Another thing not mentioned is there has been a ton of animosity with the fan base about him playing his son Bryce too much and not taking him out of games when he gets torched defensively. Boosters hired a plane to fly over the beach asking for him to be fired a couple years ago. There has been a ton of tension between the Alford's and the UCLA fan base through the years.

In all fairness, he is only in his 4th year but he isn't liked much out there.

I'm hearing it's certainly possible. I don't see it however. If so, could we get the other two Balls to UK?
You crazy?we don't want them. The one that scored 92 never crossed half court most of the night and the other one is not very good...nope don't need them here

Alford wasn't even interested when he was at Iowa and Sampson got fired. No way he goes to IU, ever.

Leave Beverly Hills/Bel Aire area, quick trip down Sunset to the PCH with Santa Monica Beach if you turn left off Sunset, Malibu if you turn right for the hell hole know as Indiana? SoCal is beautiful and in his income bracket a great place to love, Bloomington is well.......Bloomington.

Alford is not well-liked in California. I could see him leave but not for IU unless there is a LOT going on behind the scenes.
By who ? They don't have a diehard fan following . Are you referring to the administration ?

What kind of money is Alford making out there? I remember Steve Lavin saying that UCLA doesn't pay like most other schools.

Indiana job > UCLA job

Indiana has everything UCLA does plus a fanbase like ours. Win there and you're on Hoosier Mount Rushmore with RMK, Damon Bailey and Norman Dale. Not that he'd definitely take it, but Indiana should be able to hire just about anybody they want.

Why not? UCLA will fire anyone not named John Wooden. Get out while the getting's good. At IU, Crean-like results will take him into retirement.

Two big reasons to leave would be taxes and the tight athletic budgets of California universities.
Not at all, he is making so much he doesn't even worry about taxes i would say, and as far as budget goes, these coaches make way more money from Nike,Reebok etc than they do the school

Media and all 10 of their fans![winking]. As for the fans, the diehards are not impressed and some key boosters were not happy with the hire. The media were critical of the hire from the start.

I think he's hoping to take the job before Reggie Miller gets an offer.

I only found this link because of a family member who is an IU fan (ugh) on Facebook. Reading through it, however, looks more to be complete speculation and hope than it does any kind of real fact. But it being deleted (the tweets) could be because Alford wants to obviously focus on UCLA and the tournament rather than create a distraction with any IU chatter.

Aside from that, would Reggie Miller actually take this job seriously? I mean it seems IU is a mess - who on earth would want it?

That would be a great hire. It would put IU firmly in that Sweet Sixteen seeetspot, just good enough to not get fired, just mediocre enough to not win a championship.

Whereas Archie Miller or Gregg Marshall would have them contending for championships quickly.

Sorry, it was sarcasm. Alford wanted and sort of expected the Indiana Pacers to draft him (#11) in 1987 and there is some pretty good footage of him when they drafted Miller instead. Then, of course, Alford continued to drop (he went #26 to Dallas). I was surmising that this might finally be Alford's chance to beat out Reggie for something. (With also the slight irony that Alford coaches Reggie's alma mater).

Some friends bought the Alford's house when they left Iowa. Evidently no one there liked him either. Apparently he never leaves behind many friends whe he moves on to the next job....

I know it is fun to crush IU but let me give you a small amount of backstory and maybe some insight on this. Steve Alford is a God to basically anyone over 30 in the state of Indiana (high school kid's parents). This is where your boosters land and where the money comes from. He would immediately be seen as the savior and a return to the "right" way. Say what you want but for a while now Indiana high school ball has been head and shoulders above Kentucky. It fell off a bit when they did away with single class ball but the product is better. One of the biggest gripes I hear is that Tom focuses on the East Coast and not on the home grown kids. Why in the hell is Kyle Guy playing at UVA, why did Zach Irvin go to UM, why did Gary Harris go to MSU (he was a better WR than a hooper btw), DeShaun Thomas, Swanigan, Lyles, the list goes on. Crean could go 0-30 and be fine in some fan's eyes if he had a team full of Indiana guys. Many people see Alford as the guy who could get those kids to stay home.
I don't know if he would take the job but I know that the boosters would offer him a blank check if Crean leaves. They aren't firing him unless something changes and may even quietly extend him over the summer so that he would cover one more graduating class.

One ball is one and done. The other two balls are pretty unspectacular. They just hang around outside and try to draw contact.

Was Bear Bryant Kentucky's coach for that Sugarbowl?
