I doubt he was aiming at the kids nutt ( at that age left ain’t dropped yet). He just kicked the ball out of frustration. Not trying to hit or injur anyone. Big nothing burger in my old man opinion

The question though is should he have been fired ?

1) a leather air filled sack is not a deadly weapon

2) he could not have kicked the ball in anger and hit the kid in the groin if you gave him 1000 more tries, so I doubt that was his intention

it is wrong behavior and he should get chewed out by the AD and have to apologize to the kid and team, i Agree.

i played HS football in the 80s and this was common place coach goes nuts behavior. I ran a wrong pass pattern, a curl, and our 250 pound HC went nuts and when I wasn’t looking threw me to the ground. I had a helmet and pads on, was surprised but not upset. We laughed about it later. I never even considered telling my parents or filing a complaint.
Hah...I got put in the circle when the coach thought I was not aggressive enough as nose tackle. I went against him.

I guess I’m just old school. My coach in SOFL taught Woody Hays how to grab face masks and ear hole helmets. If you didn’t want it to happen again, you didn’t 17 up again
They also left players to role themselves off the field and did not give a shot of they were really hurt or not. Many many kids were injured for life.
Count me as one, broke my back none even checked on me.
I was concussed and a coach picked me up and stood me on my feet and left in. I just stood there rest of practice, never moved. When I woke up, I was still standing in same place. Everyone had left the practice field. I made my way to the veiled house and many had already left.
17 old school pricks like that!

Quit excusing a coach losing his ****. If a man can’t control that **** He does not belong in the school system. It’s a damn game.

That’s my opinion also, we don’t have enough information. He could be a good guy who really cares about his players and no history of being out of control, or he could be a real @hole who deserves to get canned.
A man that can’t control his **** should not be around children. Do not try justify that ****. You have plenty of information you have just been programmed to accept it.

So, I am a bit surprised at the responses, I really thought it would swing the other way in favor of not firing. I'm older and played in the 70's and this would have been just another day at practice. Not saying those supporting firing are wrong, just shows a transition in beliefs.

He ended up getting fired. I'm of the opinion a firing is a bit too much if it was the first time. Suspension for a few weeks. If it's a pattern of behavior - then firing is warranted.

I mean...its a half century- I would be surprised if there hadn't been change to how people view a coach losing their shit and injuring a player.
No longer excusing the violent outbursts of coaches or the mistreatment of children by coaches, is definitely a societal improvement in my lifetime.

Even Indiana had enough of Bobby Knight back in 2000.

again, not saying your take is wrong about the coaches outburst, but football is an extremely violent sport and on the injury scale, that falls into the minor category. If he was wearing a cup it probably doesn't even show up on anyone's radar.

If you wanna be a hard *** then the consequences of a mistake may be hard too.
This sums up what I was going to say too. I don't think the badass coach necessarily intended to hurt the kid, he was just emphasizing whatever he was yelling at him and kicked the ball in a fit of anger, then I think got a bit unlucky that the ball hit the dude in the junk or whatever...

BUTTTTTT, since billy badass walked away without checking on the kid and generally had what seems like an "oh well, he deserved it for 17'ing up" attitude, then I would say that's my reaction to his firing. "Oh well, he deserved it for 17'ing up".

What's the coach's defense? "I didn't mean to, it was a mistake"? Yeah well that's probably what the kid would say too, given the chance before you blasted his balls, Tough Guy.

It’s really not clear which player he was mad at, the kid who got hit with ball just happened to catch a stray. That was my impression.

Yeah, I understand you werent saying the 'fire him' viewpoint was wrong.
I was just confirming that yes, the general overall view has changed when it comes to the mistreatment of players by coaches and violent outbursts by coaches.

As for it not being an issue if the kid is wearing a cup(wont show up on our radar), that I do disagree with. I think you are missing what the actual issue is.
The issue is the behavior. The coach lost his shit and yelled while he walked for 10 yards, aggressively kicked a football right at a player who was being yelled at, and walked away.
All of that is still unacceptable, even if the kid was wearing a cup.

Intent is irrelevant he is responsible for for his actions.

So if you take intent out of it you are left with a coach who got mad and hit a player in the nuts. That is way worse than grabbing a face mask or hitting a helmet or yelling. I don't care what decade you played in coaches aren't supposed to nut shot their players.

For 10 yards of slow walking and yelling, he is looking at the kid who got his nuts sent into his throat. He then drills the kid in the nuts, and keeps looking right at him for another second while he yells a couple more things.

