As long as the keys aren't in the ignition they can't get you for DUI.
A lot of newer cars are keyless (push button start) now, so that rule is antiquated. I would guess that sitting in a running car would suffice since, in the days when all ignitions had keys, the car couldn't be running if the key weren't in the ignition.

Reminds me of past AJ threads, to be honest.
AJ's transgressions are far, far worse than JW's (AJ has been caught driving lethally multiple times without alcohol involved, JW was just passed out in a stationary running car...), and AJ is far more destructive to team chemistry, and people on here were still clamoring for him long after it was well known what a complete pile of crap he is. With that said, it's more than fair to say it's time to move on from JW since it's clear he hasn't amended his ways.

You still have to have the key fob in the vehicle to start it correct?

IMO Brands would be a total hypocrite based on his prior handling of Pat Downey.

Holy ****. LOL...you can't be serious with this. LMAO

Stick around where, Iowa City? No thanks. When someone repeatedly shows you who they are, eventually it's best to believe them. It's long past time to move on.

Eh these two offenses, though not great, aren't really "kick him off the team" worthy. Perhaps there's some other stuff about him I'm not aware of that might change my mind if I knew.

Regardless, between his behavior and lack of performance, it's laughable he's the best option we have at a weight for two years running.

I think he came to Iowa with a past with other offenses or behavior. I no longer think he is the best option, its a long wrestling season and it don't look like he has much dedication to anything other than himself.

I have a 23 Honda Accord, and I do need the fob in the car in order to start it, but it is a push button start, so there is no key to put in the ignition. I don't know if there are fancier cars that can run just on an app without a key at all.

Not much comparison between JW and AJ. They both wrestled at Okie St and that’s kind of where it ends. AJ had sexual assault charges, allegedly strangled a pregnant woman, and evaded police at high speeds, ultimately pleading to a felony. Jordan’s issues are much more minor. The kid clearly has some growing up to do and I hope he figures it out before he seriously hurts himself or someone else.

I hope he gets some help and can overcome his obvious addiction. He needs Iowa wrestling more than Iowa wrestling needs him, so I tend to trust those closest to the situation. I have been critical of the Brands brothers in many things, but you couldn't find better guys when it comes to helping young men in situations like this. I hope he is granted another chance.

Why are we arguing the legality of a kid who has had problems in the past passing out **** faced in the drivers seat of his running vehicle with an open container. Feel like the discussion should be if he should still be on the team, not what he’ll be charged with.
It's laughable!

This is more than growing up. Sounds like a disease to me. He needs help and wrestling IS NOT IT. Wrestling has not shown him the discipline he needs to over come the problem. Get him in a program fix himself move on from wrestling and learn how to live your life.

I do believe the Brands are great guys and your sentiment sounds good on paper. But why do folks think kids should still have privileges to things they no longer deserve just on the principle they could further spiral?

If he stays on the team but is never allowed to wrestle for Iowa or represent a weight at NCAA's, gets help and goes to class, I could sign up for the structure argument because its really all about him then.

The problem is that this is JW's 4th or 5th transgression since OSU. Not all led to arrest. All alcohol. I was told that if JW had one beer, he had ten. No stop button until ****-faced. The real harm to the team is that TNT have to spend time dealing with a likely non contributor because he has never shown that he is a contributor. At some point TNT have limited resources for 30 guys. May as well be on the right 30 guys.

If that is true that is textbook alcoholism. He’ll need to come to terms with the fact that he and alcohol simply can’t coexist. Hopefully, this is his rock bottom and he can put in the work to get better, but he definitely can’t do it alone.

The comparison has little to with details of the crimes/transgressions of the two individuals. Imo, it has more to do with some fans’ ability to rationalize bad behavior based on technicalities. But that’s just me….

It is sad. Change has to come from within though. Not sure he is there yet unfortunately. He desperately wanted to stay at OSU but it was hoped that getting him away from his crowd there would give him a new lease on his wrestling life. He just found new enablers at LR.

That may be true, but I haven't been arrested for public intox and/or DUI. It's okay to say someone has an issue when drinking.

“Get the help he needs” is such a lame excuse. Is anyone other than Williams preventing him from cleaning up/being helped? Iowa moved on from Williams last season for a reason. Time to move on again…
Alcoholics don't stop until they're ready . But having positive people around and people you know care can help the person realize they gotta stop. I hope he stays in Iowa going back home won't be good for him. We all have opinions

No, it's not just you. These win-it-all-costs guys are willing to overlook anything if it could translate to a few extra points at Nationals. For a crappy wrestler, they'd want them off the team in a heartbeat, with no second (or third) chances.

Just like in the real world if you're good at your job you can miss work more and get written up more then the person who's not good . Those damn win at all cost bosses🤷

Unfortunately, that simply isn’t true. If it were, far fewer families would be devastated by alcoholism and addiction.

If what you mean is that, during active recovery, having positive influences, a strong support system, and the appropriate resources can greatly improve a person’s ability to maintain sobriety, then I absolutely agree.

I don’t share much about my professional background, and I rarely post on the wrestling boards, but I say this from the perspective of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who ran an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program for 10 years. One of the most important things I learned is that everyone’s “bottom” is different. Unfortunately, from what we can see, it just doesn’t appear that he is anywhere near his yet.

What makes it particularly disappointing is the amount of promise he shows on the wrestling mat—especially in freestyle. There is clearly a great deal of potential there, which makes watching these struggles even more unfortunate. Iowa is such a great program and their success is highly important for college wrestling!!!

Everyone is different for sure . Saying everyone's rock bottom is different then saying it doesn't appear that he's anywhere near his yet without knowing him or talking with him as a trained professional is wild.
Having support around you never hurts regardless the situation

The part that gets me is that his behavior was bad enough, apparently, that he was pulled from the line up last season. Then he shows up with a photoshopped pic of him flashing cash with TnT on either side of him. Then he catches more charges.

That photo changed my opinion of him. The latest charges sealed the deal for me. He’s now just another distraction, imo.

Again, I love your presence on message boardsCorby and some of your posts are so intriguing and insightful; however, you don't need to be in LCSW to look at his history and state: It doesn't appear that he hit his bottom. Notice how I say it doesn't appear, lol that's because I anticipate the comment that you just made!!! lol, would it appear to you that he's reached his bottom? Again, being a professional, you don't make absolute about anyone, especially if you're clinically writing. Hence, me stating it would appear. Lol

I don't care if he ever wrestles again if he can overcome his addiction. My opinion is Tom feels the same way.

Can you never seek help and get well without hitting "rock bottom" and who determines what that is?

yes.

It's just different for different people obviously. One of my high school coaches had a father that was an alcoholic. He told us when he was about 15, his dad got belligerently drunk, got aggressive with his wife and our coach had to get in between them.

Left the house and when he came back, sat the family down and said he would never drink again. Dude has been dry sober since that day. His "bottom" was realizing what he was doing to his family. Stories like this are few and far between, but much like everything else in life, addiction recovery is a spectrum.
