Well, not voluntarily. He got fired.

And he actually wanted to stay in the NBA. After he got fired, he took a job as a Sixer assistant in the hopes of staying. He only went back to college after it was clear nobody else in the league was interested in him.

What I took from the article is something of a different take.
In that article it says something about Coach Cal been thinking about a return to the NBA if the right situation came about. If this is true, then for me, it says something about his commitment to UK. One can not have his heart in one place and his head in another.
As a old coach, we always told our players, "get your head and heart in the right direction and your feet will follow".
If Coach Cal has been looking at the NBA for the right situation, this may explain some of the failures we have seen the last few years.

Problem is the entire roster could bolt like at LSU. Also, who would do better? Put your hands down!
We just lost to a bunch of one stars with the NPOY!!

We have been losing the majority of the roster every season since Triple C arrived.

I‘ll take a roster full of Kentucky born walk ons and a good head coach that cares about winning at UK first!

The timing of this is interesting seeing how Aaron Torres who has gone to the mattresses to defend Cal even threw shade at him with an interview with Colin Cowherd yesterday. Mentioned how he understand why UK fans are frustrated and that it's not Kentucky fans being unreasonable with expectations but just sick of the things that have been repeated here numerous times--not getting top recruits, losing all the big games (Torres even compared the current UK basketball program to the Dallas Cowboys). So you have him mention that and believe Torres is a west coast guy despite being a UConn fan, but know Cowherd is, and this Devaney report which seems to have 0 info and more speculation comes up. The minute I smelled BS was "Cal is a god at Kentucky". This guy doesn't have any clue what is going on in CBB let alone at Kentucky.

Not trying to be a downer for those who want change to happen but just being realistic. This would make 0 interest on either end.
Couldn’t you give me just one hour? Just kidding, of course. Hard to give a lifetime to something, even though it’s just sports, and not just
ROFLMAO!!! Media baiting you guys like hell. Talking head throws a bare hook in the water and KY hater grabs it before it gets wet.
But why would the media be baiting us if there’s no need? Strange response.

Who do you see having success replacing Calipari and they better be winning out the gate. We are Kentucky and won’t stand for nothing less than championships every year.

Name one reason they would want him.
The only thing I can think of is if AD and Lebron have said that’s someone they’d be interested in playing for given last relationships

Honestly an ideal situation for everyone involved.

Cal gets to coach his most prominent player again and the face of the NBA. He doesn’t have to worry about the changing landscape and the transfer portal. He gets away from the fanbase that he despises and the “unrealistic expectations to put the program first”. In the NBA he just has to please the front office and his players. The Fans have Minimal influence.

On our end we get to move on to a Program first coach without looking like we ran a HOFer out of town. I think Cal could get to another final 4 here but I believe we are bang or bust with him now. It’s not a coincidence we’ve had multiple missed tournament appearances, the worst season ever, and a loss to a 15 in the last 5 years. Can Cal still land some big recruits and have a big year....absolutely. Can that 1 big year be surrounded by 2-4 years of not winning the SEC and first weekend exits...absolutely. Self may only have 1 Title but he consistently wins 30 games and conference titles and E8s. And he puts his program before everything else. I appreciate that more and more now that we aren’t getting every top recruit

He wants to be begged to stay…his ego needs this.

I actually will take Torres stance which is UK fans want to CONTEND/COMPETE for championships every year. You all are loyal to the program and as long as they are doing what it takes and showing the program cares about Kentucky....you'll support them. If UK loses to a team in Elite 8, Final Four it stinks, but you are right there with the program. Now you can't excuse St. Peter's. Missing the Tournament. Ruining all the traditional events/games/outings that Kentucky loves.

I think there are numerous guys who would jump at this job. Hypothetically you open this up, you aren't replacing the Cal from '10-'15 who was fantastic, you are replacing the version who is ducking IU, won't play in Maui or Holiday Tournaments, won't do home/homes, talks of losses as not mattering, has bent the knee to Rick Barnes of all coaches, has not recruited at the level that he once did--but isn't getting guys to stay either. It would be time for someone to come take this job.

Personally, I'd look at a younger guy to grow-but my top young coach was Todd Golden who UF just hired. If I went current top guys, I'd make a run at Scott Drew, Eric Musselman, still not as down on Nate Oats as others, also like Tommy Lloyd but doubt he'd leave Arizona, and I'd have been fine if Kenny Payne got a chance here but he's at U of L so he'd out. For a guy who I'm intrigued by I'll throw a name some would be shocked by mentioning but I like Jerry Stackhouse. Stackhouse is someone I could see winning big at a better program. He's type I like in that he played at highest level and can relate to elite players in being recruited, pressure of blueblood program, trying to get to NBA, etc...but understand if some think that's crazy. Think he's really doing right things to get Vanderbilt competitive and recruiting very well with some guys who are underrated but will be good college players--like the guard Noah Shelby a lot.

I hope Anthony Davis would do that for us fans! He really does love us if he’s telling the Lakers front office he wants Cal as his next head coach!

This is probably the typical yearly rumor of cal leaving to hurt recruiting, or get cal a raise.
But it's not a reach to think cal will could leave for greener pastures if thinks he can get his ego stroked.
His ego is rightfully taking a pummeling right now at Kentucky. Hopefully he will leave to "show us."

Lebron has one more yr with Lakers , and he‘s going to wherever drafts his son , so he says . Maybe two years . Idk if cal is a guy you’d want during a potential transition period for them. He’d be more a ‘roll the ball out’ option

I’m playing the BS card. This sounds like Cal’s camp putting something out there. He’s got to know BBN is big time p!$$ed off at him. This feels like a ploy for UK fans to say oh we really didn’t mean anything. Please don’t go. If he wants to go, then go. I won’t lose one wink of sleep over it.

If it is, they’re dumber than a sack of rocks.Uk fans aren’t dumb. And, eventually, win out. Look at our history.

This wreaks of the usual college coach facing scrutiny wanting to drum up "please don't go" and this time around it's not going to work at all. Nobody is buying that in order:

1. Lakers want him
2. He'd give up the $ Kentucky is giving him/his family
3. He's a "god" at Kentucky? This Devaney doesn't sound like he's up to date with things

I've seen this ploy far too often and the fact is, nobody cares. This isn't the time to do it, yet the coaches always need a "hug" to reassure themselves. Get out on the road this week and WORK. 63 yr old retreads from CBB aren't the rage of NBA basketball and certainly aren't going to ail what the Lakers need to fix things.

That’s exactly what this sounds like. It’s the first thing I thought before opening the thread.
