All about him? Ron’s quote wasn’t just “we all need to play better” it was “everyone needs to know their roles and not try to score 20 points” which was basically calling out Young and Ron wanting to stay a primary scorer.
Sure...whatever you say

No narrative here, this what Ron said, and then what actaully happened In terms of shot distribution
@dpwhite
Not worried at all. A healthy Ron helped get us off to a 7-1 start last year. A healthy Ron with a clear understanding of what he needs to do to improve is a good thing. Looking forward to a new year with this team.JY didn’t need to be called out clearly.
Real reason to worried about Ron offensively this year with his draft prospects looking over the season and his desire to get more shots.
Very true. They are all great dudes led by a great head dude. We are lucky. This year was a sh$t show for all of us and definitely for the team. They should be celebrated for breaking through under crappy circumstances. Let’s not let a small handful of posters stir the pot to diminish that accomplishment.By the way, Jacob Young, from what I know of him—-and the rest of the players on the team—are really good people. There’s just something about the way they meshed this year…
What are you actually getting at? Really trying here btw, not being disingenuous during this discussion.Did you watch Ron’s interview? I posted it on this site. You should watch it.

Did you just not realize the implication of what Ron actually said and thought he was being a better teammate than JY (who made his comments no longer as a teammate)? Without realizing that, I guess I can see why you thought Ron had more tact if that’s your position.
Why are we assuming this is a Ron vs JY thing? Based on the interview, it seems like JY and Ron had SOME relationship. The only names not uttered were Geo and Pike.
Agree, in most situations yes. But Houston was exceptional in a lot of ways. Not least Bc JYs father was a stud there and it meant a great deal to him.I don’t think it’s a Ron vs JY thing.
I think it’s the way both look at the season and the way they view what happened vs what should have happened.
I also think Geo is the most clutch player at RU since Geoff Billet and should have the ball in his hands at the end of the game.
Well saidJacob Young is not good enough to warrant a coach changing up their entire philosophy for him.
So the narrative that Pike didn't use his skills the right way lacks any context. Its silly...and incorrect.
I will miss Young. He was electric. He left it all out on the floor. He helped us win some big games. That said, he's not even close to the level of player that is above the team concept.
I wish him well and we move on with the guys who want to be here.
For me, its that simple.
I have to tell you ...The quote from Ron was dead on....I never saw any evidence that he or Geo ever “hunted shots “ to make sure they got their share. There was plenty of times thar JY, and to a lesser extent , MM, hunted lower percentage shots when it was their time to sit, to the point where I thought pike needed to send the message ...and that’s what happened in late January when MM and JY got knocked out of the staring line up
heck ...if anything there was some stretches where I thought RHJ deferred way too much
The reality was once we got into conference play...defense intensity went up, shot attempts went down because the pace wasn’t always up and down ...and we were not going to average 80 a game.
there just wasn’t enough points to share for geo, Ron, Jacob , Montez to each score 12-14 plus per game like what was happening in December ....because we also still had Paul, Caleb, cliff and Myles getting thei 25-27 as well between the four of them .
People forget the four game win streak after the losing streak came in part because we slowed down the game and made defense and rebounding again the priority....
And I just don’t think JY ans MM were on
Board with slow it down some ...and that’s why they aren’t here any longer ....

Could just be a coincidence. Agree with Paul though, culture is very important.
Being a Rutgers basketball fan but not a Geo Baker fan is such a weird thing. The guy has been the face of the program while it's gone from 3-15 in the conference to two tournament bids. Rutgers needed someone with his attitude.Geo has created a perpetual strawman of the world being against him. It’s tiring. Im looking forward to the end of this upcoming season

Some people just prefer being miserable all the damn time, I guess.
I love Rutgers Basketball. That doesn’t mean I am a big fan of everyone who wears the uniform.Being a Rutgers basketball fan but not a Geo Baker fan is such a weird thing. i think your "beef" is with the wrong personI love Rutgers Basketball. That doesn’t mean I am a big fan of everyone who wears the uniform.
I have a tough time excusing him for his effort last year. I have a tough time forgetting the sulking last year. I find it difficult not to partially blame him for the players that have left. I have to say his quotes that were posted yesterday don’t sit well.

