasionally with my wife when just having a fun day or something like that. I have however in recent days considered it for when my softball playing days are over.

Hump day folks so go get at it.

Be careful out there and God Bless.

Good morning folks. Still overcast and muggy in the east.

We continue to work from home through the end of the week.

Trying to get into the World Cup to fill the summer sports gap. There is a great deal of drama to it, without any doubt. I was certain Egypt had put Argentina out, going up 2-0 with only about ten minutes to play. But after being shut out for nearly 80 minutes Argentina manages to score three times in around ten minutes.

The heartbreaking loss by Colombia gave me a flashback to 1994: I was working in Bogota, Colombia. These were the days of the out of control cocaine cartel murder sprees. I was single in those days and had met a woman working in the US Embassy and took her out for a drink.

She takes me to this very nice sports bar with a number of televisions, all tuned to the Colombia-US game taking place in the States. So, a little drunk, I start cheering for the "USA!" That was the infamous game where the Colombia player kicked an "own goal" and the heavly underdog Americans won. So, the bar is getting more and more rowdy with angry energy, and I'm getting louder in my cheering for the USA, when suddenly the woman grabs my arm, says, "leave some money for the check" and hustles me out of the place and rapidly out of range. Then she tells me that the bar was owned by one of the cartels, and she was overhearing guys loudly talking about "killing the gringo," -- all lost on me as I don't speak Spanish well at all.

I spent much of that year (1994) in Rwanda and Haiti, which were fairly dangerous, so I didn't take her too seriously. But, as you may recall, that Colombia player who kicked the "own goal" WAS assassinated immediately on return home. I don't think he even got very far from the airport. So, they do take their Futbol seriously...

You all have a good day.

On the bowling, one time the owner paid Don Johnson and Nelson Burton Jr to come and put on an exhibition (they are both hall of famers). He put on mini tournaments to win a chance to actually bowl against them In a handicap match and win a prize donated by a local merchant. My "line" was hitting the third board about five foot past the arrows and angle the ball toward the pocket. I was a decent bowler, but needed some room for error. Burton played to hit the last half of the first board (right next to the gutter) about ten feet past the arrows. That is how accurate one of the top pros was.

Talking about finalizing paperwork. I just got an email from my realtor. The buyers just got the official paper work from the state of Ky. The words were all spelled right this time. KY misspelled a word on their license last time and the process had to start over. Now maybe I can trade some headaches for money, with one less property to keep up. The bad news is the bank has approved their loan, but wants some extra time to reprocess paperwork because of all the state caused delays.

Things run dirty in real estate Sir. Guarantee someone was making money off the delays you are having. (Seriously) While I have my license in escrow in Virginia, I have it with a local large real estate firm to where I can receive referal fee's...

I had my real estate license in Kentucky and now in Viriginia for a lot of years but I mostly use my license for my own transactions... (To save money) Or for my children.

While I know a couple realtors I'd do business with, I shy away from them as in general it is a seriously cut-throat industry (Real Estate Sales), too cut-throat for me...

My Darling and I own a few properties but I mostly help others save money giving them my referal fee. Just do not feel good about taking it knowing what I know. (I guess I do use the goodwill in the giving though so...I do get something.)

The same with lawyers, I knew hundreds and I mean hundreds in DC and the surrounding areas while with USDA and the DOD and never met one I liked or would consider having a relationship with as far as a friendship. Just too much loving money and the "charge".. Only one lawyer I'd ever call my friend and I went to church with that guy back in Radcliff Kentucky. I still stay in contact with him as our kids grew up together. He had his license and practiced but did other things for his bread and butter...

I will stop. I DO hope all works out and is finalized soon...

Thanks. The guys run a medical marijuana distributorship. They already have a license in Tenn, Missouri, now KY and I forget where, but one other state. They want my building because it is large and centrally located to deliver to St Louis, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville and etc. I been thinking someone who dislikes the law allowing them to do that has had a hand in it. A few years ago, about two miles down the road from me, some outfit started building a huge plant that was going to process locally grown stuff. They and local farmers spent millions preparing. About halfway through construction, building stopped and it has been setting there idle for a couple of years. Not sure why it was halted, but at the time, I thought the county and state wanted it.

@AustinTXCat and others...

Thought I'd post other pics I had come across.

This one is Gary and Virgil's family in their entirity. The only one left is Phyllis but this is a long ago picture. Gary is the baby and Virgil along with his Dad and Mom Uncle Fred and Aunt Arlene...

This was at their house on the top of the hill after you crossed the tracks in Shawanee. That place was built up a lot with house back a long time ago. We didn't drive this area our last trip.

This is while I lived in the Gap and this is my Grandpa standing in front of the Iron Furnace... Lewis Teague

This picture was taken from the apartment we had above the gas station when we lived there of the one room school in the Gap that is now the Cumberland Gap City Hall...

The bottom picture is the side of the gas station..

Thought some may like to see these. I have more and will post them when I get the chance... (I was actually looking for the pic I had taken in Mt. Washington where I won the raffle but no luck yet.)

Morning D-leaguers!

Hot... Wash, rinse, and repeat.

Wife was watching the Reds with me last night (she has been watching a lot this year) and ask me why is it that they can't hit and play like this every game. I told her that every dog has its day and the Reds have a few like this every year, but it is not the norm.

Have 2 games in Chickasha this evening, hope this teams shows up this week like last week. We have not had the same players week to week, so who knows.

May cut the grass today since it will be the cooler day (mid to upper 90's) of the next 3 or so as triple digits are expected going forward.

Nothing follows... except may God Bless and keep you all safe today and beyond.

Good morning folks. Cooling off a bit in the east. I had a pleasant walk this morning, then a nice big slice of watermelon. All is well.

just another work from home day. I’ll be fine with going back downtown next week. It’s a bit more stimulating.

Haven’t heard from my son yet today. After about ten days of long night shifts on the fire line, he’s probably getting to that stage past where adrenaline can keep you revving high rpms.

Hope you all have a good one.
