Just to recap:

6 months ago, Penny don’t matter. He’s not even a thorn in our side. UK eats first. BBN baby.

He only got Wiseman and Jeffery cuz they played on his team in AAU. He’ll be exposed.

Now, yeah he’s got talent but he can’t handle the pressure. He’s clearly paying for players.

This place is so predictable.

I still don't see how a new unproven coach in a mid major school like Memphis recruits like he is without some help. Cal recruited like that but it took him years to get to that level and he done it at another school first making the Final 4 before Memphis. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to hear of some shady stuff being done in a couple years with Penny and UM.
He ain't doing it without help. Goes from high school coach and AAU coach to head coach at Memphis. He is using his name and friends in the league and elsewhere to get this done.

They'll barely make the tournament, and if they do, look for a 1st/2nd round exit. They ain't doing **** next year.
They will make the tournament in my opinion as a 3 or 4 seed. AAC will be very weak this year. They shouldn’t lost more than 4 or 5 games heading into the tournament.

The only decent team they play is Tennessee. What a junk schedule. Penny will either look good for lack of competition or look terrible for losing to bad opponents.

He has
1
14
37
48
56
98
108 ranked players in class.

Ranked #1 purely because of number of commits. Several of those wont be big time impact players. Not sure what the hype is all about. Only 2 5 star players among them.

In comparison we have
10
12
23
32
104 (was 58 before injury)
with 3 5 stars.
You forget Memphis also got Tucker, who is a senior, has already averaged right at 20 points a game at the division ! level, and is a better athlete than any incoming freshman in Memphis or the Cats class.

No i didn’t forget. He’s a transfer not a recruit. And we also have Nate Sestina. But did you see me mention him? Tucker being better than their incoming freshman is funny to me. The lower ranked one sure possibly. Not the top ones. Ark Little Rock isn’t a the ACC, SEC or a power 5.

If we land McDaniels we jump back to 1.

In this situation 1 or 2 it doesn’t matter to me .

Part of why I had wanted Jaden so bad. Now if we do miss on him, I'll have to see smug Memphis fans beating their chest about how "Penny's better than Cal".

Hope they crash and burn. Who in the hell voluntarily moves to Memphis anyway? Did some work there a few weeks ago. It’s pretty run down.

Penny took two guys away from UK and most here continue to claim he’s a scrub, can’t coach, etc....

He’s become a force in recruiting and even a small amount of success next year will increase his recruiting ability.

People better take notice.

How are these kids choosing penny over us?? This is ridiculously frustrating. We have track record

Yep. And it's largely the same people who were bleating all year about how Virginia and Tony Bennett's system could never ever win a title.

The Tucker signing was huge. Really good primary scorer so they don't have to ask too much of Wiseman. They can also afford play PA as a face up PF.

He was Wiseman and Jeffries AAU coach. Wasn’t hard for him to lure those two guys to Memphis. That’s the only reason. I’ll take Brooks or Whitney over Jeffries. What evidence is there that says he’s a good coach?

Why would these young men sign up to play for a unproven head coach with so much at stake? Boggles my mind.

All I can say, Penny as a coach did not show me anything last season, now he has some talent can he actually coach. I have seen good recruiters who couldn't coach a lick.

And those kids have probably been actively recruiting the rest of the class. Penny won’t sustain this, especially if he doesn’t win big next year. Good for Memphis. Your one shining moment.

Memphis used to be a wonderful city with culture, life, and only a few rough parts. Now, thanks to drugs and gangs, it’s become a cesspool of violence and crime.

As far as Penny is concerned, he will be a force to be reckoned with if he gains traction in the post season.

Kids really don’t care where they go to school anymore if they get what they want in return. Penny has a lot of connections.

Shame really. I used to like Penny. He’s now becoming a pain.

The good thing is this will happen this year when we are loaded. After Penny flops with top talent the luster will be gone and it will be business back to usual.

Not too worried about this. In fact, I hope we play them. Next yr. Penny is going to see it’s tough to make everyone happy. He probably won’t lose a game in his **** conference which is fine, but wait till he plays the bigs boys. Guaranteed if we don’t play them in the regular season we will be playing them in the tournament sometime. If penny doesn’t take that team to a minimum of an elite 8 it will be a total failure. I also don’t see Hampton going there because he wants to be the man and that won’t happen given the grad transfer they just got. I hope he goes to Kansas

Your me welcome @Nooneputsbabyinacorner

Let's be real here.... If James Wiseman is born anywhere in the country besides Memphis, none of this is going down (And Wiseman is at UK). They've caught lightning in a bottle. Like many on this board, I'll be surprised if he and has staff can continue this level of recruiting, especially after this year will really tell us what Penny's coaching chops are made of.
James was born in Nashville & moved to Memphis to play for Penny. Penny is already heavily involved with some of the top ranked kids in 2020, so I wouldn’t count on this being a one year thing. Obviously, he’s going to need to prove that he can win big with this type of talent. Penny has a lot of momentum & Mike Miller is killing it with these kids. We will see, but I would not bet against him at this point.

Paying.....oops..... I mean recruiting top talent is one thing. Molding them into a team for an NCAAT run is something else. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Can't move the goalposts, just acknowledge they are doing a great job recruiting. I just wanted to see results before I gave credit to him and he's done a fantastic job on the recruiting trail this year. He/staff deserve all the praise. Can't worry about other programs getting praised/shine because it's part of the job. You earn your respect. Next step is toughest but always easier to contend when you have players.

Never understand when a UK or other Blueblood concerns themselves with other programs getting recognized. You have a brand that has sustained and succeeded over the history of CBB. It's not going to change unless UK/BBN allows/accepts it to. So focus on the great things you are doing. For instance, Memphis staff told several recruits this UK team wouldn't have 1 guy enter the Draft, they'd all be returning and they would be a borderline NCAA team due lacking talent. They won 30 games, made Elite 8. At Memphis they do that this year, it'll be a huge success story (and should be) but at UK it was a bit of a disappointment, even though this is thinnest team in terms of elite NBA prospects I've seen Cal have--but 3 are projected to be 1st Rounders. If that's the "down times"---you are living well.

He’s still affecting us.

Regardless of the reason, he IS taking players.

And the whole “he only got good players cuz he coached them in AAU” is officially out the window with a recruiting class like this.

There’s no evidence he’s a good coch. There’s also no evidence he’s a bad coach. Classic Message board spin to imply he can’t coach.
