Players more or less policed themselves. If a Cardinal threw at Mays, a Giant might throw at Musial. If Gibson hit Mays, Gibson had to bat later, so a Giant might throw at him. A player might bunt down the first base line and then spike or knee the pitcher. Hitters did not have all the protective gear they wear today. It was a different game.
Ever here of the National Bowling League? It operated a couple of years in the early sixties in opposition to the PBA. A few big name bowlers participated, but most of the very best stayed with the PBA. I mention it because I read Mickey Mantle and Yoga Berra were both drafted by teams. They both owned bowling alleys, but I don't know if they participated in the league.
Never heard of that league and I was into bowling pretty heavily back when I was a late teen and early 20's. Just at the end of Dick Weber and when Earl Anthony and Mark Roth were going head on at each other. Earl the detailed, precise lefty while Mark Roth (righty) nearly threw the bowling ball down the lanes. (Many others) I made decent dough bowling money leagues in Detroit (Surrounding cities. Lincoln Park, Wyandotte,...), I used to make 40 or 50 bucks a week bowling. (I think minimum wage back then was a buck and a quarter or something like that.)
HAHA, maybe one day I will tell you how I got one of BL Taylor's son's fighting mad at me in E'Town at Dixietown lanes later on after I got out of the Army... (We were drunk and betting per throw and I got him down near three hundred bucks...before he "broke even". Won't go into details but I was in his Dad's establishment and things happened.)
My left knee injury messed me up pretty good with bowling.

Wife is disgruntled this morning. More fireworks were set off last night because Saturday night it stormed at around 10:30pm and so many did not use up their fireworks. Having to be at work by 07:30am during workdays, she was in bed by 9:30pm last night and they were shooting them off late last night. She got out of bed at 10:30pm to try and sleep on the couch. Did not help so she came back to bed until she could. I went out when it started and yes, there were fireworks going off all around.
Not much going on for me today other than the normal.
You folks be careful out there if going out and God Bless.

What a day, what a day... In any event, I am thankful but will mute mine and My Darling's phone for about a week and see if they will one day understand...

They failed to get a TV contract, so they tried to make it team bowling based on gate receipts. They set up in arenas instead of bowling alleys. Buzz Fazio was their biggest star along with Billy Welu. They offered Don Carter a thousand a week, half interest in a goat farm and a % of the gate, but he turned them down. Maybe 1960-62. I read back then, one in seventeen adults bowled in a league.
Detroit had a team that set up an arena at Thunder bowl Lanes in Allen Park. Ed Lubanski was their star. I had never heard of the NBL, but I have done a little reading on it.
I remember those names. I cannot TELL you how many times I bowled in that facilty... Mostly church leagues but I bowled leterally four or five days a week on those lanes. (I never counted the church leagues I bowled in, I was the youngest and I bowled with people much older than me but sure did enjoy them...)
My sister and BIL lived in Lincoln Park just down the street. That is why I stated Lincoln Park...
Went to churches in Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and River Rouge, MI....
Found out today my eye pressures are back up to the glaucoma danger risk level. Been using drops for 11 years. Dr. adding second eye drops regimen to see if that helps. If not, drainage ducts opening operation may be in my future.
I knew a guy who played at WKU. Bunning came in and talked about beaning people and my friend said the WKU players we’re disgusted.
Read a Stan Musial story. When Stan came up as a rookie, players did not even have helmets, let alone other protective gear. They were playing the Dodgers and Van Mungo was pitching. Van was known as a head hunter and he decided to intimidate the rookie. His first two pitches were head high and Stan had to hit the dirt. The third pitch was lined into the gap for a triple. The ump yelled, "Hey Van, you sure scared the hell out of that kid didn't you?".

Talked to my son a long time yesterday before he had to head back out to the fire line in southwestern Colorado. He said overnight Monday his crew managed to clear and backburn a fire break right in front of some houses that for now has saved those properties. He was back out there last night.
