My understanding is that it's RU's show and that yes, RU arranges for the police coverage for games. But perhaps my understanding is incorrect.

I have to think that there's gonna be someone "policing" the games when there are 25K plus people at any event. If it's not police it's gonna be rent-a-cops.

Yeah man - I'm lining up Jews for the concentration camp tomorrow morning. Just following orders - that's me.

And I'm going to guess you'd be the first guy to sue the University if a drunk 19 year old hit you with a car after the game.

Hey one quick question, someone beats you up walking your dog or steals your car, what do you do?

Maybe call the cops... the "Useless" cops. LOL. Keep up the good fight Mr. BLM.

Oh so now we’re making the stretch that a 19 year old girl drinking with her parents is now drinking and driving. Nice try. And I never said all cops are worthless, just those rent a cops giving out the tickets.

Honestly, what gets me most upset is that the cops that work the RU events, and get paid overtime because of RU, openly bad mouth the football team while their there!

"Hey thanks for the $400. By the way you suck".

We tried, @MrsScrew and I, to socialize the concept of a fan-based steering committee but the athletic department effectively neutered the idea in the implementation. I'll probably talk to a few people in the offseason to see if we can course-correct.
There are some on this Board (and maybe even in the thread ;) ) who know a few things about a few things that would love to help our Alma Mater on such matters.

But as @RU4Real and @MrsScrew have stated the concept has fallen on deaf ears. In one case I know one of those people with said ears have stated, "We know what we're doing."

Yeah? Then why does this type of thread always go to about 5+ pages?

Like on Seinfeld, you might know how to take the reservation but you can't seem to hold the reservation. And isn't that the most important part?

I had a strange encounter leaving. Stayed for a while tailgating in the scarlet lot until traffic thinned. In line to leave police obviously ran my plates. I was driving my wife's car (I was alone). I guess since he didn't see a woman driving pulled me over. Asked for license and registration. Since we have different last names questioned me how I came to be driving this car. When I explained the marriage names commented I needed to get her under my control. I bit my tongue and didn't respond. Unfortunately stop went further as I have a legal Florida license. He made the point that I was driving without a valid license. Not correct as my license expires in 2024. He started questioning me on the why. I gave him a quick overview and politely told him I didn't need discuss my finances on a traffic stop. This really frosted him so we then got into how much I had to drink. I rarely drink (my fellow tailgaters can attest to that) and informed him I had only drank coke zeros. He laughed, said he didn't believe that so I told him to check my cooler. He did and found 2 coke zeros. When we were done he told me he was going to write me a ticket for driving without a license. I politely told him I would fight that ticket in court based on having a valid florida license. At that point he called another cop over who had been standing to the side watching. After they spoke he came back and gave me a verbal warning, and then I moved. 40 minutes wasted. I get it traffic was pretty thin when I left but don't they have better things to do, particularly when his first couple questions are adequately and truthfully answered.
Was it the portly cop at the bottom of the hill with the mustache. I left when a lot of people left. I got to the bottom waiting to turn left onto River road and he was letting 1-2 cars make the left before the light turned red and the traffic kept backing up. If you were stuck trying to leave scarlet or green and had to wait 30 minutes, it was because of this. I wanted to say something but figured it wasn't worth it, when I kept seeing him drop the orange cone on his flashlight at least 3-4 times. My 12 year old asked if there was something wrong with him and I said he probably is just doing the best he can.

That wasn't the one who came to the car. They were sitting at the bottom of the hill heading towards River. I was pulled over just after making right to head to 287.

@RU4Real @e5fdny I would love to hear from people who were on the FAB as to what their suggestions were & how many were actually implemented. The only suggestion I know of that was implemented was adding the B1G flags around the stadium. I am hoping that there are more ....but I honestly don't know of any.
Can we start a new thread/tag some of the people who were on the committee to get some answers?

Once the lots emptied after the game the cops could run every plate passing by them at the bottom of the hill. They probably did and you unfortunately got caught up in the web. Sounds like the cop was looking to get a dwi along the way. Wrong place, wrong time. Glad you were sober. Others are not in that situation. Everyone should be aware in the future.

