How many times has Rutgers landed its first choice recruits in the last six years? It almost never happens. And then you see the same recruit succeed elsewhere. The problem isn’t the evaluation, it’s that we don’t offer enough to land the first priorities on our board. What exactly is our value proposition ?
  • Crappy Campus
  • Crappy Facilities
  • Crappy NIL
  • Crappy Stadium Environment

Our only competitive advantage is our location. Academically, every school in the Big Ten is a good school, with a possible exception.

Yet most of you bozos expect the best recruits to sign up for this 💩. It’s complete lunacy. The best recruits are going elsewhere because they’re getting bigger bags, better facilities, better stadium environment, and overall a better experience.

  • The best recruits we can get, are coming because Schiano sold them.

  • we have to be honest as to where we stand, and we’re low man on the totem pole, because we don’t offer enough. We have to overpay to get good recruits in here.

This is why we didn’t have enough NIL, to land the caliber of recruit, in the portal, to turn this situation around. Look at Wisconsin, who spent $9M more than we did. Look at their caliber of transfer, then look at ours. Even in spite of our financial challenges, we did land some talent. Clay Thevinin and Rondo Porter can ball. The issue is with everyone else. You take the big risks that we did, and you’re not going to land many hits. To get more hits, we have to pay up for better risks. We need more Tier 1 transfers in our transfer class, like what Northwestern and Wisconsin have. Can only do that with more NIL.

Schiano ended his fundraising activities once Kelli came on board, and that was likely a mistake. It took time for Kelli to get the proper resources in place, so that our fundraising could operate with maximum efficiency. The results last year weren’t great, which put us at a big disadvantage in the portal. Despite our constraints, we still landed Rondo Porter and Clay Thevinin. Everyone else isn’t having the impact we hoped for. Next year, with more money, we’ll get better results. The best coach for the job, is the current one.

Obviously any coach could do better with more NIL resources. Just look at Mario down in Miami. Before NIL, no one considered him some great coach, but now with top NIL he now has the number one team, for now. But what you don't seem to understand, is that, as a practical matter, Rutgers is unlikely to improve its' relative position with regard to NIL, at least not much over the long term. Zinn can grab some low hanging fruit, after Hobbs who did absolutely nothing, but after that you are who you are, and you need a coaching staff who can be competitive with the available resources. Separate question as to whether the current staff are maximizing the potential of the available resources. I don't think so. Sure, one of the Rutgers billionaires could magically get involved, but I wouldn't bet on it.

THERE WILL NEVER BE MORE NIL SUPPORT

You're blind assumption "Schiano is the best possible viable ccoach" impacts every thread or post you make.

Because you refuse to even consider that there could be a better viable coach, the ONLY thing you fall back on is "the only way to improve is more money".

There will never be more money.

So after all that how do explain coaches who have the same NIL problem still finding ways to win? Even when you look back to Schiano 1.0 he was on top of the world and had top 10 recruiting classes before he left and still couldn’t win big games. He still lost to the Cincinnati’s and UCONNs. He couldn’t even win in Tampa with a professional payroll. Even his successor with all that talent left behind still couldn’t win more 6 games . Of course NIL wins some games and makes any coach look good but good coaching makes NIL into a championship team. Schiano has not been able to win as at HC at any level and has admitted it himself after every loss saying he didn’t coach well enough He’s telling us straight out that he’s failing week after week You’re just not listening.

So much $$$ are off the books. NIL is only one part of the pool of $$$. A program such as Ohio State is often referenced as having made an NIL investment of $50 million for the current roster, but that's a guess based on assembling various totals from a range of sources tied directly to the university. It does not account for monies "contributed" from other external sources, benefiting the program via roster and staff acquisition and retention. Ohio State's football program is likely benefiting in the neighborhood of $120+ million for its annual personnel budget. And that doesn't factor in facilities, the quality of which further attracts talent. It's a new landscape, for sure. The big programs will continue to rule the roost.

This is what Schiano having more NIL money has produced. More losses. To schools like UMass and BC who have far less NIL

He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He gave Elad $550k lol

The facts are this. In true Schiano fashion the more money he gets the more he loses. Hes a terrible football coach and even worse GM

Is Rutgers trying to compete with Ohio State or the likes of Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Iowa? Compare them to RU and it won’t look so bleak especially from an NIL standpoint.

