And they will be the exact same posters who crushed Cal for playing the kid. Kids transfer, it is what it is.

And ex Duke player will be playing in the title game tonight. Only the Cal bashers blame him for guys like Juzang.
I think we're in a whole new world that a lot of us don't realize exist. You're really going to need a program to know who's on a team that you don't follow closely. Before criticizing everybody why don't you give us time to adjust to this new reality.

Askew seemed like a great kid - well spoken - wish him nothing but the very best. Not his fault to be overplayed - coaching staff fault. Wish his camp would have just said nothing - because some will hold this against him.

Program-wise - likely someone "better" is known to be coming which many will accept and move forward.... fine. But this roster building strategy is a dumpster fire and feels like a middle school dance - you run after the hottest girl who walks in the room only to leave her as soon as someone hotter walks in the room - all night long - and usually leave with no one... Unsustainable and man are we reaping that now.

Blame Cal? Kids have lots of options this year and can play immediately - but... he is the coach, right? Buck has to stop somewhere with the program/culture.

Are you saying this is Mitch and Cals plan to sell more programs and generate more revenue? Maybe grab a soft serve on the way

When people stop trying to bash Cal, for so many contrived reasons, and players like Askew, then I'll worry about criticizing them for the obvious. Transfers happen all over and some turn out to be really good, it's been that for a while and the rules changes will only add to that. How does it take to understand that simple concept?

I’ve been and will continue to support Cal but this system is broken. It’s not just broken for us but it’s impossible to recruit kids that are 5 stars and expect them to then be ok with coming back for a sophomore year. In their minds they weren’t good enough to do it and the response 90% of the time is transfer out. Sad.
I agree. I think bringing in 2nd tier 5* kids is an extremely bad idea and honestly, I don't think Askew really was a 5* kid. He doesn't have crazy athletesism or elite size, he has an average build and average quickness.
But any 5* kid that is outside the top 5, is usually a project and since you only have them for 1 year, it makes no sense to bring them in and make them key players.
I hate that Askew is transferring, but I unserstand why he made this decision. He was always going to be playing behind more athletic point guards.

Oh if you're talking about bashing cal I have no problem bashing a guy that was 9 and 16 and got paid nine million dollars. Why is that so hard for you to understand numb nuts?

The fact that your hero thinks that he can overturn an entire team every year and come back and compete for the national championship is a bit of a problem. Do you understand that or are you just completely stupid?

Saw a tweet that said UL, Tennessee, Duke were the top 3. Probably just someone throwing ish at the wall to see if it sticks but any of those 3 would be a slap.
None of those would want him honestly. All three depend heavily on guards who can score. He needs to go play in a system that will hide his lack of athleticism.

Really hope he finds a place made for him.

This is how big business operates at this level and anyone who thinks Cal is in the wrong here--he gave the guy an entire year to show he could improve and he was still the same and copped an attitude more than a few times that would've been bench worthy if you had other options.

Was just a horrible season all around and wish the guy luck wherever he ends up. I won't be surprised to see a change of course regarding Brooks next.

I was trying to think positively with Askew returning, thinking that it was a positive and showed character that he wanted to stick it out. But now that he’s no longer a Wildcat, I can honestly say I didn’t feel great at all about him returning because Cal would feel like he owes him playing time. This is for the best for Askew and for UK. Good luck to him, but I don’t think he’ll amount to much.
Harsh but very honest and I agree. Plus not being up to the task is way too much pressure for young kid like him. He couldn't reach into his bag and make himself a better athlete. Bad situation for him this last season. It's hard to be a fan in your 40's and know you are quicker than one of the players on the floor. Should never happen.

My only issue here is.. how the hell can Cal or any coach win here? We've talked for years about players leaving due to playing time. Askew gets all the time he can get and ample opportunity.

Guys get home sick, guys aren't playing the position they want, guys want more minutes and now guys want.. less minutes?