I dunno man, he had COVID in September and hurt both of his ankles by mid-November. He was playing a season in front of no fans and cut off from his non-basketball friends and family. Even if he was only giving 75% on a body that was 75%, I can understand it. I never once noticed myself or heard from anyone else that Geo was sandbagging it in any of his first three seasons here. I don't think he suddenly got senioritis and took plays off for no season.I love Rutgers Basketball. That doesn’t mean I am a big fan of everyone who wears the uniform.

go listen to Pike's OTB interview. he practically spells it out for you.
I think it's a clue that these are college students. What is he going to say?
I am sure Jacob is more to blame than some of the current players. Sounds like Jacob is very immature and selfish.
Geo not taking the high road and posting snarky social media posts is a clue that this isn’t a 1 way street.
Fair assessment. But it also sounded like he was joking with Ron. Geo we know missed multiple games with that high ankle sprain but he wasn't explicitly mentionedHe mentioned Ron in the context of "weak" ankles and how all players are dealing with ankle issues and how he (JY) rubs dirt on it and plays through it. Not sure how that shows any type of relationship. Came across to me as almost a passive aggressive way to say that he views himself as a "gamer" while feeling Ron was not.
Lots of "I" and "Me" from JY in the interview. Loved him as a player for us and do not doubt his positive impact here - but in interviews, always prefer more self-effacing guys.
Yeah very fickle personalities at that age. Easy to see something as a personal affront.I think it's a clue that these are college students.
I am sure that was part of it. I think Jacob taking control of the team was a big factor too.I dunno man, he had COVID in September and hurt both of his ankles by mid-November. I need to be reminded of that. It is a great point.I think it's a clue that these are college students.

I root for him on the court but off it he's been a baby. If youre being objective he was our 4th best player last year. He discussed with our guys to delay the start of our first ncaa tourney game in 3 decades. Hes very divisive and uneducated on topics he talks about alot. He says hes oppressed when he’s extremely privileged. He ran a couple guys out of town.Being a Rutgers basketball fan but not a Geo Baker fan is such a weird thing. Haha i have never said either but nice try cupcake. I simply said I thought kids are better off going the michael nzei route of starting a career at 22 than playing euro ball that hes no forward long term career path leaving you with no working experience at 30 where you can possibly be making $200K/yr by the time your 30 which I can almost guarantee michael nzei will be making in excess of $200K by 30. He was a local example of a kid who went to wall street > insert random euro league he couldve gone to.You realize who the comments coming from right?
The dude plays against better competition in his Hoboken pick up games then the guys in the big ten.
And let's not forget if you don't make 200k a year before you're 30, you're a failure.
Idk how anyone can argue that us going into a shell/essentially the equivalent of a prevent defense in the last 5 mins of the houston game was a good move. We're going to have to disagree on that one. If I'm the coach, I'm looking to tie/win the game, not create a cool storyline. JY didn't have the best game against Houston, either. Geo had done it his entire career...
Alot of competitors in bball have had that mentality. Even Michael Jordan, to an extent, would bully people into capitulating to his will and dominance. He was such an alpha he would look to embarrass you into raising your level of play. He'd challenge folks direct, and the implicit undertone was, "I'm bringing it, you better bring it too or I will be ON YOU!"Exempting Young from the "sorority girls" jab is funny. If Baker/Harper are, he certainly is too. Only one of the three bailed, though.
Wish him the best, but I've never been a fan of the "I got mine" mentality. This is basketball, not figure skating... it's a team sport, and looking out for number one doesn't help anyone.
“I got mine” mentality usually isnt playing balls to the wall defense every second theyre on the floor and shutting down all-americans. But hey, we’ll agree to disagree here. JY was alllllll about ball, didnt concern himself about things out of his control, didnt wanna get into the distraction bs, rarely used social media. One of the big issues is all he cared about was ball while some other guys were more concerned with believing they could change the worldExempting Young from the "sorority girls" jab is funny. If Baker/Harper are, he certainly is too. Only one of the three bailed, though.

The intent of my post was to exonerate your head coach from any alleged mistreatment of Young by implying that JY had a financial inducement to play for Oregon with its propensity to throw Nike money at recruits and transfers. Ha haOr its as simple as his brother went to oregon haha
Us too, because it will be the end to your perpetual string of tiring, absurd, made up criticisms of Geo. He stood up for NIL which virtually all student athletes are 100% behind. Oh, and social justice like millions of others around the world of all races did, but of course you've said racism in this country doesn't exist so we know that not only are you by far the most consistently tiring person on this board, you're equally ignorant.Geo has created a perpetual strawman of the world being against him. It’s tiring. Im looking forward to the end of this upcoming season
