At this point, I never think any player is coming back. If I am wrong, I get to be pleasantly surprised. The fact remains, kids come here to go to the NBA and even if they love their time at UK and don't want to leave, at the end, they will always choose the NBA. It is what it is.

So where is Cal in all this? Says it’s players first for years, then out of nowhere changes tune and tries to get Knox to stay. No big deal but doesn’t look too great on Cal to me.

I'm not sure how that looks bad on Cal. It may have been in Knox's best interest to return to Kentucky next season. If Cal believed that wasn't the case, he would not have advised him to return. You have never heard a story where Cal advised someone like John Wall to return, because he knew it was in their best interest to jump to the NBA.

Most UK fans assume Cal pushes everyone out the door, which is not the case. He gives them his input, and lets them make their own decision. Knox chose to do his own thing, which as we have seen in the past, sometimes works for guys and sometimes doesn't.

I take it as he meant that Kevin’s return would have been an unusual plus for a program in need of a massive surge of momentum.

We can look at the last 9 years as a massive net gain of historical imperatives, and it is. That said, the last three years have ended in disappointment (this year against Kansas State), outrage (brutality of the officiating in the UNC game), and ambivalence (the Murray season). The program has lost its identity as the OAD destination, and UK is at a literal crossroads in terms of where to go next. Does Cal blend more long term guys, or does he continue to sell OAD to the second tier?

UK needs some momentum. Knox would have provided that in spades. Instead, UK now sits with more unknowns, just like it has done for the majority of the last four offseason cycles. It’s no time to panic, but with this announcement, it just creates a feeling of more of the same emotional ambivalence.
You are a great poster Saul but I have to disagree. I am very excited about next year and a couple of top players Cal could add to the roster. Add in that the team will have a huge advantage of jelling as a team in the summer games against foreign pros, it should be awesome year to be a Cat fan.

Contact the suicide prevention hotline, UK fans are about to hit them hard. Good grief, go after the kid because he has the opportunity to make millions. He could easily get injured next year, so jumping when it's clear you are going to be drafted only makes common sense. Some of you lack that.

Never was going to stay from the day he stepped on campus. The way the system works, there was never any need for him to.
The last few days have been posturing to keep the sheep believing it will be different after next season. Believe at your own peril.

I thought Cal always said if you are for sure first round you go. I could be wrong.

I don't think most of our fans understand what. "Players First" means.

If Cal thinks the best thing for Knox is to come back and mature for a year and go top 5-7 in the draft, it's Players First for him to tell him so. Doesn't mean Knox has to listen. So then we support him in what he chooses to do. Players first.

Amen!!!!!!

Kevin is having fun right now and I don't blame him. The only person here who won' come down off of their moral mountain is you, as always.

As far as Kentucky goes, which is why I'm here, he was overrated and is not longer on the roster. It simply didn't do much for UK, so yes, I would like better roster building because I'm ready for Cal to have his run. Guys like Knox just don't help in the long run.

If you have problems with this then there's around 30 NBA teams for you to pick from. I'm not making it personal, I'm talking about the effects on UK.

He's a born millionaire that now has more millions. He doesn't need you coddling him.

It’s a no win situation for the players with fans. If they are private the fans want to know what they or th family is thinking. If they are public and honest the fans like it unless the outcome isn’t what the fans want

I really wish his dad wouldn't have built up hope that he would return. From the reports of Knox Sr. saying "Cal is trying to talk him into coming back" and he himself saying "I'm in favor of Knox returning", it built up a lot of hype that he would ultimately return. I wish they would have been more private with this instead of getting people excited for no reason.

Regardless, I loved having Knox at UK this year and wish him well in the NBA.

I agree with a poster who reminded me that we are just as guilty as anyone for creating drama. I said players shouldn't be drama kings and he rebutted it by saying we adults create drama ourselves and I have to agree. Glad he called me out. He was right.

Cal looks like a bit of a hypocrite to me in all this. Go ahead, tell me I am the devil for daring to question anything regarding Cal. I could care less.

The devil? Don’t be so emotional man.

I’m just not sure how he looks like a “hypocrite?”
It’s been said he tried to get him to maybe consider staying? That’s awesome... but Knox seems to want to take Multiple millions of $$ instead.
What is Cal supposed to do? Not try and get anyone to stay in case they end up deciding to leave anyways?

You’re not making any sense .

How much less could* you care? ;)

I refused to get fooled. I always think they’re gonna leave. I remember after 2011 thinking Brandon Knight might return.

I think I might’ve joined a “Please Return Brandon Knight” Facebook group. Lmao.

I’m not that naive anymore. Plus I want the kids to do whatever they think is best for them. Let those birds fly.

I hope so.

I’ll feel the same way as you if UK returns the guys it’s supposed to: Vanderbilt, Washington, Green, Gabriel, Richards.

No more critical transfers ala Matthews/Lee or bizarre defections to the g-league or a similar global leagues (Briscoe, Humphries). Maybe even a break on a fringe guy like Diallo to return.

I’ll be honest, I actually think we’ll see multiple transfers and a guy leaving (I don’t understand the all-in on Hagans/Montgomery if the staff felt good about everyone coming back outside SGA, Diallo, Knox) who we didn’t expect to leave. Knox returning would have covered a multitude of such events.

I’m just feeling ambivalent as a fan right now. I’d be shocked if all those guys I mentioned came back (excluding Diallo). The culture right now is all about fastest way to the league, and these guys historically mostly think they’re failures if they have to return.

That type of culture needs to change. Player retention shouldn’t seem like a mortal sin. This is the only place in America where it seems that way.

No, it built unnecessary hype up that he would return when many had him penciled in as a one and done since he signed with us. I'm not saying his dad was lying or had bad intentions, but it wasn't the best decision. If Knox announced today he was leaving without any prior commitments from his dad being made, you wouldn't see as much negativity about him leaving.

Or was it the media building up the situation for traffic and ad purposes? Probably that, but everyone tends to ignore how the media works.

Once again, anyone who didn’t think Knox and Shai were gone were livIng in a fantasy world. Diallo checking out doesn’t hurt the team in my opinion. If everyone else returns, this team is going to be outstanding.

That's a great point actually. His dad was probably just stating facts (even tho I still believe he probably should have kept things more quiet), but the media loves to turn that stuff into clickbait to drive traffic to their website. It's a shame what "journalism" has turned into these days.

Meanwhile, 7 of the 9 teams that have won a title in the OAD Cal Era at UK have done so with overwhelmingly veteran teams. The two OAD teams (Duke, Kentucky) had multiple upperclassmen who acted as key contributors.

Point being: we are witnessing a system at Kentucky that doesn’t work as it presently stands, so “expecting them all to leave” every year basically is admitting defeat. Player retention is an absolute must going forward. I hope the staff is no longer afraid to embrace selling more than merely the fastest route toward the NBA.

Media drives this anticipation bus. It's hard not to get on it for the ride. It's comparable to weather people when a storm is bowling through. If they leave you hanging enough, then you'll come back to them for updates. It's how they drive up their ad prices.

You’re genuinely making no sense at all.

I’m not sure what you’re upset about but maybe take a break ... just for a bit?

Cal is a hypocrite because he mentioned the possibility of positives to Knox returning?