The only thing Cal did wrong here was seemingly recruit over him for next year. Everything else, he did right by Askew.. which proved detrimental to the program. Cal gave Askew a ton of wiggle room that most coaches wouldn't.. and while we as fans can be mad about that (as we are), Askew should be praising Cal.

You think Brooks goes? He seems like a guy who does his own thing. He'll get plenty of PT if he comes back.

for those wanting Carr ,

Carr, 31% 3pt shooter this past season. No thanks. Not a good FG % overall meaning his 19ppg came from taking a lot of shots and not efficient enough for greatness we need at PG

Agree. I would add that I think had Cal played Mintz at PG from the start and used Askew to give relief minutes and some at the SG Askew doesn't look so overwhelmed and out of place. jmo.

Agree - not his fault in that Cal had a poorly constructed roster - refused til too late to move mintz to point and otherwise had no other point. Clarke/Boston? Both VERY turn-over prone... off dribble or passing the ball. Cal left himself with no options - but yes Askew given a ton of time, leash and support.

Carr can drive the lane and dish to others where Askew had a hard time with that part of the game. He is also a good defensive player. Carr will be a huge upgrade from Askew

He got out on the road but drove at only 35 mph in a 55 mph speed limit.
I LOL'd at that. Very true. Was tough to watch. It's like when you go to the go-kart track and get stuck with the slow one. No matter how good a line you take even the dumb little kids are going to pass you.

I think he does and no idea--all is quiet which I usually take as a good thing. Look at Grady just announcing out of nowhere.

But I view the '21 team like a horrible relationship with a beautiful girl who is a terrible fit for you. You keep looking at her other suitors and who she choose you over, and you think she's so hot you want to invest everything into keeping it together despite the fact you have nothing in common, all facets of the relationship are underwhelming (keeping it PG for the kiddies) so why pretend that more time will change/help it? Move on and let them claim they dumped you--as long as you are rid of them, who gives a ****?

Ruthless Cal showing some teeth with today's announcement and about damn time.

So, is losing nearly everyone off a 9-16 team a good thing or bad thing?
Just going to be brutally honest in this response. Losing Sarr is a good thing. Just could not finish in the post and that was where Cal was going to play him so he is better off leaving.
Boston and Clarke is a little different. Both came here with leaving on their mind. Neither did anything note worthy but another year or two at UK with them having the right mind set probably unlocks their skills and abilities. But I think them leaving is addition by subtraction only because of their seemingly "me first" mind set. One had a Documentary crew with him and the other kind of opted out without opting out.
Mintz should definitely return. His shooting teamed with a good PG could be lethal. Brooks should also return. The minutes are there for the taking if he puts in the work and skill improvement he needs.
Toppin and Ware coming back is als a good thing. Toppin has umlimited potential imo. Just needs some experience and fine tuning of his ball handling and jump shooting. His midrange is prety good. Ware needs aboiut 20lbs and some low post moves. Plays really hard though.
Jackson should return imo, but it's looking more and more that he won't.
So, in short, most should return and it's a good thing, 3-4 leaving is a good thing.

Agreed. Would like to see the Cal from UMass who would do anything to win.

I don’t like it - I see nothing about him that says NBA, but if he became a Junior/Senior valuable role player here he’d be incredibly popular. That being said this last season may have soured that, or at least made it seem a looooong ways away.

may be best to go somewhere that he can play the most minutes. I wish him all the success in the world, wherever that is. And I hope he cracks the NBA somehow too.

Askew was just not ready to run a Blood Blood program like UK. He was in over his head. He would have been better off staying in HS another year. I am not in favor of kids coming out early for Collage. It is my opinion that Cal has gotten word from someone in the Transfer portal that he has his PG for next year.

This sucks. He'll probably be a much improved player next year, was just not put in a position to succeed this year imo.

Picking driving over shooting and efficiency ............. reasons why cal will never win another title here.
