You are correct recruiting like that you could make the tournament a lot of teams do but making the tournament here will get you fired you have to have a good chance to win it just read some of the posts in this thread , hell apparently we've never had a coach that could make a lot of these people happy.
So where are the 3 and 4 star recruits that are playing for Duke? What about all the 300 other colleges that have all those 3 and 4 star recruits. How many titles have they won? How many final fours have they made in the last 7 years. So let's go back to recruiting like Billy G and maybe we can make the NIT once in a while. I like the idea of knowing that every year we are in the discussion with a chance to make a final four. Name one coach that has a better record of making final fours in the last seven years. You can't because there is none. You are just jealous because your team does not have the record in the last seven years that UK has. Good luck trying to sell your lemonade.
The stigma on "being left behind" weighs heavily on some
"not ready yet" 1st/2nd year players.
Some like Teague and D.Johnson (IMO) could have helped
both UK and themselves with another year in college,

We have 3 seniors on this years team. Darius Miller was a senior. You act like we haven't had them.
Cal clearly tells them to stay if he thinks they aren't ready. It's their decision and a free country.
I'm just trying to figure out how one wouldn't know the names of our OAD guys, or remember their names after they leave?
I'd like to see Cal bring in a couple 3-4 year guys that are very good college players that the NBA is not crazy about..someone like an undersized 5 like Meeks at UNC or the Purdue kid..maybe an Allen at Duke ..someone that has a flaw ..I'm just not sure we can win a title with 5 freshman each year..Next year will be younger than this one.
They can of course. It just doesn't fit their agenda to say so.
Hindsight is 20/20 but I would have rather had Swanigan than Skal as it turns out. Not every player is going to turnout like we think though.

To me it's a two edge sword. One edge; How can you pass on the top talent and let your rivals divy them up? Answer: you can't. Any coach in his right mind will and should take the best talent that he can get.
The other edge; How difficult will it be to take the top but less experience players and get them to gel as a team? Answer: Somewhat to very difficult, but Cal is the best at it, although it doesn't happen every year. Its really a roll of the dice, but I really like our odds.
Before Cal got here with his "system", we were trending down to being a mediocre program. When he left Memphis, he told his team that U.K. was his dream job? Why? It was and is the pinnacle of CBB. Since his arrival, we are the most talked team in CBB. We are an elite program, with the most wins in CBB, and 2nd in titles.
Even when other top teams are playing, Big Blue comes up in the conversation. Big Blue nation could be a country of its own. I know we all want more than talk about the team. We want banners, and so does every other team in CBB. We will get ours!
Everybody can talk about that we should have more titles with the talent that we get, but there are so many variables that come into play, biggest of all is that you are dealing with 18-20 year old kids, who are still trying to figure themselves out. Root em on and cheer em up.

Cal knows almost all the guys he brings in are OAD....I'd like a few mixed in that have an NBA flaw, maybe undersized,,too heavy,,something that the NBA doesn't like, but are good 3-4 year starters.I thought we had our 4 year PG in 5'7 Ulis
How many high 3-4 stars are willing to come off the bench their first 2-3 years and maybe get a chance to start as a senior when they can go somewhere else and not worry about a new #1 class coming in every year. Not very many. Plus whenever a player stays more than one year here there are morons who say they suck, case in point Briscoe this year people want him benched.
The twins get blamed for not winning in 15 which is bs, sometimes the best team doesn't win. Alex P was called inconsistent, a waste and a no heart player. Saw Willie called disappeario. Lee was constantly ridiculed until he left then people talked about how he was the missing piece. So with a fan base like ours, spoiled, even if you had other than O&Ds there would be those who not be happy.

Can't agree with you on this. 8 million plus dollars A YEAR to coach any sport is just wrong. I know he can get it and don't blame him for getting as much as he can but no human on this planet is truly worth 8 mil a year. Rip me if you like but I stand by my comment.

well you might have got me. No business maybe wasn't the best phrase. Our guys who have left to play D league or overseas are still making more than an average American could hope for. For now.
A good question though is did they maximize their value ? Maybe some have but others maybe not. I guess what I meant is that there have been guys who have left when coming back probably would have increased their earning potential. Teague, Lamb, Goodwin, Johnson, to name a few.
Either way my original point is that the OP is way off. The recruiting is fine, absolutely astounding really.
The problem IMO is the culture being created. Similarly talented players at other schools are not leaving as early. I don't want unreasonable expectations for UK but at the same time I'd love to be the gold standard and it's pretty much proven itself that it's not going to happen with a team full of freshmen.
Just my useless opinion but the game needs everyone to play until their jr year. Otherwise let them go straight out of highschool to the pros like they used to.
Not really, I am not basing this on talent but play. Right now this team has no identity nor guts on defense. I think in a one game winner take all right now this team would lose to said squad.
We've had more elite players with Cal than anyone has ever had. (my opinion).
In 1945-1950 we had more skilled and All Americans then or will ever again have. UK had 2 or 3 previous All Americas on the bench. One of them had made all America twice. His name was Jim Jordan. I think 1-2 had made it at UK before entering the War.

All you need to know about college basketball today and what OAD has done is that they are selling the coaches on the marquee.
Come one come all, see John Calipari potty train some kids nobody knows yet but maybe 6 years down the road they'll be a max contract face of some crappy franchise that won't make the playoffs and who nobody stays up late enough to watch...

Some people just cannot resist being stupid. What more proof do you need than the most wins, most tournament wins, highest winning percentage, most final fours, and one title? Titles are rare, people. In fact, you should be looking less at the one title and more at how absurd it is that he's racked up so many Final Fours. Took two teams there that honestly had no business making it that far.
We have had a legit shot every year but one (two maybe) out of 8. You can't ask for anything better than that, and anything better than that is a lucky fall of the dice.
If you don't like the roster churn, then okay. That's legit. But you'd have to take that 6/8 legit shots and make it about 2/10, because that's generally the rate at which elite teams have a shot. That's a 75% rate of elite teams versus a 20% rate. Do you want to do that? WHY? So you don't have to remember new uniform numbers?
Don't come in acting like this way doesn't work at all, or that he can't coach... who even cares? RESULTS. HE HAS THEM.

I'm not talking about basketball skills but more quality of the person that wears our blue and white. Every player he's had here has proven to be a quality person that has played for the team and represented UK at the highest level.
If Cal is not recruiting a top 20 player, something is wrong with that player. That is why Kentucky does not have the behavioral issues that you see at Kansas, Louisville, Duke, or North Carolina.
Our coach does things the right way and the best players (both athletically and otherwise) want to be in Lexington.
