Big 10 is very comparable to the Big 8. Big 10 is essentially Ohio St. and everyone else with Penn St. and Wisconsin being the next tier. Back then it was NU and everyone else with KSU, CU and Mizzou being decent at time. Nice try though.
Here's how I see it. When Nebraska was good 20-30 years ago they had 1 perennial good team to bear. Occasionally they played a tough Tier 3 game when they were good. The middle of the Big 10 is much tougher than the middle of old Big 8.
Big 10
Tier 1 - OSU
Tier 2 - Mich, Penn St, Wisc,
Tier 3 - Iowa, Mich St, Nebraska, Minnesota, NW
Tier 4 - Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Maryland
Tier 5 - Rutgers

Big 8
Tier 1 - Oklahoma / Nebraska
Tier 2 - None
Tier 3 - Colorado, Oklahoma St
Tier 4 - Missouri, Kansas St
Tier 5 - Kansas, Iowa St

What years are you talking? Colorado was rated pretty high from like '88 to '2004 with a National Title in there. It's hard to account for the peaks and valleys of teams, but the big fallacy is that the Big 12 and the Big 8 were weak conferences. Every conference has weak teams, but from '96 to 2011 - Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas all won National Titles. Colorado & KSU all were in the hunt multiple times. Hell even Texas Tech, Mizzou, Oklahoma St., Kansas all had some decent seasons. The Big 10 essentially had Ohio State and Michigan and Penn St.

I actually used to have a ton of respect for Iowa football and their fans. I lost all of that this past year with all thier BS talk, kicking us while we are down and as far as they have trolled us and been obsessed with us this past year. We didn’t do that to them when where on a 7-9 game winning streak, we didn’t do that when Bo Pelini was on a 3-1 run against Iowa (Bo Pelini..and average coach owned Iowa)...but that didn’t matter. Iowa beats down on Mike Riley and his Husker teams and suddenly they live on our boards talking crap. Just wait till Scott Frost gets us going, keeps loading up those top 15-25 talent Andre get to beating Iowa on a regular basis again...pay back is coming.

The problem is we deserve it. Eichorst had to open his F$%* mouth. I'd join our neighbors to the East in wanting to sucker punch that guy. He is part of the reason we are where we are. I'd also like to give Harvey Perlman a ball tap as well.

we deserve it because an AD we fired popped off once? As soon as that guy was fired, that should have been dropped...assuming that’s what started it. That’s one man to how many Huskers and Husker fans?

Yes. No matter what the fans say, he was the head of all of our programs and made an idiotic statement. It doesn't matter if he was fired or not, the statement is still tied to this game and will remain until NU gets a victory. He also made the decision that continued NU down a vicious down cycle. He's a joke.

Below a post I made a month or so ago that brings to bear the lie that Nebraska somehow skated through a weak conference year after year in the Big Eight. The fact that Nebraska isn't any good right now has no bearing on what conference we were or currently are in. We just suck. And we admit it. We may be arrogant, but we're not stupid.

POST FROM OCTOBER
To imply that Nebraska during its four decades of dominance (roughly 1962 through 2001) was simply riding an easy schedule into the post-season — a la UCF in 2017 — is an ill-informed argument.

The chart at this link shows that the Big Eight was a better conference throughout the 1970s than the Big Ten and remained better through the 1980s and into the 1990s. The Big Ten was slightly better than the Big Eight/XII during Nebraska's 60-3 five-year run from 1993-1997. But Nebraska was crushing SEC teams for national championships and in other bowls during that period when the SEC took over as the best conference : 1963 over Auburn, 1969 over Georgia, 1970 over LSU, 1971 over Alabama, 1974 over Florida, 1980 over Mississippi State, 1982 over LSU, 1984 over LSU, 1986 over LSU, 1995 over Florida, 1997 over Tennessee and 1999 over Tennessee. I'm not even including regular-season victories against Auburn and Alabama.

I think any fair analysis would say that Nebraska was a national championship program during that 40-year period, no matter the strength of the Big Eight. From 1965 through 2001, Nebraska played in 10 bowl games where a win would mean a title. We won five of those.

Let's look at the Big Eight/XII during those 10 seasons in which Nebraska played for a national title:
Now let's look at the conference ratings during those seasons in which Iowa played for a national championship:

The Big Eight/XII was at least as good as the Big Ten during Nebraska's long run of championship contention.

What are we now? Not very good. But we can still cherish the past without some Hawkeye/Boiler/Buckeye/Wolverine/Badger illegitimately pissing in our Corn Flakes.

We cherish the past, live in the dismal present, and hope for a brighter future.

Lets get back to reality. I'd rather be Iowa and play in an Orange/Rose bowl every five years
Than be Nebraska and play in increasingly worse bowls to no bowls. Nebraska isn't anywhere close to a major bowl yet, and hasn't been in years.

Hi all,

Just thought I would stop by and see some of the banter about Friday's game. After reading this thread I just wanted to post my 2 cents.

1) Nebraska is a still a Blue Blood. They have accomplished more in their history than my Hawks have. I still have hopes that some day we can attain some of that glory.

2) Yes, Iowa has the better program in the last 10 years or so. But, to think that the Huskers won't get back to being a top tier program is just silly. It will happen, I just hope it doesn't happen at the expense of the Hawks. I actually do want this to happen so that the BIG West will finally get some needed respect in comparison to the BIG East.

3) I am hoping the Hawks can pull the game out this Friday, but I am having nightmares of A Mart. running all over the place against our D. He has played much better the last few games, as has the whole Husker offense.

4) I really do want this to be a rivalry. I already think many fans on both sides view it as such, but it might take more time to really get it going.

5) Very thankful that the Huskers are in the BIG. I felt like the conference hit a home run when it happened and I still feel that way.

Here is to a good game on Friday and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Another set of data to indicate the Big Ten isn't all that damn tough:
  • In our last eight years as members of the Big 12 (2003-2010), Nebraska went 37-27 in conference games.
  • In our first eight years as members of the Big 10,(2011-2018), Nebraska went 37-30 in conference games.
In other words, virtually identical records. However,
  • In eight NFL drafts between 2004-2011 (corresponding to the 2003-2010 football seasons), Nebraska had 33 players selected, including four first-rounders.
  • In eight NFL drafts between 2012-2019 (corresponding to the 2011-2018 football seasons), Nebraska had 16 players selected, and zero first-rounders.
In other words, we've achieved similar results in the Big 10 as we did in the Big XII, but with much less talent.

Tell me again how much tougher the Big Ten is and how that has contributed to Nebraska's demise ....

Thanks, and regarding East vs. West:
  • The count this year is East 10, West 10, with Purdue playing Indiana on Saturday to determine the "winning" division.
  • In 2018: East 11, West 10
  • In 2017: East 13, West 8
  • In 2016: West 11, East 10 (conference goes to 9 games per team/3 crossovers)
  • In 2015: West 7, East 7
  • In 2014: West 7, East 7
Before that, it was Legends and Leaders, or Ketchup and Mustard, or something like that.

In short, the West has always been pretty good, just not possessing an elite team or program.
