I played football in the 80s and got pushed, shoved, and jerked around by coaches in practice all the time.
But in a game against Starkville High, down by 20 at the half, one of the assistant coaches decided to welcome us into the locker room by swatting every players backside with a paddle. He was hitting each of them three or more times. And the guys were just lining up and taking it.
I'd been paddled by the sadistic 17 before in his teacher role and I thought it was bullsh t.
Our team lacked talent and sucked. I was only a 10th grader riding the bench, so when I got up to him I said, 'touch my *** with that paddle and see if you have a job on Monday.' Then a stare down.
He put the paddle away. My practices were hell the next week, but I got to start the last two games of the season. Mostly, because we really did suck.
To the video, a coach shouldn't embarrass a kid like that. He should have apologized right there.
Seems the coach may have a drinking problem or a tough marriage.
Should be reprimanded and written up. Not fired. Of course, the kid's family may think otherwise.
