Pretty sure the 6 figures I lost both times in divorces put towards gambling would have been a better ROI. Not to mention it would have definitely lasted longer than the marriages did.

Speaking of UK Carls, apparently “FIRST DOWN KENTUCKY!” guy, Carl Nathe, retired. https://uknow.uky.edu/campus-news/behind-blue-ukpr-s-carl-nathe-reflects-iconic-career (edit: Not sure if he quit the PA job, but he retired from UK as a publicist)

Whoever replaces him, it’s going to sound weird in a few weeks.
My “UK Carl” is my paternal grandfather, Carl “Hoot” Combs. Lettered in football at UK (when that meant something), played for Rupp on the hardcourt, went to WW II and got a Purple Heart for getting shot in Italy, stayed in Italy and ran a gambling ring after the war for a bit, came back to law school at UK and was a graduate assistant coach for a guy named Paul Bryant, started a successful law practice, was the first sportscaster for what was then channel 36, called basketball games at Memorial (I want to say football games at Stoll also) and the Keeneland feature race for a while.

In short, he was a lot cooler and more accomplished than I’ve ever even thought of being.

Edit: To add I’m very sorry to hear of Nathe’s retirement. Genuinely can’t really imagine UK football with him. What an icon.

*Buy a scratcher about once a year.

*Buy a $2 Power Ball ticket randomly when it gets up pretty high. No illusions about winning, but it gives me a chance to daydream from the gas station to my house about what I'd do with it if I did.

*66 on Saturday at the Gold Rush in Owensboro. Tied for the lead, my lowest tournament round ever. Sunday------>84 🤣. If I was capable of being embarrassed on a golf course, that would've been the time. Just pathetic.

*

*Wayne simply cannot be serious with several of his takes today. Can't be. Has to be trolling.

Horse racing is the gateway gambol. Everyone remembers being at some derby party as a child and mom/dad throwing in a few bucks to a pot for a number for their kids.

usually that’s the $1-2 pot, meanwhile the kids see the schmuck who wins the $10 pot and wish they had that chance.

ova!

Never bought a scratch off nor a lottery ticket, but I lost $200 last night when the Saints gave up 18 fourth quarter points in a preseason game.

My uncle Karl is Rufus' youngest son; my dad is the middle kid. The orneriness is absolutely genetic, as is the sense of humor and love of Kentucky football. They also all have a family facial expression which apparently communicates that we think you are both dumber than hell and we hope you eat a bowl full of **** as punishment. I inherited that too and wear it with pride.

  • Big day for my kid today. License came in mail and his varsity jacket in from manufacturer. Pretty much hitting the exacta box for his senior year romp. UK Med School application has an essay question (of course) about diversity
  • I think we got this residential development I wrote up proposal for.... 400,000sf project of two towers. Fun.
  • Parents: Marge and George,
  • Grands: Michael/Emily & Vito/Ann
  • Wife hired as full-time teacher again. Good times.
  • Charleston in 3 weeks
  • Bourbon is awesome. Collecting like a tater is stupid if you don’t drink your collection.

- Have not watched an inning of baseball since the Nats big sell-off. Got a hankering for some playoff caliber baseball so went looking for this Reds v. Brewcrew tilt only to be reminded that FSOH isn't a part of YouTube TV

- Hotels across Lexington already sold out for the LSU weekend. Keeneland running. Potential showdown with at worse 1 loss and a prime target for GameDay, city should be spinning off its axis come the 9th.

- RIP Charlie Watts. Also, too early to ask the Stones to find a real drummer to finish up their upcoming tour?

I mean, he's fine for their style and they are one of my favorite bands, but like Ringo Starr, never one you'd set out to emulate behind a kit.

- Never cared for pull-tabs but I would give a small fortune to be posted up with a draft domesto at a Catholic picnic 'Beat the Dealer' tent about now. Worship.

- I also have uncles and aunts. Some have unique names but most are typical Boomer nomenclatures.

- Marrow is about as real as they come. Can see how he's cleaned up on the recruiting trail. If an assistant ever warranted a lifetime contract, he qualifies.

Come on, Bonz. Surely you can find some rich old broad to put you up in her stable for the night.

Hotel room? Lol.

Really sucks when rock bands have to cancel because their members die of natural causes, have a stroke, are scheduled for heart surgery, fall and break a hip, have inflamed dentures, hemorrhoidial edema, triple cataract bypass, pulmonary gout infection, etc, etc.

I remember when they had the tryouts to replace Doug Bruce for the football PA job. It was Nathe and one other guy. Nathe was perfectly fine for one half, but the other guy was either completely nervous or completely lost. Either way, he was F'n awful, so Nathe was the guy. But Doug Bruce was awesome, and his "First Down, Kentucky!" was the best.

Lorenzen was **** tonight. Reds bullpen doing Reds bullpen things.

* With the FBI running cadaver dogs through Houck rental properties in Bardstown, it seems there is more than one famous Kentucky Brooks with a hole in his yard.

* Kinnard randomly wearing heavy gold chains over his jersey for media day is a boss move. Love that guy -- and not just for what he does at the one minute mark in this clip.

* Speaking of that clip, Vito Tisdale is the peacemaker at the beginning. I'm sure he immediately left the field and pistol whipped a bunch of white women though.

* The air is a little brisk this morning and in ten days, I'll be making coffee and putting beer on ice before heading to Commonwealth.

* The most encouraging sign about football this year may be that no one seems to even have any thoughts about basketball. I like that Calipari reacted to last year's dumpster fire by immediately addressing the glaring problems with huge changes in multiple areas and then laying low. This is the quietest he's been since he got here.

He's the best and even though there is occasional tension, Calipari and Kentucky basketball are made for each other.
