He’s weak, passive, and can’t score. Nice kid but he looks worse than Skal.

EJ just needs to have to WANT it more than anybody else on the floor, and that is on him. If he has no desire to get better, then that is also on him. I see plenty of potential in EJ, only he can be the best he can be. If he refuses to have enough heart to rebound and play defense, this is all we will get from him.

I didn’t write him off, right now, he’s a liability. Do you disagree, if so why?
Guys remember Terrance Jones? I feel like this thing with EJ is going to turn out just like that.

If you remember Terrance had all the athletic abililty to be dominant around the basket and Cal kept trying to polish him up but he never really developed a comfortable low post game. Used to catch the ball on the left block and turn over his right shoulder every time, most of the time turning himself behind the basket with no angle to use the board and finish. EJ show the same tendencies, just not comfortable with a feel of how to score down there.

So at the end of the Terrance final year Cal just told him to stop worrying about posting and just be the physical beast that you are and go get eveything at the rim. Every rebound, every put back, every lob finish. And Terrance finally showed enought to get drafted just doing that.

I think that is exactly what Cal is going to have to do with EJ. He actually starting showing signd of this at the end of the season but his a three or two and now wants to expand his game. Not sure that is in the cards for him, just be a board banging beast.

Terrance Jones was killing teams in Hawai his first year and then scored 35 pts later that year to set a Fr scoring record. EJ Montgomery has never shown nothing similar to scoring prowess, ball handling and even TJones body was way stronger than EJ.

I think it's easier on fans to get over this "EJ has so much talent" stuff that has been commented upon since last year. I think EJ will have good (but not great games) and he'll also have a fair share of games he won't show up and be a decent but power forward in college and moreso like Sacha Killeya Jones than Terrance Jones. I just don't see an elite skill set and while 2 games into the season is not much....he's been very much like the kid that had all kinds of chances to shine when PJ/Reid went down and simply couldn't make it happen.

Liability is not the right word.

He is what he is and doesn't project to ever be more than incrementally better to me. Certainly I’m not a skilled talent evaluator but we’ve all seen guys who reached their zenith in HS and never significantly improved. He seems that type to me. Guess we’ll see.

EJ just had some nerves.. Ive had that putting and shooting free throws at my very low competition level.. he is on a big stage surrounded by world class athletes. After a year as a role player he is emerging as a potential starter and the stress and weight of being a core guy brings some nerves. Also if he is stronger.. touch needs to adjust. Only guessing but he is feeling the weight of the opportunity given to him. I think that he will step up to his role as 5th option and space eater rebounder etc. If not.. dunk the ball . a couple of nice jams will get him going.

That’s what I loved about Jamal Magloire was his attitude. He may not have been the most talented but he had a mean streak about him. EJ just plays to nice and he needs to play pissed off Magloire style

You're exactly right, EJ needs to play so hard that CAL has to start and play him. If not, Cal will slowly take the important minutes away so his future is in his hands.

Magloire loved the physical play, EJ runs away from it, therein lies the problem. When you are 6'11" with hops, you simply have to play down low, to rebound, block shots and baby hooks. The team does not need him roaming around the perimeter, because he does not help the team out there. We are very thin down low, so we need EJ down there in the worst way.

The overwhelming majority of posts said IF, IF he doesn’t show more...
Your post epitomezes the RR posters that turn any critical analysis into hyperboles and strawman arguments.

I was referencing the thread title which says verbatim Montgomery IS A LIABILITY. I’m not calling out those saying he has to improve- I am in that group, too. But a thread title like that is a massive knee jerk overreaction to one exhibition game, IMO.

Seems like you're backtracking to me.

Not in the least. Same message I’ve had all through the thread. We got so called fans taking a big hairy all over EJ. The key issues are team related. Just like last year. Not one single kid on that team can solve them. The execution has to get better. Crapping all over one kid just shows abundant stupidity.

Looks worse than Skal? That’s not an insult. Skal is playing in the NBA in his 4th year with a career average of 8 pts 4 rebs. You obviously never played the game beyond church league. Step aside and leave the basketball talk to those of us who know what we’re talking about.

What I don't get is why someone else's opinions about a BASKETBALL GAME, is so offensive to some. People can be emotional, they live and die with every shot made, they have certain expectations of certain players. Why not just let them be? There is common ground for everyone.

Here’s where you expose yourself. You apparently don’t have a team that you cheer for. If that were so, you would understand the passion people have for their team and how they wil go to great lengths to defend that team and its players. True, passionate fans get defensive about their team and players. You on the other hand, are simply here to troll. Nothing more nothin less. Take a hike.

Most of us have an idea what’s going on. We don’t make judgements on one scrimmage. The sad part is EJ actually had a pretty good first half but nobody saw it because of the girls soccer game overrun.

But you said that I probably didn’t play past a church league, so clearly I must be talking to John Wall, so why are you on this message board Mr. Professional?
