Big difference in Quade and Mason athletically..Have you seen some of Mason's dunks? Quade will never make NBA money.. His circle better be looking for jobs.

Mason is of course a better player. But was he after his freshman year? Marginally at best. He was a 3-star for a reason. He stayed four years, for a reason.

Maybe Green and his camp have high demands, but that's still just speculation.

The issue I continue to have is that many people are real quick to give up on him for the next shiny recruit. So again I ask, if Quickley and Hagans struggle, cost us a 4 seed and our ceiling becomes an Elite 8.. do we cast them off, too? Just to do this over and over again.

I'm not sure having SKJ, Green, PJ, Gabriel plus a decent class is the exact recipe for success (although it was in 2012 and 2015).. but what about the last three years makes you think our current plan is working? I would have really liked to see what those Sophomores and Juniors could have accomplished. Before SKJ left, I figured we'd walk to a 2 seed at least.

I have never fallen for this coach act BUT what he says could very well be true just by chance in this case. Well we will know in a few days either way if Green is staying or not . If this time next week nothing has come out we can rest easy.

A VERY small part to this might be the limited five star ranking system that has become universal. The "mentors" and people around the Briscoes and Quades see that they have the same five-star level as a Ben Simmons or Marvin Bagley and the people around them think they have the same pro potential. The reality is they pick 25 or so five stars every year, but only four or five tops are can't miss NBA prospects.

Dudes below the top five have no business feeling like they are failures if they are not one and done.

And where does that leave us then? A bunch of early loses and a bad start to SEC cause the players still don't know how to play together? You push out these possible veterans, and we'll be stuck with a 4 or 5 seed again and again.. and put in regions that we have little chance to win.

Kentucky in 2012 was the closest a 1AD (close in the sense of being mostly freshman) team got to winning the title.. After that it has not worked, aside from a fluke Final4 or two.
Fluke? You have to win 4 games, 4 full games to teams invited to the tournament or got in by winning their conference. We may have gotten break, but please don't refer to them as flukes

I meant that to all teams, not particularly Kentucky. Really, Duke's title with a few 1AD was "flukey".

But also, the 2014 title-appearance team.. Awesome that we hit 3 big shots, but that team could have VERY easily gone home in the first weekend. Kind of what kills me about this past year.. The SGA team could have JUST as easily marched to the Final4.

I think both of these years had the less likely scenario happen. The tournament is flukey, for everyone.

Frank Mason. 3-star recruit. Under 6 feet tall. Sucked his first two years.

The point being, you can't say "well he's 5'11 and a little skinny, he has no chance". You just can't say that after one year. We saw some great things from Quade, big shot making ability and his lockdown defense really stepped it up.

I will say, Mason was kinda jacked.. Green needs to hit the weight room.

...look in league and how many people are 5'11"?

Nobody knows, because nearly everybody in the pros who actually is 5'11" lists themselves as at least a 6-footer. That's been standard practice in the league for decades and decades.

Guard or big man?

This one is a guard.

You hearing about any bigs coming or should I say some forwards.

Not from my end...

If I were Cal I would be in a waiting pattern to see what Washington and Gabriel do before getting another big.

Still waiting for you to post something before the fact. Just once.

Pretty sure I had you all in the know about Quade and Quickley. In Quickley about six months in advance, but good morning to you my friend.

I don't care about being the first to share. I don't spend every waking minute just trying to scoop something for the internet.

Northern grad transfer....

Please be Joe Cremo from Ualbany. Campus is about 400 feet from me, I'll try and hide in his suitcase.

Cremo is actually the name I heard. Maybe you can share anything up on that end.

Crieghton WAS the favorite when he first decided to do the grad transfer route. I think Duke is involved.

@CoachX11 whats your thoughts on maxey reclassifying and coming to uk this year? Furthermore is he guaranteed to start at the 1 or 2 if he does? Lastly, what about wiseman what are you hearing? Really hoping quade stays!

Thanks coach

Your friend and fan
W2b

I like Maxey, but I love Hagans. Not sure he'd start, but who really cares who starts.

Maxey would be more of a wing for me, but I'm guessing Cal wants him now because he's pretty locked-in on some other guards for '19.

Wiseman I would still say UK. Penny at one time was going to go to UK, and Wiseman was going to commit soon after. I would still think that camp would want him being at UK over Memphis.

Yep. Apparently those buying his BS forgot last time he shared Knox would be coming back.

LOL. Reading comprehension my friend. I NEVER said he would be coming back. I said the family was strongly considering it. Was I wrong?

It's a message board. Nobody is ever 100% accurate expect the weynen teammate. I respect what coach has to say he is though and never says something is definitely going to happen. He puts out what he heard just like our own little creepers who follow highschool kids on twitter. I could understand if he was guaranteeing something, but we all know it changes like the wind. Take it all with a grain of salt

YES. THANK YOU. PREACH.