No other player is even near the kid that got nailed with the ball.
The kid is doubled over from being hit in the sack and the coach is staring right at him, and only him, while ranting.

I’m sure you are old school… but you’re also an idiot… and that is not just based on this thread but pretty much every post you make.

If you can’t get your point across and teach a kid football without acting like a 3 year old that got told no, then you shouldn’t be coaching.

I see it differently than most guys my age. It's a damn game folks. I have dealt with life and death and watched almost everyone I ever loved lose that battle including my wife and daughter, this ain't that important.

That coach kicked the ball at the kid on purpose. That is clear. The kid goes down from a hit in the stomach/groin area and that coach stared him down all the way to the ground and walked away. The coach had lost his cool. If he can't control his behavior any better than that he does not belong in a school with kids. Back story if true, this ain't his first time to do stupid **** like this either.

This is the kind of guy that is abusive to his wife and children or he defends those that do or finds ways to have plausible deniability that it actually happens. Just as bad is they guys that say, "I will have a talk with him." They have that talk and nothing changes. Actions have consequences and that coach lost his job and should have.

Those saying he shouldn't lose his job were probably treated that way and made it fine or they think they did. Now, they can't even see a kid getting hit in the stomach/groin hard and thinks it's just OK. I will go talk to him...
  1. He is a grown *** man. He can get a job at something he is good at. Teaching children ain't it. Yes, HS coaches are teachers of our children.
  2. How many kids has he mentored over the years that end up thinking its OK to hit someone weaker than them to make them tough? Many of us (including me) have been taught to be just like him and that sucks. Someone taught us to be violent, guys like him. End the cycle, you can instill toughness and hard play without violence. These guys don't know how to do that.
How do I feel about Arnett screaming? Not nearly the same way. College age is not grade school and they are getting paid a lot of money to do a job. That's also the age we send kids to bootcamp to go to real war.

Fired? No. Disciplined? Yes.

If this was my child I would be having some serious discussions with this coach but I don't think it warrants being terminated. My, my, my how soft this country has gotten. Some of you guys couldn't have played sports in the 70's and 80's. You never would've made it thru two a'days.

You wouldn't want an adult fired for hitting your kid in the balls? I call BS on that.

When you played in the 70s and 80s coaches hit players in the nuts? Thats crazy. Me and my friends in the 2000s did two a days and all that but we ran and did up downs or "dying cockroaches" when we screwed up.

Letting people in authority abuse you doesn't make you tough.

Then everyone of them needs firing. You keep excusing that **** and it will keep happening. There are consequences and that is simple assault. He kicked that ball that kid and watched him go down from a hit to the stomach and groin and walked away. 17 him and 17 you for defending such behavior.

Should be promoted.
You have been programmed to defend violent men. I bet you defend an abusive husband, father, cop or whatever and deny it all the time. We all were programmed to think that way as kids. Smart people evolve though and you have not.

Anyone grew up back then were led to think that way and it perpetuates that behavior throughout society. Coaches are teachers and they are teaching these kids it's OK to lose your **** and hit someone. That is messed up.

I bet you have never put your hand in the dirt. Anything and everything is allowed within the cathedral of football if you want to establish a culture of winning. Bad enough they let these kids get water during two-a-days. Do you like winning or not?

I played football in the 80s and got pushed, shoved, and jerked around by coaches in practice all the time.

But in a game against Starkville High, down by 20 at the half, one of the assistant coaches decided to welcome us into the locker room by swatting every players backside with a paddle. He was hitting each of them three or more times. And the guys were just lining up and taking it.

I'd been paddled by the sadistic 17 before in his teacher role and I thought it was bullsh t.

Our team lacked talent and sucked. I was only a 10th grader riding the bench, so when I got up to him I said, 'touch my *** with that paddle and see if you have a job on Monday.' Then a stare down.

He put the paddle away. My practices were hell the next week, but I got to start the last two games of the season. Mostly, because we really did suck.

To the video, a coach shouldn't embarrass a kid like that. He should have apologized right there.

Seems the coach may have a drinking problem or a tough marriage.

Should be reprimanded and written up. Not fired. Of course, the kid's family may think otherwise.

An Onside kick is equally as “dangerous” and you practice against those all the time, really when a coach pushes or shoves a kid with pads and a helmet on, it’s something that happens dozens of times in practice anyway with blocking and tackling whether in drills or live.

When I played LB in HS I got crack back blocked a lot in games and practice but I would have been pissed if my coach randomly did it while I was just standing still at practice
