Johnny didn't leave like report said about covid 19 , he was tried of one of the assistant coach's ...Cal better get a hold on this. He really doesn't have anyone really helping him like Payne did .
Don't worry you wanted four-year guys and now you've got them. I heard that crap all year. Every one of the morons that posted that to us needs to admit that you don't know what the hell you're talking about.Askew
Fletcher
Boston
Clarke
Jackson
We've lost 5/6th of our freshmen from a team that went 9-16.
Think about that and tell me things have changed.
Remember when some of you said we would need a horrific season to experience player retention?
Well, we just had that season. How's the "retention theory" working out?
Player development? There is always that one.So how can we spin this to make it Cal's fault when all year people were complaining about how Askew got too many minutes?
We still don’t know if Cal told him he wasn’t working.I agree that some posters are overboard with their distaste for Cal. I also agree that some posters don't think Cal has ever done anything wrong while at UK whether it's in-game coaching, personnel decisions, player rotations, etc. The truth is somewhere in the middle.
I respect that Askew seemed to try/work very hard this past year. He seems like a good kid and I hope he goes on to do well (I won't go so far as 'once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat', though). Cal counted on him to grow up quickly this past year and it just didn't happen. Part of that is on Cal - he expected too much too soon from Askew. Perhaps because he had no other options, he continued to play Askew significant minutes until it became painfully obvious that he just wasn't up to the task (yet, perhaps). I'm willing to cut Cal some slack with Askew's handling except I thought he stayed with him too long rather than finding another option.
If DA truly feels like his PT will be cut this upcoming year then I don't blame him for moving on. Again, good luck to him. But, Cal has to take some responsibility and heat for having to rely on DA as much as he did this past year. Any reasonable person can see that he did a piss-poor job in building this team and his reliance on DA was only one of the shortcomings due to poor design of the roster that was completely obvious after only a few games. Once again, we had a dearth of backcourt quickness, a lack of 3-point shooting, poor basketball IQ, too many players who were similarly sized, athletically gifted and athletically lacking. That's on Call 100%. If his first choice (or first two choices) for OAD PG didn't come on board, he should've had a 3rd and 4th choice. It felt all along that Cal/UK 'settled' on Askew, regardless of what his HS ranking was. Did Cal accurately evaluate DA and put him in a position to succeed? I don't see how any Cal apologist could come to that conclusion.
With Mintz' decision still up in the air and several transfers committed elsewhere, what is Cal's strategy for not repeating the same roster design mistakes he obviously made this year? If Mintz decides to leave and one of the remaining top targets don't come on board, are we in a similar situation as this year's team? It just seems like the most recent years, the roster has felt like it's a haphazard, last-minute concoction rather than the culmination of a very structured plan. And, for the money Cal is making, there is no excuse for UKBB to ever seem haphazard.
They will still need time to gelCollege basketball is a free market now, and therefore there is little need for players to stay at a school for 3 to 4 years
We will have our oldest back court next year and not a single one of them will have played more than 2 years at UK
We will get a transfer PG and Hickman will be the back up, so there would have been no time for Askew,
This transfer makes complete sense
Win win for UK and Askew
I sure hope so. Presently only 2 guards on the expected roster: (1) Hickman - who I think is a great PG recruit, but I also believe whole-heartedly that it's in his best interest and UK's if he is the backup and sophomore starting PG in training; and (2) Grady - a very good 2G that I'm very happy with. But, UK needs a minimum of 2 more guards, and I think really needs 3 or even 4 more guards in total. I think Askew would have been a nice bench piece next year at both guard spots.Soooo this means Mintz and someone else is coming in?!
Hopefully it means Cal is making actual changes to how he coaches the team. Obviously we wont really know til we see the team play though. So, is losing nearly everyone off a 9-16 team a good thing or bad thing?
Is he not being recruited over which is why most leave?right and the idiots blaming cal for this should have their head examined
I'm sure it's the fans fault and not that Cal is recruiting over him lol.Who could blame him after all the hate a few so called fans slung at him.
Cal may have turned UK into a farm system for UCLA and other west coast teams.Hopefully Cal stops recruiting west coast kids, unless they’re a for sure one and done.
I know what you're going through, I had to put my red siberian husky down on her 17th birthday back in 2008, it took years for me to get over that. I definitely wasn't myself for a long time.I haven't posted in a few weeks because of the loss of my dog, my boy, Vin. I just haven't felt myself and definitely didn't want any confrontation that this board can bring sometimes while grieving. But reading this kind of brought me back out of my shell. It pisses me off! I supported this kid all year when most didn't and I did that because he talked about how proud he was to wear the blue and white and that he was going to stick with it through the process. What a F-ing joke! Look at a guy like Quickly just the year before. I'm not saying there is any comparison between the two, but he didn't do all that much as a Freshman, but stayed the course and came back in a crowded backcourt and became the SEC POY. Good things can happen if you just put in the work and give it a chance.
I guess I'm officially getting old, but these kids today are all about instant gratification. It's starting to feel like participation trophies, cellphones, and social media is producing a very weak generation. Wow, I felt old saying that, but it is clearly true. When I played you rubbed dirt on it, taped up whatever popped and played no matter what until they had to carry you off the field. You stayed the course and paid your dues no matter how good you were. It seems like things are only going to get worse. Gone are the glory days of college BB, man they were amazing though.
