I watched the 15 min highlights on youtube. Looks like a bunch of run behind McCeever, take the hand off from him and shoot 3s. Not many non system scorers.

What are you talking about? Pick a better post to try and call me out next time.
?? Your post #54 was "One of Koch or Sage needs to make a leap". Generally that would mean they need to play much better than last year. Down the stretch last year, especially in the NCAA they were two of our best players and difference makers.

I said earlier I think he'll earn a s;pot in the rotation in the next year
I said when he was at the free throw line at the end of the game that you can tell the kid has been in the weight room. Sure he isn’t Andre Woolridge, but who is? For a kid a year and change out of high school, who didn’t inherit High-Major D1 genetics from his parents, he seems to be putting the work in to someday earn some important playing time.

I am getting a Sam Hoiberg vibe, does that sound about right? Tia
I was thinking the same, but then immediately gagged because I compared him to a former Husker.

But unfortunately (as a Hawk fan), yes, that is the immediate comparison I thought of.

A very pesky pest on defense and the offense is good enough to stay on the floor for stretches.

Jirak's body change and mobility impressed me. PM is very tenacious on defense, but not sure how he will compare to BIG guards. First game hard to get a read on team, but BIG will be tough...........

I was expecting more of a presence from McKeiver in the middle.
I know, the season is still young. He just didn't impress me last night.
Ya the athleticism and dominance you'd expect from a 7"3 guy is missing but the size and threat of him will be big benefit. We lost several games last year because we just couldn't match the other teams size in the paint including the E8 loss to Illinois. That's why centers are so high in demand. You either have size or you don't. He'll give are ball handlers and guys running off ball off screens a lot more freedom. If you don't respect him crashing down off the roll we can go over top for easy dunk/layup. Defensively he'll clog the middle and rebound. The impact he'll make will be greater than just his statistics imo which I think will be close to what they were at St Mary's.

Tom Davis used to say you need a big guy to neutralize the other teams big guy.

BM mentioned in post game that he could have just ran the same actions to McKeever in the post over and over again (to score) but used this game to try a bunch of different lineups and plays. So it's hard to really gauge much IMO

Missing FTs is really the only "negative" I took from the game last night

I went to the game last night and while I am not a basketball savant...it was apparent to me that they were "trying things". It was, well, an exhibition.

I was not loving Coleman's FT's, form and concentration, though. I would not look for him to be on the floor much during fouling time. Just saying.

I think we can all agree that wasn't a very impressive first half. Very premature but here are my thoughts...

A few bright spots that are a bit surprising... Peyton and Jirak. If Coleman can convert / improve his decision making; particularly around the rim and he'll be a major asset. He's quick, no doubt.

Combs looked really solid. I'm sure Koch and Sage will come around. Not a good match up for McKeever. Cam with a few bright spots.
How can a team from this level be a bad match up for McKeever?

As usual lots of people being ridiculous in a 1st exhibition game. McKeever hasn't been a dominating presence even with his size and probably still won't be. But he's what Ben wanted after seeing all these giant teams in the B1G last year. He's not going to go out and get 20 and 10 but that's not what he's needed for. And of course it's certainly going to look differently when you lose a guy who handled the ball 98% of the time last year. And Ben is not the guy who likes to play 10 guys, never really has. Obviously trying to find out who plays better with who and who can and will play defense. Zero worries. I can guarantee that even if we lose a few early we will be an entirely new team later in the year.

You going to watch this game @Hawk-A-Doodle-Doo?
Doodle couldn't watch due to some family obligations....but from the extended highlights on YT it sure looked like they tried some interesting lineup combinations. Will be fascinating to see how Ben fine tunes that as the season goes along. Defense was shaky at times, but maybe also a byproduct of still figuring out the personnel groupings.

Despite going to the Elite 8, it's pretty obvious were not quite a plug-and-play type of program just yet. Still very much in mix-and-match mode.

Weird game. At times athleticism looked terrific...at other times we looked like a slightly above average Y League squad. But overall, the point of these exhibitions is to knock off the rust, work on some things that are still nagging at the coaches from whatever they've seen in practice, and start the process of building cohesion. Looked like that kinda sorta started to work itself out for a nice chunk of time from the start of the second half until about midway through. Then it seemed to get sloppy again.

All in all, we really do seem to have a lot of nice pieces. Now we just have to have faith in Ben and his staff to put the puzzle together properly.

Ben said in the post game "Drew" had missed 4 or 5 days of practice, so I think he's been under the weather. Still in limited minutes he had 7 assists. They'll run the offense through him a lot, and he'll be a presence in the paint on defense.

I thought Jirak probably played the most consistent in his minutes.
