Back then baseball was a religion... Leave'em alone and let them do what they need to do first. Then they come around and are cordial. Think of it as how Mike played basketball. Mike took no prisoners and did the game his way or the highway...
Players more or less policed themselves. If a Cardinal threw at Mays, a Giant might throw at Musial. If Gibson hit Mays, Gibson had to bat later, so a Giant might throw at him. A player might bunt down the first base line and then spike or knee the pitcher. Hitters did not have all the protective gear they wear today. It was a different game.

Ever here of the National Bowling League? It operated a couple of years in the early sixties in opposition to the PBA. A few big name bowlers participated, but most of the very best stayed with the PBA. I mention it because I read Mickey Mantle and Yoga Berra were both drafted by teams. They both owned bowling alleys, but I don't know if they participated in the league.

Never heard of that league and I was into bowling pretty heavily back when I was a late teen and early 20's. Just at the end of Dick Weber and when Earl Anthony and Mark Roth were going head on at each other. Earl the detailed, precise lefty while Mark Roth (righty) nearly threw the bowling ball down the lanes. (Many others) I made decent dough bowling money leagues in Detroit (Surrounding cities. Lincoln Park, Wyandotte,...), I used to make 40 or 50 bucks a week bowling. (I think minimum wage back then was a buck and a quarter or something like that.)

HAHA, maybe one day I will tell you how I got one of BL Taylor's son's fighting mad at me in E'Town at Dixietown lanes later on after I got out of the Army... (We were drunk and betting per throw and I got him down near three hundred bucks...before he "broke even". Won't go into details but I was in his Dad's establishment and things happened.)

My left knee injury messed me up pretty good with bowling.

Have a fine evening...

Morning D-Leaguers!

Wife is disgruntled this morning. More fireworks were set off last night because Saturday night it stormed at around 10:30pm and so many did not use up their fireworks. Having to be at work by 07:30am during workdays, she was in bed by 9:30pm last night and they were shooting them off late last night. She got out of bed at 10:30pm to try and sleep on the couch. Did not help so she came back to bed until she could. I went out when it started and yes, there were fireworks going off all around.

Not much going on for me today other than the normal.

You folks be careful out there if going out and God Bless.

Hello All,

I planned to be up by now but was rapid-fire text by my oldest at about 7:30 (43 years old and has no conscience of others.) Yeah, PO'd at myself that I have not shown them better over the years...

What a day, what a day... In any event, I am thankful but will mute mine and My Darling's phone for about a week and see if they will one day understand...

At it, at it again... ;)

They failed to get a TV contract, so they tried to make it team bowling based on gate receipts. They set up in arenas instead of bowling alleys. Buzz Fazio was their biggest star along with Billy Welu. They offered Don Carter a thousand a week, half interest in a goat farm and a % of the gate, but he turned them down. Maybe 1960-62. I read back then, one in seventeen adults bowled in a league.

Detroit had a team that set up an arena at Thunder bowl Lanes in Allen Park. Ed Lubanski was their star. I had never heard of the NBL, but I have done a little reading on it.

I remember those names. I cannot TELL you how many times I bowled in that facilty... Mostly church leagues but I bowled leterally four or five days a week on those lanes. (I never counted the church leagues I bowled in, I was the youngest and I bowled with people much older than me but sure did enjoy them...)

My sister and BIL lived in Lincoln Park just down the street. That is why I stated Lincoln Park...

Went to churches in Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and River Rouge, MI....

I knew a guy who played at WKU. Bunning came in and talked about beaning people and my friend said the WKU players we’re disgusted.

Read a Stan Musial story. When Stan came up as a rookie, players did not even have helmets, let alone other protective gear. They were playing the Dodgers and Van Mungo was pitching. Van was known as a head hunter and he decided to intimidate the rookie. His first two pitches were head high and Stan had to hit the dirt. The third pitch was lined into the gap for a triple. The ump yelled, "Hey Van, you sure scared the hell out of that kid didn't you?".

Good morning folks. Overcast and muggy in the east. Out for a sweaty walk.

Talked to my son a long time yesterday before he had to head back out to the fire line in southwestern Colorado. He said overnight Monday his crew managed to clear and backburn a fire break right in front of some houses that for now has saved those properties. He was back out there last night.

Just another work day for me. Nothing much to add. I hope you folks have a great day.

Hello All,

Up and at it earlier. Getting ready for a cup of coffee. My Darling and I are planning to head out shortly to take care of some things. No biggies but our desires. I still have bunches to do. I never installed the RO systems, I just took the days off. I am nearing feeling human again... I will get them installed some time this week as my girls need them.

Have a blessed day and a day that will cause you to give thanks. Give thanks anyway because God is still in charge...

I only played legion ball regularly but did have a tryout period with the Tigers. Saw many dugout fights or fights between teams. I guess instilling your will was the key back then. They were in it to win it... I guess by whatever means. It was to me part of the game... I did love baseball back then...

The expansion draft watered down the pro game too much. I saw so much minor league or less than minor league play after that I quit watching it. I see some clips now and ask how in the _ _ _ _ did that player make it to the majors. No way...

Anyway have a fine fine day/...

Being a lefty........I was a fan of Earl Anthony.......I tried to copy his swing......I ended up being a cranker.........until my elbow and shoulder told me I could no longer bowl......I bowled three leagues a week for several years.....never was a betting man.........(didn't have the money)......

Yes Sir, I flat out loved Earl Anthony's delivery, I tried mimicking that as a righty. I never bet either as I never wanted to get hooked. (The leagues I bowled in gave out money per how your team or individual's did scoring-wise during event's/ games. I was in a good situation and I carried a high average, just never did bowl a 300 though I did hit 290 a bunch of times.)

Did get hooked on lottery ticket's for a while as a bug man back in your area BUT, I challenged God and he fixed me...HAHA... (It was back during a flood in your area (Bullit county and in particular Mt. Washington. I did a lot of termite inspections and other work for that main bank in Mount Washington. They were holding a raffle. I bought ten tickets and put them up and forgot about them. They were helping flood victims....so, I donated.

Anyway, after that, I saw I had an issue buying lottery tickets so while driving I told the Lord..(I will never forget it..) (I said it exactly this way, out loud.) "If I can win a thousand dollars, I will never buy another lottery ticket...". I had lottery ticket's on my mind.)

It wasn't a day or two later I got a call from that bank. (It was several weeks after I had purchased them. I totally forgot I had.) They told me I won the grand prize for that raffle.... $1000.00 (I still have the picture of me holding the money somewhere. (If I find it, I will post it.)

Needless to say, God is in control and though I had the lottery in mind, I got my thousand dollars, God's way, not my way... Never had an urge again to buy a lottery ticket. I'd be in a bad shape if I ever did after promising God...

I worked at Cardinal Lanes in Paducah for a few years while in college and employees bowled free, so I bowled a lot. Was "city champion" scratch one year and another year won a tournament that had a few regional PBA members in it. Needed to play an outside line if I was going to be competitive though.