West coast kids are soft and belong out there. Don't get me wrong Askew played hard and hustled, but the first sign of adversity and he backtracks everything he said and bolts. I know a lot on this board are pissed at Cal and I do think there are things that need to be fixed, but this kid got the PT and it still didn't work. I think the reclass experiment is over. This transfer crap isn't just UK, hell Ole Roy just retired because of it. I did like his goodbye speech where he talked about these kids just quitting and stop calling it anything else.
The transfer is the way of the future. Watching the FF it was like look UCLA Juzang (UK), HOU Grimes (KU), Zags Nembard (FL), and Baylor Mitchell (AUB). It's time to embrace the free-agent market of the transfer.
Cal only wants to play 7. That’s why guys leave when recruited over. If you’re not in the top 7 you’ll only get in when there’s foul trouble/injuryI'm just telling you that's what he is..
Askew can either sit on the bench and MAYBE be a starter as a Junior (but knock knock, who's there, Skyy Clarke), or he can freely transfer with the new rule and likely be a starter for a mid-major or a program that's desperate for PG play.
And honestly.. if say Sarr were to come back, you might see Toppin change his mind. Or if Brooks comes back for sure, you might see Allen transfer.
You're not going to fill your 9th, 10th and 11th roster spots with 5-star players.. not with the transfer rule the way it is.
Lol not even on the same universe as Tyler. He may have got there but noTaller Ulis, gone. Damn!
Neither does Cal at this point. He seemed like a good young man and I wish him the best but honestly he never seemed UK material.
Disagree on everything here. This is a glimmer of Cal showing that he's putting winning above changing a player's life.So I guess the same posters that have done nothing but trash the kid, will now use this to trash Cal.
He would have been a decent PG with some development and time. He is what a NORMAL multi-year player looks like. He was multi-year player some of you claim you want.
Hopefully Cal stops recruiting west coast kids, unless they’re a for sure one and done.
Askew was a good kid BUT he will never have the attributes an elite program desires. It's extremely difficult to improve explosiveness and lateral quickness. He got away with it in high school due to his size but college at this level is a different animal. He'll probably go somewhere like USC, Cal, Oregon St, or Arizona St.Watch he will transfer to UCLA or Gonzaga.
Disagree on everything here. This is a glimmer of Cal showing that he's putting winning above changing a player's life.
Nothing about Askew says he'll be a decent PG, especially at the level our program deserves. He does not have PG instincts. He is slooooooooow. Has very little lift. His jump shot is from the 40's.
I'd rather Cal roll the dice on a super athlete learning the game over three years like WCS than whatever it was we witnessed this last season at the PG spot.
I'll take that bet. He ain't scoring buckets unless it's DII or the YMCA.And score a ton of buckets in the NCAA tournament.
OkPicking driving over shooting and efficiency ............. reasons why cal will never win another title here.
I think you said that before.Picking driving over shooting and efficiency ............. reasons why cal will never win another title here.
it’s called competition,do you not want the best players on the floor? Is he not being recruited over which is why most leave?
A mediocre coach that is in the Hall of Fame. I think the experts disagree with you. What are you in the Hall of Fame for? Maybe posting negative comments on this board?I bash Cal for the simple reason that he is a mediocre coach!
I agree. Askew's replacement will take us to a top 10.Way to go Cal!
Hopefully the PG from Minnesota, Marcus CarrSoooo this means Mintz and someone else is coming in?!
Right, who wants the Mintzs, Reids, Mayes, of the worldgood luck . Not talented enough unless surrounded with better talent than what Cal is getting ..maybe he can succeed somewhere else , it isnt here .. but maybe EKU Western, Belmont or Eastern Idaho has some hotshot 6th year 25 year old that shoots 36 % from three .. but he was ALL CONFERENCE !!!! barf .
Sure he only plays 7. Where have you been lately?Cal only wants to play 7. That’s why guys leave when recruited over. If you’re not in the top 7 you’ll only get in when there’s foul trouble/injury
You don't remember 2015, he played 7 that year and 4 moreSure he only plays 7. Where have you been lately?
Not in a one and done model. I want guys recruited who have potential to be junior/senior stars and I don’t want them recruited over. Add no more than 1 super stud who will stay for just a year.it’s called competition,do you not want the best players on the floor?
It’s not over yet. Who would be surprised to hear that others are transferring?Don't worry you wanted four-year guys and now you've got them. I heard that crap all year. Every one of the morons that posted that to us needs to admit that you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
I knew it was laughable then and it's laughable now. Retaining one true freshman.
I’d say Cal’s recommendation is right. Cal is sleazy and does push kids out the door. Then turns around and brags how he changes their lives.Devin Askew came to Kentucky in over his head, but played his *** off to compensate. He has heart and mental toughness. I assume he is transferring with Cal’s blessing, maybe even Cal’s recommendation, because he got recruited over, and if so, I have no problem with that. I wish him success.
College basketball is a hot mess, though.
How many Suggs are out there. Only one in my opinion. Not in a one and done model. I want guys recruited who have potential to be junior/senior stars and I don’t want them recruited over. Add no more than 1 super stud who will stay for just a year.
Like Suggs this year at Gonzaga. It’s a pipe dream that you’re going to take new 5 stars every year and they’re going to be the best players for 1 year
gonzaga was good but lets not compare a team that played in a ****** conferenceNot in a one and done model. I want guys recruited who have potential to be junior/senior stars and I don’t want them recruited over. Add no more than 1 super stud who will stay for just a year.