We just have the wrong person in charge to maximize NIL and performance.

Better coaching gets RU to 9-3 in 2024 and 8-4 in 2025. This season, better coaching gets RU to 4-3 instead of being a smaller shoe size away from being 1-6.

At least 6 losses since 2024 are attributable to inadequate coaching and preparation. They have nothing to do with facilities, NIL, or lack of donations. With better, or even competent, coaching, RU would be 21-10 since 2024 instead of 14-17 at this point. Lack of NIL is a bad excuse for what we've seen.

It's all about the $$$, collectively, beyond NIL, is my point. You want a competitive program, say in the conference's top third, you've got to get those enabling $$$. It'll empower you to get the staff and roster to get there. Our admin knows what $$$ are available for '27-28. That we're stumbling over a Schiano buyout is telling. $18.5 million is the current obstacle. It drops to $11.5 after next season.

When the new 24-team playoff scheme is in place (next year), making that field is the goal, not a conference championship. Coaching compensation packages will map to that new dynamic. Unless RU is in the top third of the B1G, and gathers the $$$ to get there, we'll be forever irrelevant.

Purdue has the lowest NIL in the Big Ten. Thus far this season they have managed to:
1. Take #14 Wake Forest to Double OT
2. Put up 38 against UCLA in a close game (down a TD with 10 minutes to go)
3. Crushed Minnesota 41-13, Minnesota has beaten Iowa, Michigan and Washington (all ranked at the time)
4. Beat Illinois (just beat Oregon)

Barry Odom has managed to use the portal to fill needs despite limited resources, and they are at least prepared to play every game (save ND). In addition, Purdue is just one example of a program that is able to utilize their resources effectively. Schiano is neither a good game coach nor does he identify needs and talent. More NIL won't fix what's wrong here. A change at the top will.

The irony is that when we get a new coach and they dont immediately compete with OSU the response will be "See?? We got a new coach and still getting beaten by OSU. We are still not competing for championships!"

Certain people will 100% hold the new coach to a standard they are actively downplaying when it comes to Schiano.

You won't see a "Give new Coach X a free pass because of blah blah blah" like Schiano gets from some.

Our support staff and spending is near the top of conference. The ROI is horrid

I’m gonna say it again:

- Schiano goes 9-3 with Indiana’s roster last year.

- Cignetti goes 7–5 with our current roster.

During the 2025 RutgersAl initiation of the ‘NIL manifesto’, many of us told him that more NIL may not help win in more games because there are way too many other inefficiencies in the program and NIL is just one input.

Fast forward and here we are, just as we thought might happen although I’m not sure any of us predicted the program would go BACKWARD with more money.

Did NIL dive headfirst on 2nd and 8 from the 40 yard line?

ANSWER IT

The game was actually potentially winnable had Lonergan played the whole game.

*** we spent $20 mil more than UMass and how much more than BC? Leads us back to the talent evaluation, player development, scheming and game prep of the crappy, bloated coaching staff.

Currently Rutgers is never getting to the top third, there is not enough support from alumni to get them there. But being consistently in the middle third means more support and a season or two where you can sneak into the top third.

Did a lack of NIL call an ill-advised timeout to ice the kicker on an unmakeable FG into a stiff wind against Illinois, leading to a walk off TD in a game RU basically had won?

Did a lack of NIL fail to prepare for UCLA (at the time the worst team in the B1G), resulting in an embarrassing home loss?

Did a lack of NIL cause RU to get run out of their own stadium by UMass, a team that was winless the previous season?

Did a lack of NIL cause a loss to BC, a team that was 2-10 the previous season?

Did a lack of NIL not make adjustments and blow halftime leads against Iowa, Minnesota, and Kansas State?

The numbers here are unreal. Give The Targum a click

Wow, just wow. I think we all intuitively know it, but it really is eye-opening when it’s laid out so plainly.

Side note: great work by the Targum. Sort of crazy that a college newspaper is producing better researched content than pretty much anything else I read these days.
