Pike is an Embarassment

Last year we talked about how great Pike is, how he took us to two play offs in a row. Now after a rough start we want him crucified.
But I'm thinking how much blame is to be put
on the president or general manager.
Pike likes defense but they brought in 3 pt
shooters that don't do much other than shoot.
and the shooting is questionable at times.
Was the 3 pt. shooters what Pikiell wanted
or were they forced on him. Anyway I haven't
given up on Pike. Yet.

This. With our new practice facility, fan support and conference there is no reason why the majority of kids we bring in were beating out low majors for.
Unlike elite BB schools like duke ,NC, Kentucky etc. who always get 5 star recruits. Recruiting is tricky. A lot has to do with luck and getting 3 star recruits and hope they get better and you can coach them up . Fortunately unlike football if you can get 1 or 2 players a yr. you can build a solid program . New big practice facilities are a plus but who knows what goes on in a 17/18 yr. old kids mind. Plus you have to deal with parents ,AAU coaches and handlers . Its a brutal process if your not a elite BB school .

The title of this thread is totally off-putting, and quite frankly, is EMBARRASSING.

Our coach, who has effectively raised this program from the ashes, is NOT an embarrassment. I will grant that his misplaced hyperbole about this team is a bit embarrassing. It detracts from his credibility, and for the life of me I can’t figure out his angle for consistently throwing this stuff out there.

Like him or not he has a recruiting formula and sticks to it. Long wing-type players who can play multiple positions, and are “interchangeable”. The problem has been that his limitations as a recruiter has resulted in him getting that prototype guy, with unfortunately limited quickness and basketball skills, effectively guys who constantly get beat off the dribble, can’t beat anyone off the dribble, and who cannot make up for those deficiencies because they aren’t good spot up shooters either.

Myles and Jacob helped to mask some of those deficiencies with Jacob’s speed, quickness and ability to create, and Myles’ huge defensive presence in the paint and rebounding.

The ONLY way this team can be successful in its present form is by bringing defensive intensity every night, and establishing a third and fourth option on offense after Geo and Ron. That could be Jones and Hyatt we’ll see.. Bottom line is the defense needs to get way better and more consistent or we’re going nowhere this year.

Spot on comments.Pikiell isn't a embarrassment but rather a very good spokesman for Rutgers University. His comments about this being his best team were hyperbole but that is what some coaches do to keep up morale. The loss of 30 points on offense along with the stellar defense are the end result of Young,Johnson and Mathis leaving. The replacements aren't giving similar results.

If Pikiell is such an embarrassment....

Has not lost to Seton Hall since year 1

Seton Hall was so scared to play his team last year they ducked

Held Michigan St to 37 last year

Scored 91 against Illinois last year

Has a road win at a ranked Iowa team

Has landed an OOS 4* (from StL no less)

Has always represented RU with classm

First NCAA tournament win since 1983

If the bandwagon fans want to leave now would be a good time

Probably should be fired tomorrow. Maybe we can get back Jordan, Hill, Waters, Bannon, Rice or Littlepage. Good lord
I'm not asking for coach to be fired but I'd take Bannon or Water's game day coaching over Pike's ANYDAY.

Talk about being a sore looser. Stop with the baby negative talk about academics, campuses and try sticking to basketball talk . You sound like a HS drop out .

I have nothing against Seton Hall and I fully expect you to crush us on the court this season, but as a university it's not on par with Rutgers by every objective measure. I think it's a fair criticism of Pike that he can't outrecruit Catholic William Paterson.

We are a tier one school and 80% or more live on or off campus just the opposite when I attended in the 70s

Pike doesn't want to play the "game" (recruiting) how it's currently played by other schools.

It's hilarious to me that posters here call the Hall a low major when Rutgers has been literally a dumpster fire for decades. Some here have an over inflated image of their team and just are plain delusional. Let me get the salt shaker for you.

Pike did not pursue kids hard enough and now the teams success is screwed. Back to bottom feeder Rutgers. The future is bleak

Seton Hall outrecruits Rutgers consistently. Their coach is an ace recruiter who may cut corners.
Remember the Jerome Whitehead saga? Academics and facilities are secondary. Players are attracted to a consistently winning program. Marquette recruits better than Wisconsin some of the time. Xavier often does better than Ohio State. Villanova outrecruits Penn State. And to top it all off Pike does not really seem to enjoy recruiting. Basketball is everything to these small catholic colleges. It is the tail that wags the dog. Plus the Big East plays the style of basketball that appeals more to high school hot shots.

All those NCAA Tournaments they took us to were great
Number1 I said game day coaching. No. 2, neither was here that long. One could argue Bannon got screwed in his 2nd year (?) And that team should have been in. But I'll stick to number 1.

All I know is the team got out hustled and outworked yesterday. DePaul wanted it more and got in a position where they were able to hold on with a few long threes.

We're not calling them a low major basketball program. Clearly they're a major program. I'm calling them a second rate university....which they are.
