Not surprised. CT is gamer and throws it well but he doesn't run it well enough for the new system IMO. I wish him luck.

Torres could still decide to stay as well correct? Or did he sign somewhere already?

CT deserves a lot of accolades… he was a bright spot in an extremely crap year who was a gamer that not only dealt with all the drama BS but who put everything he had out there for the university! I wish that kid nothing but the best! I hope he get what he wants and has a great season somewhere (so long as it’s not against DONU)

Smothers will likely stay, I don't think he's going to get any other offers in the portal.
Smothers will get D1 offers. It’s just a matter of who it is and what the Financial package is. NU’s cost of attendance deal alone is pretty good. CT leaving frees up a lot of NIL resources.

So what Power 5 program does he think he will be able to start at next year? What program does not have a clear starter right now after spring ball?

Maybe Auburn, as they are kind of a mess right now at QB, but I can't think of many other programs that really need a QB for next year right now. Oklahoma State could be another one, I guess. It would be funny if he went there, then he could say he played for all of the rivals of his Dad's former team.

Does he need to sit a year, since he already has been through the transfer portal? Maybe I missed the answer in this thread somewhere.

Really like CT. He sure can sling it, but who knows where he’ll be after surgery. Don’t blame him at all. I think Sims was gonna be tough to beat. Hope the very best for him.

I thought the portal might decimate the RB room depth (and it still may) but I didn't expect last year's QB starter to leave and the QB room shrink so fast. We're now back to one injury away from big problems.
He had a tight window. He needs to join a team right away and get going with their summer camp.

This is awful news IMO. This was the key to some form of consistency between staffs, and having some great offensive production. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see us taking the next step with Simms. I wasn’t impressed at GT, and the B1G is going to put a lot better defenses on the field.

Let the musical QB chairs begin. Casey will start at a P5 program next season and it’s likely he already knows which one. Now we seriously need a capable backup. Unless the current backups can be coached a million times better than last year, the room just went from pretty good to horrifying.

perhaps to those who are clueless when it comes to evaluating football players

I find these times to be quite exciting - opportunity abounds & Coach Rhule is creating the roster/team he wants

You’re right, it is likely they bring in another guy to be #2. Someone of their choosing.

FWIW:

smothers, 4* out of HS --> 3* in the portal
torres, 3* out of HS --> 0* in the portal

as someone said, the jury is out on Thompson's health this fall

this shakeup was long overdue in the QB room. we will be just fine

Not participating in the spring then posting video of him throwing bombs when the portal opened maybe should have been our sign….

There was a lot to like about CT. I really thought he would be a little more loyal and competitive. Maybe his rehab isn't going well.
Back in the day a fifth stringer would compete and improve himself to attain further heights. Now, first stringers, with even the slightest hint at competition bail.
College football has been ruined by this.

I liked CT. I hate this constant shuffle of players. How do you root for someone who has zero loyalty beyond today's game? But I do trust in Rhule. He seems to know how to adapt to today's changing game.

our current backup is a throwback to these times so sorely missed by so many

local stock, too

you'd think he'd be about as easy a player to root for as has ever donned the Scarlet & Cream

but, alas.........

Well ****. I'm thinking we all need to reevaluate how Rhules first season is going to go now.

Without a competent backup to Sims (which we currently have ZERO now), loss of Wynn, thin/young depth on the lines, year 1 might be tougher than originally thought. More like his previous stops... Unfortunately.

Maybe not to the degree of having only 1-2 wins, but I see us struggling to get to 6 for a bowl game now. Unless Sims stays healthy, which just seems so unlikely as we all know how that's gone for our mobile qbs over the past decade.

I'm still all N on Rhule no doubt! But I won't hold it against him if year 1 sucks. We better prepare for youth movement kind of deal, which inevitably comes with growing pains.

Here's to looking forward to years 2 & 3... 🍻

If we simplify the offense to primarily running, read option, and triple option, then sure. Maybe we can find some success still behind HH and Purdy as backups. I wonder if Rhule will make such an adjustment though, should they find Sims going down at any point this season?
