Montgomery is a liability

EJ wasn't as bad as people are making him out to be. He missed close shots that he shouldn't have...but so did a lot of our bigs that came and played for us...yes including KAT, Noel, Bam, ...and everyone not named Boogie and Davis.

He made some passes i liked, but we didn't convert because they missed the shot. (2 assists, and should have had 2 more)

In general, the biggest glaring issue was our offense or defense when Quickley / Hagans wasn't in the game. Our rotation will get tighter and positioning will get better. I actually do like this team. (then again, i usually like most of the team we have had).

I guess it's my own fault for putting such lofty expectations onto EJ's development. I thought we would see a PJ like improvement from last season to this one. After watching the Blue/White game and this one, EJ still has a long way to go before he is ready to be a main contributor for this team.

Mich St. is VERY physical, so EJ has to toughen up in a hurry, especially with Nick being questionable with the ankle injury.

It's early and I have high hopes on him, but today made me worry a little more. He couldn't buy chippies. Floats outside too much and just seems like the same EJ from last year. I sure hope I'm wrong and he steps up, but I think it is very safe to say it isn't going to be a PJ like step up. We just need him to be competent and strong, decisive with the ball inside.

I don’t think EJ misses those shots that close to the bucket in a month. I see it as a fluke and feel he is too talented to miss bunnies consistently. First game folks, first game.

Preseason means absolutely nothing in any sport did anyone get hurt ? If not Then that's a good preseason game. Richards turned his ankle in a meaningless game so this wasn't a great game for that reason

Funny thread that epitomizes why UK fans get a bad rap. I think there are plenty of other elite programs who would love to have EJ Montgomery on their roster. Declaring him as a liability after one exhibition game is jumping the gun, to say the least.

Oh god, stop with this...that UK fans are the only ones that do this. Every fan base, big and small, college or pro, do this.

Georgetown out rebounded UK. Rebounding is effort and heart.

EJ does nothing to stand out in this game. Missed about four 2 footers. I don't think he wants to play on the block.
Unreal that Mighty UK was out rebounded in Rupp by an NAIA team.
Obviously that dont happen if Nick doesn't get injured but still...

I'm not going to panic and write EJ off , we need him in a big way . Its just a little disappointing that he doesn't excel against smaller Naia competition .
The biggest thing for me was that he made no noticeable impact on the game on either end. I mean, everything is on his side. I just wanna see him make an impact. Be a bully in some way. Either by rebounding, scoring, blocking shots or something.

Have some area of the game where teams have to account for you. Right now, that's not the case.

It is true that to get to the promised land will take EJ being a top.talent. But, no matter the various comments it is hard to debate his performance tonight was not a big disappointment.

I’ll tell you this, we play that game against MSU, we’re looking at another 118 - 84

I'm not expecting us to win.

Our team is young and won't look great in the first official game. Not a fan of having championship classic as our first game. It's just bad idea for UK in the current system.

But at the same time, the team that lost 118-84 was pretty damn good until small injures killed us at the end of the season. They still made it to elite eight. So i am not concerned.

Also, my reference is about open shots. No matter how good the team you playing against is, you still get open shots.

Some of you obviously never played the game. EJ played a pretty damn good first half. Drained a 3, rebounded and defended well with a nice block. A liability??? [laughing]

You get many fewer, the pressure on the ball is immensely higher (Georgetown brought none), the duration for the open shot is much less, conversion on the boards is much faster and more efficient . . . . shall I go on? Yes, you get open shots but if you think there will be near as many, I have to ask again. First game?

The loss against Duke did a lot of damage. Yes, we recovered amazingly well. That said, we had a lot of posters that dumped on that young ball club last year because of the fools gold in the Bahamas. Today was fools gold. We are NOT a good basketball TEAM. Posters all wrapped up in individual performances. They are irrelevant. Our TEAM must improve.

He’s weak, passive, and can’t score. Nice kid but he looks worse than Skal.
Hmmm. I have not given up on him yet. The season hasn't started. What do you think about Whitney? If you have quit on him too, you have a very limited bench. Its who we have and I am sticking with both of them. At least until I can get a bigger sample size than one preseason exhibition game.

How many teams are truly good teams the first exhibition of the year?? “Our team must improve”. No duh!! Everyone’s team must improve and guess what... the Cats always improve.

It was the first game of the year, a scrimmage. Sure we must improve. What team doesn’t at this juncture?

Correct. My goal is to point out that the problem is not with individuals. These are team skills. Things that are very poorly taught in the AAU. Things you never see in those stupid recruiting videos. Things that Cal does teach exceedingly well. People have talked about EJ like a dog today. He is the least of what happened today. Shortcomings in the guard play contributed to much of what went wrong with him. These things will improve. Unfair to bash one player when they have a great deal of work to do.

In our offense should EJ have the green light to take threes ? ( IMO no ) He shouldn't be catching the ball in that position with all the perimeter players we already have
I think EJ should work from the free throw stripe down, he can hit that fifteen foot jumper , but as far as the way he try's to finish its just to soft

I’m by no means a sunshine pumper, but come on. One freaking exhibition game. At least wait until after the MSU game to dump on one of the players.

I'm convinced that a lot of our posters use this board to diffuse the stress they have on a daily basis. People, People, People this was a scrimmage. No one died, game doesn't count, and first time all these kids played on the same team. I'd love to read the game thread's from the last few years after our first scrimmage. I'd bet it's not that different from this thread. Cal's doing what he always does with these new kids. He's teaching them and you will see improvement as the season progresses. If you expecting this team to look great this early in the season, you're in for a big disappointment.

Not sure he is a liability, but you would think the coaches would work on that jump hook, he pushed the ball at the rim instead of flipping his wrist and shooting the ball with touch.

It’s like the beginning of every season UK gets out rebounded until they figure it out. My theory is to many players leaking out trying to get their points instead of putting a body on someone and fighting for the ball. Everyone knows rebounding is effort and heart, while double digit rebounds stat isn’t as pretty as say twenty points.

Which is crazy because if you ask any coach, everyone would say they’d take those double digit rebounds over the 20 points
