Cal on NIL and Transfer Portal

My take is different here. I took what he was saying as:

-If a transfer reaches out and asks about NIL immediately--we pass which I agree with. You have a roster of guys you recruited/selected the program, and some Transfer putting an asking price ahead of how they'd fit basketball wise...pass on them. Causes team chemistry issues.

-He's right about facilities--you have to stay at least even if you are a program like Kentucky or you fall behind. That's not about just helping himself either, it's helping who replaces him.

-The Jai Lucas thing....think he's playing to the fact some read that Lucas may have wanted more $ and UK declined. That would be dismissing/firing and he's just saying "Lucas chose to leave for a better personal situation".

-Big Blue Madness being stale/in need of being reenergized is 100% true. It's a boring unwatchable event and part of it would be dumping the wasted women's crap--but that will never happen in today's "Basketball is Basketball" lie that everyone embraces while most cringe inside knowing that there's a significant difference.

-Really was interested in his take on the Player Development/Who did you help approach to hiring the next Assistant.

-Did he mention anything about Strength and Conditioning Hire? That's another area they can upgrade the program.

Actually like how he's speaking to Issel/Pratt and being more vocal. Know some are just sick of hearing his voice, but you can't hide when you have been part of failing. Need to be the same person you were all along. Whether fans have doubts/want change (which I understand and agree in many areas) at least he's speaking and not hiding. Now the thing that comes with speaking, is you get held to your word. He's stating that '23 recruiting is "we're ahead of the game"-that has to deliver. This fails....and no excuses. Going to use his words against him as HE stated this and nobody questioned this at all.
Totally agree with this. Last paragraph in particular. He's all talk until the season ends. The results are the boss. If he says he's going to change and doesn't, he should take responsibility. He never does. He just brushes it off. Called 2021 a 'throwaway year' and scoffed at people bringing it up. Then threw the players under the bus this year and said he couldn't drag them over the finish line. Man is a coward when he doesn't get results, and apparently Matt Jones tried to hold him accountable and is now persona non grata. If people can't see what's happening here with this megalomaniac, they are blind.

These players are collectively awful. Pure trash for the most part. I cannot stand the sight of most of these kids coming out. I’d look some of them right in the eye along with their “handlers” and tell them if you want to improve, become well adjusted, win, and be a part of something bigger than yourself then come on. If you’re asking for money, don’t make the trip there’s no need.

People need to begin to stand up to this nonsense. None of them are victims and most of them need to be told to hit the bridge.

There’s no way for any of this to sustain. Time to put the screws down and stop caving to it.
Well said. Many on hear decried the one and done because the one and done didn’t play for the name on the front. This mercenary approach is worse.

It probably is.

But what are we going to do now? Take the Moneyball approach?

"The problem is that there are rich teams, and there are poor teams. Then there's 50 feet of crap. And then there's us. We are the last dog at the bowl!"

Funny I haven't heard a comment from Dook that they won't discuss NIL with a potential transfer. That may in fact be their policy as well BUT, you don't advertise it to the world in a interview! You handle it privately as the situation presents itself. Now, other programs have Calipari on record saying it and can simply play that recording to anyone they are competing with UK for.

The facilities thing was almost guaranteed to come up after the announcement about the football upgrades. Maybe the bball facilities do need upgraded, I don't know. But, Calipari could also be setting Barnhart up as the scapegoat and a excuse for him to retire in the near future. "The university won't invest in the bball program and I can no longer do my job without new or upgraded facilities. So, I am retiring."
Now that I read what I typed (in Calipari's voice), it seems like a good way to try and push him out! LOL!

I don't like the whole state of NIL either but, it is the way things are. Barnhart, Calipari etc. had better change their approach and fast or they'll all be left in the dust of irrelevancy. You can't just sit it out hoping the NCAA will create some limits on a school's association with businesses for the purpose of NIL.

Schools don’t give NIL deals. What are you talking about.
Not directly. But that have a rep that works with players. UK hired one to help be the liaison between athletes, “agents”, NIL providers and the school. Whole brand new position.

He’s against players demanding desks before they sign. Which is exactly what 90% on here wants him to do. But they spin it to be bad.
I don’t want him issuing blanket statements like today. Each player is going to have to be evaluated individually.