Here’s an excerpt from a 2017 article https://www.newyorker.com/news/sporting-scene/a-whirlwind-day-in-the-life-of-john-calipari

“Back on the road, Calipari called Tameka Johnson, the mother of Quade Green, a crafty point guard from Philadelphia. ‘I’m really excited to be coaching him,’ he told her. He hung up and informed Lindsey that Green had committed to Kentucky. ‘And they say I have to buy players—why would I need to buy players when all mine go to the N.B.A.?’”

Of course I want what’s best for him, I hope he returns.

If his inner circle is wanting him to make money sooner, I don’t see how transferring accomplishes that. It just puts him another year behind. If he and his family want to be closer, then that is hard to argue.
If what OPsays is true , his "inner circle " probably want him closer so they can have more access to him ( which is probably the WORST thing for him ) and have more "control " over the situation.

This is the same reason it's idiotic to say "X coach should have ____ titles."

One different bounce in 16-17 and we beat Carolina and maybe win the title. One different call against Wisconsin and we may go 40-0. If one three falls early in 2010 against WVU, maybe we get momentum and loosen up.

If Knight doesn't pull some heroics against Princeton we lose in the first round. If he misses against Ohio State. If Liggins misses against Carolina.

It's all so very close. Just get there as many times as you can with really good players, hope you're healthy, and see what happens.

I imagine we've been a bit on the luck side. But at the same time, these are NBA players who are starting to figure it out in Feb and March. Guys like Buddy Hield and Frank Mason were the same at the start of their senior year as theyw ere at the end.

But The twins, Fox, Bam, etc..

Right, which is why the seeding for us is almost always wrong.

We aren't the same team that loses to so and so in December or January, but you can't ignore an entire season and reward us for what we've done in the last 10 games because we aren't Duke.

DUke is apparantly out, Cremo cut his list a week or two ago and it didn't include us. However, that means nothing if Kentucky just started getting involved. But Duke, he had already visited/contacted or whatever, and THEN he cut them. Duke will not be getting Cremo.

Unfortunately, I have no inside information on this. I could be his damn class mate and I probably wouldn't have info.

I do think it's highly unlikely Cremo would come to a school with 5 guards already.

That's uh.. different than what I thought your take was above. Hard to tell what's facetious and what isn't on the forums.

These recruits aren't "bailing" (if that post above was sarcasm, again hard to tell).. it seems they are leaving in part because they are unsure of their roles.
Or because they or their "inner circle " won't accept their roles .

You are so right. If you watch NASCAR any you have likely heard the top drivers say they are looking for top 10 and top 5 finishes every week. If you run up front every race, the wins will come.

I agree 100%. but this goes way back to my argument earlier in the thread: my belief is that an experienced team will make less mistakes, not only saving our early W/L record, but it will show in the tournament.

3 guys in the draft, one transfer, still waiting on 3 more. It's going to be a brand new team again unless we somehow keep a combination of Green/PJ/Gabriel.

We'll lose early games, and be stuck with a 3 seed or lower (probably lower). Then we'll get stuck with a **** region and it will be an uphill battle. Maybe next years young team can win? But it hasn't worked much before.

Sure you did!!

2. I'll be fascinated by the decisions of these UK guys. I think to Coach Cal's and UK's advantage. He's got two really smart set of parents in his corner. The Knox and Washington families both get it, and will make a really good decision either way.

I think the biggest success Cal had this year is having this group love the stage of Big Blue Nation, even with some big ups and downs.

I'm going to make a prediction that Knox will be the first to return, which will create a nice chain reaction of good decisions.

You also said in this same post that Montgomery was pretty much a Duke lock, which wasn't even close to the case and that you weren't really sold on the Hagan's stuff which had been done for weeks.

You keep citing the Green and Quickly predictions. Where were these Green predictions, because I only seem to see where you started commenting on him after he committed to us and everyone knew about Quickly to UK for over a year.

Sometimes it just boils down to match ups.

Kinda like in 2014 when we beat UofL twice and they had ran UCONN out of the building and then UCONN beat us for the title.

We should have beaten Wisconsin, but they were probably the worst match up for us in the country.

Obviously, Duke matched up with them better than we did, and we may have killed Duke if we'd have played them.
True , but U6 played zone 95% of that game and in those days Cal would rather lose than play zone , evidently.

You can choose to believe the OP if you want to. You can choose not to believe it. But I could of written this entire thread myself and said I have connections. Nothing that he says is way off base, and it's hard to prove right or wrong. I said when Hagans committed, I said get ready, Green will likely transfer. That doesn't make me an insider with connections.

I agree!

Even though they matched up well with us, we still should have beaten them.

Realistically, Ole Miss kind of laid the blue print of how to play us, and then Notre Dame almost took us out, and then Wisconsin pulled it off.

Teams started spreading us out, pulling our rim protectors away from the basket and having their guards drive the ball and we never adjusted to that.

Could Duke have beaten us doing this?

Probably not, but that was the ONLY way our 2015 team was going to get beat...
Agreed , teams started using our " always switch on screens " defense to their advantage. Opposing coaches could basically pick the matchup they wanted. That's why Willie was out at the top of the key guarding their point guard while Booker was getting abused by Dekker underneath . Willie was too far away to provide help . I really believe Notre Dame might have won the championship had we not beaten them . They were maybe the hottest team in the tournament and were the best team in the ACC that year .

