Still don't get why he didn't turn pro. And if he didn't why he's playing at another school. Sorry, can't rationalize it for me. Just doesn't make sense.
That question will get answered for you on Sunday

In 2019-20 Jacob Young was a bad offensive player and in three seasons he was a 26% three point shooter. He played well in 2020-21 but I'm not really surprised the coaches didn't rush to build the offense around him, especially when it would have required switching things up mid-season. Despite that, he still led the team in usage and essentially tied for the team lead in minutes.

Whatever the team's issues were last season, "more Jacob Young" was probably not the answer. I think he was used relatively correctly. I'm not entirely sure what he thinks is going to happen at Oregon where they already have a point guard in Will Richardson and also brought in another 6-2 guard in De'Vion Harmon.

The team that Jacob Young transferred to was the Corey/DeShawn/Mike team that went 3-15 in the Big Ten. I don't know the conversations that took place between Pikiell and Young but the kind of player we needed (and we were willig to take) back then is much different than now. Maybe Young saw Corey put on a show at MSG and came here to get shots up on a bad team, I don't know. But there's a reason Pikiell took guys like Young (wanted the ball, not especially efficient) and a project like Peter Kiss back then that he wouldn't take now. I think it's pretty clear that what Young wants and what Pikiell wants are two different things at this juncture, so another season here may not have been very productive for either one.

I appreciate JY's time here. A lot of good moments that I'll never forget. But from a dispassionate lookahead perspective, I don't think we'll end up missing him very much in 2021-22. Once next year's team loses a game or two people will miss the idea of him at his best and make him out to be Zavier Simpson or Anthony Cowan or something, but they'll forget the 4+ turnover games and the 4-12 shooting days. The offense was 10th in the conference in 2020 when he was not very good. It was 9th in 2021 when he played much better. Whatever it's going to be in 2022, it's going to be and his presence would not meaningfully change it.

Ding ding ding! Def a winner here
Hope there was the appropriate follow up question as to how a 5th year as a 24 year old at Oregon would benefit his future professional basketball aspirations starting at 25 given that professional athletics has a limited shelf life and most of his competitors vying to play for pay will have a 4-5 year head start in terms of age.

No one cares too much about departing or transferring players as some fans somehow stuck in the past are. You thank them for their efforts and work.....I give Eugene credit for 1 thing....he had maybe 1 or 2 quotes and you never heard from him again mentioning RU.....he moved onto Oregon, took his year off to get his knee healthy, and finished up strong with his 1 season at Oregon.

I can only say, depending on what Jacob says or doesn't say, he has a chance to remove all doubt about his character or lack thereof. I hope he doesn't completely make a fool out of himself but I'm not interested in what he has to say here....way more interested in the recruiting going on now, for 2022, 23 and beyond.

He’s very professional and measured, in my opinion. He doesn’t take aim directly at anybody, I’ll tell ya that

Call me crazy, but based on the above stats it appears there is only one HC who seems to have "used him properly". Pike got the best out of Young. I thought Eugene would perform well at Oregon when he left Rutgers. I do not feel the same about Young. Time will tell.

Well you said the same thing about Eugene O and whiffed on that one big time.

either way for the 2nd time in 3 years we lost our best player who lost faith in pike.
I did? You've got a lot better memory of what I said three years ago than I do then because I never remember saying a word about how Pike used Eugene when he was here. I also don't remember anyone questioning how Pike played Eugene other than that some that felt he gave him too much freedom to dominate the ball (which I didn't agree with btw). This much I do know. Eugene was a physical wreck and damaged goods when he left here and benefitted greatly from sitting out that transfer year.

His teammates certainly didn't have anything good to say about him when he left

Frankly, I'm honored that anyone would give a crap about what I say that much to remember something they think I said 3 minutes ago, nevermind 3 years ago.

Either way, for the 2nd time in 2 years Pike delivered an NCAA caliber team for Rutgers which had been done a grand total of once since the NCAA tournament began in 1939.

JY played a lot of minutes, scored a lot of points, got a lot of steals (and turnovers) and had the ball in his hands a lot for a team that was NCAA caliber for both of his years on the court. If JY was indeed "unhappy with on court role" which I have not heard him say himself yet, well, some people are just never happy. If NJ wasn't for him and 1 year in lockdown far from home was enough, that would certainly be understandable. I'm going to have a lot of fond memories of what JY contributed to here whatever his reason for leaving was.

Young improved as a player at Rutgers , now it's up to another program to make him pro material because it's obvious ,to me, Jacob didn't like his NBA draft chances and felt Rutgers might not give him the minutes he needs to improve his draft status with the way RU's 2021-22 roster will be and the type of game RU will be playing that will be an adjustment from the 2020-21season that make his game look a lot better than his previous 3 years.

