Why wouldn't you? Hagans and Quickley should have done the same.

Why? They’re not going. They’re not ready. Cal knows what they need to work on as well as anyone.

Man, we gotta stop adding to the nonsense. There’s no reason. Just focus on what cal tells you and work on your craft and you’ll be there.

I just don’t understand this mindset man. Hagans and Quickly don’t need feedback they need a better game. Just do the work and let it come.

While you’re going through the tryout process, you get a chance to travel to NBA cities and workout for teams at their expense. That’s enough reason for a lot of players to consider it.

The other part, one that you never hear mentioned, is that your coaches are allowed to coach you 4 hours a day, up to 20 hours per week until you pull out of the draft. So the coaches might see some value for this reason. I don’t know what they think, because I’ve never heard anyone talk about it.

What will all these company men that say “he’s not going anywhere but he’d be stupid not to do this” going to say if he actually keeps his name in the draft?
Be interesting to see. But we already know what they will say.

Has EJ appeared on ANY NBA Draft projection as going even in the 2nd round?

I haven't seen ANY!!!

I realize that these kids can go through the draft process ONCE, but why do it when your name has NEVER even been mentioned in either round?

Huh....well. That is interesting. Didn’t realize that last part. The first part eh, spend time with your teammates and get better. You’ll be traveling plenty.

Honest question. Jordan comes out as a freshman, goes to buy or rent a sports car, house shopping, gonna be drafted by some crap organization.....is he Jordan today? I see no way.

My point is just focus on the goal. You don’t need feedback to know what you already know. These guys are not going to help us with this foot in foot out mindset or themselves in lots of cases.

Cal is the best person on the planet to know what they need to work on.

And get an agent?

Didn't realize they changed that rule. Used to be you could do it once only.

Even so, what teams would want to "evaluate" a kid that isn't even considered a 2nd round pick?

I think it all boils down to (and I remember you mentioning this more than once over the last several months) the complete professionalization of college basketball.

It won’t get any better, and honestly I see it getting worse with the absurd “mUh eXpLoItaTioN” mantra becoming popular.

I mean, I get it to an extent. NCAA: top programs make hundreds of millions off these guys so I understand maybe being able to receive $$$ for your autographs (while still on the team) or jerseys etc but it just opens up a giant slippery slope imo.

It’s honestly kind of depressing.

I think it’s a bit odd too? But apparently several teams do as the rule was changed specifically for that purpose.

As a 40 something year old guy, I think some of these players will look back in 25 years and wish they had stayed in college.

We won our Region and went to the State tournament in basketball my Sophomore year of high school, and it is still one of my best memories.

I was talking to a couple of my teammates from that team last month. Both successful, great families. Both played college ball. Both agreed that winning that Regional and playing in State was one of their all time favorite experiences.

Now multiply that times 1000 and imagine you’re Tyler Herro, hitting the game winner in the Elite Eight this time, or even in the Title game.

Can’t put a price on it.

Leaving when they do is often the most logical decision. I can’t fault them for it. But it doesn’t mean they’ll look back three decades from now and feel like it was the right decision. Doesn’t make them immune to regret.

They can now get an NCAA certified agent to help them through the draft process, and still return to school.

As far as NBA teams, they keep extensive databases on hundreds of players. They would love to evaluate a player like EJ, not only to see where he stands today, but to create a baseline for the sake of comparison if they bring him in again at a future date.

I didn’t read the 5000 comments. Clearly states if he gets a first rd guarantee. I mean why are people so shocked. If he gets one god bless him and let him get paid. Same thing pj did along with the 300 kids going thru the draft process lol. No real story here.

I can save EJ so much time and give him the feedback he is going to get. Develop a few offensive post moves, develop a more consisent mid-range game, add some more muscle, avoid jumping on shot fakes, learn to play with back to basket in addition to a face-up game.

Dude was lost most of the time on the floor. His best games were against teams that sucked and the game was already won. He can see where he stands but he’s not even a second round pick

Maybe one day we will see the whole team leave, what a water shed moment for UK that will be. Maybe greater than draft night.

At this point, I’d love to see it blow up just like that one time just for pure entertainment. I want to see an entire roster leave including walk ons.

And EJ dosen't....KJ is NOT an NBA player. Is he going to be a first rounder ...yes, but he dosent have the game. He is soft . He'll get his money though and that's fine.

Diallo came back after not getting the feedback he wanted.

At the last second. That guy couldn’t wait to leave. I love that he said he wasn’t ready to play when Cal asked him and then declared for the draft right after the season.

Hands down, my least favorite player to ever play under Cal.

Whether they meant it or not, haven't a couple of our 1st rounders said they wish they would have come back?

Questions, because I don’t know and apologizes if they been asked- don’t want to read through everything. How many players are invited to the combine, and would EJ have an honest shot of being invited? If a player is not invited to the combine, can they then do individual team workouts or something similar?

Edit: Aike is correct.

2016
"College basketball underclassmen will have more flexibility to test their NBA draft status without jeopardizing their eligibility under rule changes approved Wednesday at the NCAA annual convention.
Players will be allowed to enter the draft multiple times and participate in the combine and one NBA team tryout per year. They also will be allowed up to 10 days to withdraw from the draft after the combine."

LMFAO. thought this had to be a joke when I saw this post. OMFG. well that's it. ima go join the draft for a bit and see what i got! WOW. don't even have the words right now...just un frigg'n'believable. My Gawd are we all taking crazy pills!? WTF does EJ think he has to offer the NBA after the season he just had? I can see an evaluator as he walks in...."Umm, sir, I know who you are. I love your height but.....please give it another shot and MAYBE just MAYBE we'll see each other again at this time next year but i'm not holding my breathe." WOW!

If you think you know better than the entire combine/feedback/testing the waters system, sure. But all of these guys seem to find it useful or else they wouldn't bother.

Anyone in sports or teaching or really any walk of life knows that a lot of times, a different voice and different set of eyes can help a lot. Having an NBA coach or GM or longtime vet tell you something is going to stick in a way it might not from your dad or friend or college coach.

We also know several of these coaches don't have the kids' best interest at heart. And even if they do, the people around the kid don't always believe that. Hearing it from the league can be a big dose of reality.

If I owned an NBA team and had to decide which UK player would add more to my team in 3 years, I would take EJ over KJ. More upside.

I think he tried, just struggled mentally.

Vanderbilt refused to play when healthy. He gets my least favorite award.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Although not a popular thing to say amongst college sports fans, major college sports is a total hypocrisy, a sham. It's all about the money now. The NCAA is desperately trying to maintain the facade of amateur status and their only means of controlling the purse strings but are loosing their grip. Events are unfolding and accelerating on almost a monthly basis now that will eventually mean the end of the NCAA amateur status hoax.

Given that as a backdrop this is somehow EJ's fault for not devoting his life to UK and by extension it's fans? Like most, he chose UK because of the UK to NBA track record that's been established. It's not an ideal model for us fans but it is what it is and it's better than most.