Hey folks, want to touch on Quade real quick and give you some insight on what is going on with Quade Green.

This is a big case of adults pressuring a kid and literally all in his head.

First let it be known that Quade had a very large group in his circle that didn’t want him going to UK. He chose UK, and that group is now extremely loud on him leaving to be closer to home.

Quade comes from a large family circle and quite frankly not a whole lot of money. Quade has a whole lot of pressure on him to be a bread maker. There isn’t a whole lot of educational history in his family so I’m worried not enough emphasis is being placed on him earning a degree.

When Quade moved to a reserve role, it was the first time anyone in his circle saw him sit, and that upset some, including him. People back home, people I’m personally friends with started feeding a lot of negativity in his ear.

From my understand, Coach Cal through he was selfish. Which is a big no-no if you coach thinks that. There was tear in that relationship for a while, but it got fixed during a heart to heart at some point.

Cal has also told recruits that he’s expecting to lose all his guards.

I vaguely remember seeing a quote basically saying that Cal was still waiting on a couple to break through. Quade was his main target.

He played almost 30 minutes a game as a freshmen. After watching him this year, I really worry about his lack of athletic ability at the next level. However, there is still value to be in college for a few years.

Quade is a good kid, and I think at the end of the day he wants to be at UK. It’ll be interesting to see what his circle does from here.

As much as I love Quade, if his circle is going to be this much of an influence it may be better to go their separate ways. Kind of sad for both involved.

If he does leave, keep Temple in the back view. There isn’t a scholarship for him right now, but they’ll make one. There is also a pretty good connection with UCONN and Syracuse. I saw LaSalle on Twitter. I don’t think that would be preferred destination.

Lastly, know that the people we are mutually associated with are encouraging another year at UK then reevaluate it.

Oh, lastly I won’t name this person as it may hurt his chances. But there is a Northeatern grad transfer that UK hasn’t talked to personally but have sent feelers for. So seems like the UK staff is doing a lot of work.

Amazing stuff.

Just glad we have someone so connected to the inner workings of everyone from Zion's circle, to Quade's circle, to Knox's circle, to Hami's circle, etc.

I also read the other day that his inner circle wasn't happy when he was moved from point. They said he had to adjust 3 times and he wasn't used correctly. Yeah, because he isn't a first round pick Cal didn't use him correctly LMFAO. I mean he played 30mins a game. What the hell is wrong with people, Shai made us so much better running point. Hate to break it to his circle, but he is a 4 year player. If he sticks with it and works hard he might make some money overseas or maybe the G league, but Green is not as of now anywhere close to a NBA PG. These people must live with their heads in the clouds.

I like him, I think he would do well to stick it out here instead of tuck and run. All that will happen if he transfers to one of the schools mentioned is he will not be heard from again, not in any major way anyway. People need a reality check, coming to Ky doesn't automatically reserve you an NBA spot after 1 year. Work and earn it, if you are a 3-4 year player then you are period. His best chance to ever have a chance at his dreams and get max exposure is staying here and working his *** off. If not, go, getting sick of these kids thinking the world owes them something. You have played 1 year in college and not won much of anything, Dam! The culture of basketball from early to the NBA needs to be shaken up. It's getting ridiculous. Green and his inner circle, what a joke!
Derrick Thornton played 26 mpg for us at the point and would have played more the next year but his Uncle claimed he wasn’t properly utilized.Transferred had to sit out a year and then played less than twenty mpg.

matches up with what i've heard. cal wasn't going to go into 2018 with just 1 PG so he started searching and found out there are guards that can be pulled into the 2018 class that are pretty damn good. now that wheels are in motion cal isnt going to stop and look like an ***, QG is going to have to sleep in the bed he made. he had his chance to stop this. if he wants to come back now...he will have more competition than he had before. i'm guessing he wont and honestly that might be the best choice for everyone.

i like green. as i like skj. but if these guys dont want to be here, good luck on your next stop.
"QG is going to have to sleep in the bed he made. he had his chance to stop this" What's this mean? Cal told Green he would get him to the nba in two years when he was choosing between Syracuse and UK. I remember reading that by one of his relatives.

Obviously Green has to work hard for it. Nothing and I mean nothing to his game shows me 2 and done. He has an avg handle, makes poor decisions when under pressure. Seems to have tunnel vision when driving. Not quick, doesn't have a first step, avg passer, above average shooter. The relative is probably a victim of magical thinking...now all of this can be improved. Green needs to stay on campus all summer, works out plays pickup games, shoot shoot shoot. Dribble dribble dribble...work with Richards and PJ and others to develop the mind meld, or non verbal signals to run plays...do everything Cal asks and maybe just maybe set up some healthy boundaries with his family members or whoever is in his circle...it's not helping him succeed, I hope they aren't making Cal vs Green in Quade's head...

Posters here regularly commented how bad Mason sucked during his first couple of years and some asked why Self would recruit such a scrub, and now it seems some are acting as if it was a given he was this athletic freak with upside to be a great point guard. He averaged 5 and 2 and shot 32 percent from 3 his freshman season.