Fan experience ...different issues

There was also a nice **** show going on in the scarlet lot with a couple of parking attendants

Don't know the details, but One of them went ape sh%t and tried to quit on the job ("I don't need this sh&at) and three others had to contain them

My problem was the remaining staff....who, when i decided that this guy was causing a scene, I went up to another attendant and asked if I should get the police to help

Which the response was....I'm just doing my job (fine with that) and please move your kids (12 and 10) from playing ball and making it harder to get everyone parked (wtf? They were legit throwing the ball 100 feet away in the opposite direction to which cars were being directed to park on a slow day in the scarlet lot)

More nazis there

I was on the first one and as you know worked with Geoff on the Alley.

Some of the game day experiences were implemented. My idea of giving long time fans a PP bump after x amount of years was also implemented.

I think they tried to cut back on the ATV riding through the tailgating scene. The new pre game horse video and bringing it back was part of it but they really need to get rid of the Hunt video , horrible entrance video.

The drum line marching down the road through the yellow and blue lots came out of the committee

Future road improvements to relieve some parking lot congestion after the game are in the works.

Probably a few more that I cannot remember but of course the number one issue of how to get the students back to the stadium is still a failure.

Considering people's tax dollars go to pay for the police, and the police are the only officially sanctioned option for the public to contact when a crime has occurred, your comment isn't exactly the "zinger" you smugly thought it was when you typed LOL.

Are people ever allowed to criticize a bad teacher, or in your mind do they also forfeit their right to do that because they are sending their kids to school?

This probably a discussion for the police department to have with Hobbs offline. Hobbs could give guidance on how the lots should be policed. I think that checking obviously drunk groups of young people for ID is an appropriate threshold. Checking ID's of people with cups walking on roads is probably good too. Letting young people who are not disruptive tailgate in a lot should be tolerated. Underage drinking occurs everywhere obviously and is part of the college experience. If you want the student sections to be empty at home games then continue to aggressively ticket Rutgers students for underage drinking. Sophs and Juniors will just stay on college ave and get drunk in their frats and apartments.

this is good information and I'm happy to know that some of the ideas were implemented and thanks for the PP bump, however,
  • the horse video was only missing last year so I don't know how the first FAB brought it back. I know specifically that the outcry of the fans last year brought it back this year.
  • why did it take 4 years (if you were on the first FAB)to get the band to march between yellow and blue? this season was the first I saw of it
  • what "game day experiences" were implemented?
  • 4 years later and there is still "future road improvements" that need to be developed.

Had a couple MSU people sitting in front of me. They thought the horse video leading into the horse entering the field was pretty cool.

Was the fan advisory board active this year? I've applied every year with no luck getting appointed. Previously years I received notice I wasn't appointed. This year did not hear anything.

There are and should be police at games and in the tailgate lots. Nobody's disputing that, I would hope. The question was, is it RU who reaches out and brings the extra police in for such events? That's my understanding. If so, then RU can reach back out and request that a certain overzealous cop who has numerous complaints about him not be sent to patrol RU events.

From all accounts, it does seem like just the one guy.

We had small group meetings a few times after the first year of the FAB with a small group of us.

Horse video was discussed and how they really need to update and really show off the campuses. I know Ash had it taken off the screen and they were ready for the new one and as you said it came back this year. You should know better then anybody if it is Rutgers everything takes time
Actually the plan was to march the whole band to the Alley area and play there and then march back with the students. Of course that all fell apart
They showed us the plans for the improvement to Fitch road and putting a circle and bus stop. This would have relieved the issue of getting out of the blue lot and the congestion on Scarlet Knight Way. Where they are in the planning, I have no clue.

It really is and it’s also one of those things that makes us, us.

I’ve suggested something similar for Basketball and Wrestling. Maybe not for every game or match but would be cool for some big B1G ones or SHU.

How's my request for free hookers and blow coming? Would definitely improve attendance at games. And if opponents think we're crazy loud now, it'd be pure insanity on third downs.

In NJ, it is legal for minors to consume alcohol under parental supervision at home.