He decided to go to a program he felt would fit his talents better and Rutgers will miss him, but not be hurt ( in my opinion) because his replacement will fit the teams game plan a little better.

Not super at all. I liked EO a lot but the team made it to the tournament without him twice. Some players just want to score and Pike doesn’t coach that way. It’s okay if they want to play on a high scoring program because that suits their abilities. Scoring a lot of points and not playing great Defense is not the only way to play sports though some people can only see it that way.

considering the nature of college basketball today (how many kids went through the portal this year alone?) I think Pike has done a great job of keeping this roster intact overall (including adding kids in key positions-of-need).

your statement is so - not sure what the right word is - slilted? slanted? biased? short-sighted?

I'm not going to say that your comment is false (e.g., one COULD argue that EO and JY were the "best" players at the time) but that "fact" (2nd time in 3 years we lost our best player) is only one small part of a much larger picture of the overall program/ direction of the program/ degree of success/ roster construction/etc. So much so that it makes your comment largely irrelevant. instead, you just come as someone looking for that ONE particular angle to criticize Pike in order to further an agenda. seems pretty clear thats what youre doing particularly with the "lost faith in Pike" thing - where was that stated?

.....and yet we had much better results and made it to the tourney after EO left. Maybe "me" guys are not the answer.
From what I saw I can understand why Jacob would leave and feel like he was mistreated. Most players and people are “me” guys. Most people don’t stay at their jobs forever.

do you think our “loyal” players would stay if they were benched while others played with a fraction of the effort and missed shots and made mistakes too.

I like Pike a lot. Fantastic guy for this organization. He says he plays the best and is fair to the rest. It’s a great saying but it isn’t 100% true.

He was a top defender for us. Why lie to set your narrative.
And Jacob young was head and shoulders our best defender last year outside myles (who also left)

clearly you dont like Pike for whatever reason and are just approaching this from a particular angle to further your specific agenda.

got it.
It’s constant from some. All I know is we were perennial losers and now we danced twice in a row. There’s more to a team and a program than individual players. And I like all of those who left. All were important to us.

Seems to me if players leaving a program means the coach is bad, which is the narrative of a few people here, then every coach in the country in men’s basketball and in football must be terrible. I don’t believe the portal reflects on the coach as much as it does on the simple fact that kids can leave for whatever reason they want. It is now part of the game. Also, if kids leaving reflects badly on the coach then kids transferring in should reflect well on that same coach. Don’t overthink it. It is like free agency in the pros; they go wherever they think it is best for themselves for whatever reason.

Am I the only one who thinks , game in and game out, Geo is just as valuable to the team as Jacob?
No I think many of us would agree that Geo and RHJ are two of the best players in our program. I like all players and never put one of the other because you can’t win with one player. Period.

We all know that we had two Jacobs……..one who played within himself and one who let his emotions get the better of him to the detriment of the team. He was exciting to watch at times, and at others I just wanted to pull my remaining hair out. I think the biggest knock on him is that although he was a team player at times, he was not consistently so.

In the current system, Pike needs to learn how to re-recruit his best players to get them to stay with his program.
What if the player that fans believe is an impact player, isn't a positive influence with your younger players or staff??

What if the player already decided half through the season being played, that they're contacting other schools, letting them know they're going to transfer??

Do you honestly think that every player decides abruptly and only at the very end of the season, that they're going to transfer??

The concept or re-recruiting your own players is 100% coachspeak, to cover your bases with the fans and media. Coaches rarely if ever publicly trash a player that transfers, they give the canned answer etc.

Young was never, ever at any point in time, going to be the 1st or 2nd option on any Power 5 program anywhere. He is a player best suited on a title contending program, as your 1st guard off the bench, to bring energy and outplay the bench of your opponents. And that doesn't mean Young wasn't valuable, but if he is creating negative energy and chaos, mixed with selfish me 1st offense, then he's better off with a fresh start.....that's what happened at Texas, that's what happened at RU. Shaka Smart and Pike are extremely, coach friendly, player-friendly coaches. If you're struggling with those 2 coaches, it's 99.9% the player, not the coaching staff.

Jacob was one of my favorite players to watch at RU over the last 45 years ( I’ve been watching since 1974/75)
I have no issues with his game but we will be better as a team next year even though we lose Jacob and Miles
We lost our best player in EO and got better
The same thing will happen again
Geo is better with the ball then without
The chemistry and fit will make up for the loss of individual talent