THAT is the name of the game right now. Him saying we will never do it just shot us in the foot. Big time. Because now kids will go to places that will at least listen.

FFS...we'll barely have enough for a 5 on 5 practice.
Does he really do 5 on 5? Well, I am sure he does some. I remember being surprised last year after players had been on campus about 2 months or better and Cal saying they hadn't scrimmaged yet, while Kansas and others had been going at it for a month.

Yep this was a DUNDERHEAD MOVE by Cal.

I think he did it on purpose. He's advertising it as a way to get back at Mitch or whoever and let the public know that it's not his fault. This is a PR war, boys. Cal is on his way out.

And yet Dickie V said UK has an unfair advantage with NIL. Why would he say that? And why would a player call a school demanding a guarantee? Are these players just stupid or are there some schools meeting those demands?

How long can a program and its boosters sustain NIL for players who dont produce any income for the people paying them.
How does Pack's name and image produce finacial gain for anyone in Miami?
Miami is a pro town that doesnt give a **** about CBB, look up their attendance.
Also what happens to a kid who's NIL deal is coming from a Nevin Shapiro type or anyone else who really doesnt have the money to make good on the deal?
The school is not on the hook because tge university itself cannot enter into an NIL deal with a player.

I'm not smart enough to contribute the topic of NIL/Portal strategies for the university. As long as I can blame cal and mitch for everything I don't understand, sign me up!

These two guys have destroyed the basketball program and I can't wait for the day they leave.

I am guessing you were not around for many of the other lull periods in UK history, or maybe you said the same thing about all the other down seasons. No clue.

So he doesn’t want to do bidding wars with transfers but it’s ok for Oscar to return due to the high NIL payments when he would have been going pro if that wasn’t a thing? Makes perfect sense.
It's also ok to pay Sharpe a ton for not playing.

His behaviors are so contradictory. That's why I'm wondering if he's leaving.

Except we don't have a full roster so how do you expect Cal to get transfers we need without NIL?The guy is actually bragging about a commit to come soon who is unranked. That's not going to get it done.
He's not opposed to NIL, but way I read it--if you are a Transfer and first thing you mention is NIL, they are passing, which I fully understand. It should be about fit on the court/how you play and then you can eventually get to the NIL part because let's face it-he has a person (TJ Beisner) literally on staff to help the players with NIL-which is part of the recruiting package.

Some of the UK fans takes make 0 sense. You want guys who want to come for "UK" and then the HC says something along those lines and it's **** on? At some point you can't have it all ways.

Was he bragging? Thought he was just saying they'll have a commit coming on board soon. I think many are assuming it's Thiero too. I think Thiero would be a nice addition and type of player that UK should be targeting for end of bench/development role, but now that's being **** on too. The Thiero kid played for same AAU program that had Oscar Tshiebwe, Cam/Puff Johnson of UNC and Nate Sestina, and his Dad actually played for Cal which means he at least knows how things operate and if they say you'll have a chance to compete/role increase over years--likely by '24 season..they'll buy in.

You got that right!! Anyone who thinks those recruits weren’t being compensated to come here are either naive, dumb, or both.

Recruits have always been compensated to go to every college. Yeah, Alabama football could pay more than UAB football, but sure the UAB level players get some $20.00 handshakes instead of $100.00 for example. Everyone cheats, and has a system to make sure they do not get caught. It is the bigtime greedy ones that sometimes have got caught over history, but a very small percentage of cheating gets caught. Personally I couldn't care less about the players getting money the old fashioned way or the NIL way. Good for them.

No offense but you aren't a UK fan and don't care for the program. We will have 10 players with the Thiero addition.CJ has been hurt every season and if he goes down is this kid ready to replace him? It's safe to say no.Arkansas can add a whole other team but Cal refuses to get enough good players and is the highest paid coach out there.I have had enough.

Exactly. If Cal had said that he intends to outbid Duke for players, posters would be screaming about that. This is sooooo entertaining!
I don’t believe that for a second. If cal had said, we will be very active and competitive with nil marketing, I think most everyone would have been happy. That said, I don’t believe cal is staying out of the nil bidding wars by choice. That would go against his nature . I believe his hands are being tied in some regard .