I wonder if a good lawyer could fight this ticket based on the definition of "home". I don’t know the answer. Does home mean only inside a physical house, or does it include the yard? What about an RV? Or the yard of an RV? Or a campsite? Does a tailgate area count as a campsite?

Certainly if the parent were serving a minor in a restaurant or other licensed facility, that would be illegal. But the tailgate lots aren't a licensed facility.

It would be interested to see a good lawyer challenge this case.

RV's are considered a "home" for tax purposes (at least until the mortgage interest deduction is eliminated).

the question is why does RU have such a large police presence? I have been to Michigan, PSU, Arkansas, and Nebraska (twice) and collectively I have not seen as many cops as I do at one game at RU.

Some have said in the past the RUPD (and not Athletics) doesn’t think they have enough to do the job on their own on Gameday.

I can understand that. Which is why other agencies are asked to help out. But what I don’t understand why certain agencies are assigned the tasks they get on Gameday.

I had a conversation yesterday with 2 of the MSCSD cops. One is the ticket writer, who fills his ticket book out before he leaves home except for the name of the drinker, and the other, his partner who doesn't even bring his ticket book. The non ticket writer told me that RUtgers PD told them in their pre meeting that they " need to start writing tickets to justify them being there".
That sounds like bullsheet. Is RUPD getting a cut of the action? If not, what do they care how many tix are written?

There's over 350 cops for maybe 10,000 tailgaters. Plus cameras everywhere. Unless they consider the blue lot a riot situation, they could cover that area with 1/5 the resources

The Rutgers Chief of Police/Public Safety would be in charge and would assign agencies to each need. He is the person who Hobbs need to get with to wall off an area that the County Police are not welcome to patrol.

The season ticket holders need to unionize, so to speak.

The FAB isn't getting it done because it's not the organization that we envisioned.

We should put together an organization comprised of season ticket holders with a representative function charged with ensuring the voices of the core Rutgers fans are heard.

As I'm walking my dog this morning, my neighbor ( both kids are RU GRADS ) relays the story of their tailgate yesterday. They were with another neighbor whose daughter is a RU transfer and sophomore. That families relatives from PA were in as well. Sounds like a nice holiday weekend with friends and family and they decide to take in the RU game. Their RU daughter was there with a few college friends. Two blue lot passes and a nice tailgate.....until the Piscataway cops show up. ( edit- MCSD, not Pway ) The RU sophomore has a red cup of beer, standing next to her mother as the officer shows up and ID's her. She's 19. As the mom tells the officer that she is the mother, the cop then tells her she's the problem, drinking with her underage daughter. Actually wrote the girl 2 tickets. Probably a $1000 day in Pway court.

These are casual fans and students. Exactly what RU wants and needs. Anyone think they'll be back? Anyone think they'll pass on the ****** experience at RU? Anyone think they'll have their younger daughter apply? It was a group of 4 Pway cops. The other 3 walked away. When accosted by the angry father they admitted they wanted no part of it, but the one officer does his own thing.

These folks spent hundreds of dollars on tickets/parking etc.....for our losing team. This is why fans don't show up. This is why the students don't go to the games. This is why RU is wasting the opportunity to create new fans. G-D shame.
couldn't agree more. The cops in the lots are complete scumbags who just go around looking to write tickets and nothing more.

That one idea I bolded from your post sounds incredible !
If they were able to pull off the Alley , and then have the band lead a thousand students down the road. That would be unique and very awesome. Imagine a rowdy group led by a thumping band. Thats intimidating and doesn't exist anywhere else. Of course the major issue with that is ..1) the alley doesn't exist and 2) good luck getting even a hundred students to leave a tailgate for even 20 minutes, three hours before kickoff

So now it's gotten to the point where the bozo-in-question's own partners-in-uniform are trying to run interference for his overzealous ID-checking and ticket-writing. You can't make this crap up if you tried, except at Rutgers.

One of the thoughts on that is the RUPD is around the students and Rutgers community all week and maybe they don’t want to be “bad cop” on the weekends too. The old don’t poop where you work thing.

Which if you think about it, @RUsSKii that could be the case too.
