Time to be fair to Cal. He did insert Allen early in the first half . And yes he would have stuck with Boston but he knows we cannot win an SEC championship without getting Clarke and Boston performing as well. Allen is not going to get 15-20 every game.
Anyone with eyes can see Allen is a better player than Clarke and Boston. So whatever you thought about needing Clarke and Boston to play well, you can say that about Allen. Boston does not need to be what we thought he would be to win an SEC championship. Allen has to be what we thought Boston would be, and Boston can be what many thought Allen would be (a bench player who gets 5-10 minutes).

I’m not going to go back through threads as I don’t have the time to waste on that, but as I recall I had seen 15-20 separate instances insisting that Cal is doing this for reasons other than at the end of the season putting the best roster on the floor. Again his strategy has to do with giving players with the most upside the most minutes to get them experience, not spiting the fans, players from KY, playing favorites or any of the other conspiracy theories going around.

I totally understand disagreeing with or plain hating that strategy but argue the strategy not conspiracies.
I get your argument about playing the players with the “most upside”. However, how does one say that Boston or Clarke has more upside than Allen? Is it ranking in high school and/ or AAU ball or is it the proficiency demonstrated in practice and games? As someone in another thread said, Cal seems to play the more assertive players over more timid players. This usually works out, but sometimes the more timid players play smarter and are better shooters.
I think it’s unfair to guys live Willis and Allen to characterize them as being less deserving of playing time because they didn’t come in ranked as 5* and in the top 50 of whatever ranking service that is used.
Just play the guys who can help you win in college and let the NBA and One-N-Done wannabes sort things out on their own. But we know that’s not Cal’s M.O. and probably never will be.

Why exactly is this in reply to my post? I made no statement on being for or against a certain strategy and simply pointed out actual facts.
because, facts do make for good agendas... and the subject must get back to why Cal sucks

Actually, earlier in the season, in those first few games where Allen got playing time, I would have made the opposite statement. I would have said "Anyone with eyes can see Clarke and Boston are better players than Allen." I would have said they're not even in the same category of player. I still wouldn't say Allen is so obviously a better player. I would say he's a better shooter. That much truly is obvious after seeing Allen's game against Miss St. I just hope he keeps playing the same way. What was almost as impressive to me about Allen's improvement is that he didn't just shoot the ball with more confidence, he played better defense, he rebounded, he played well with teammates, and etc. He looked better all the way around. So, NOW, I would partially agree with you. Allen does have the potential to be the permanent starter at small forward. I think he should start against Vandy. I hope he does.

How could you have judged before the Mississippi State game? He had a season high of 8 minutes before that. He’s a good player and has been a good player and will be a good player. He didn’t just become a good player before the Miss St game, and if he only plays 5 minutes next game, it doesn’t mean he’s a bad player now.

Good post! At this point, Allen has had ONE great terrific game. I think we have to temper expectations a bit going forward until he proves that his wasn't a one and done deal.

I said the same thing about Miller and you would not believe the consternation it caused on the board. I was pretty much flamed and called everything but a good milk cow for my comment but he was a big factor in our National Title win.
That in bold is funny my man, never heard that saying. Thanks. [roll][roll]

I’m not sure that was said or not but you’re being disingenuous here. Allen checked in first with about 12:30 left in the first half when he almost immediately hit a 3. I’m almost certain he was subbed in at least 3 times in the first half. He had made his 2nd 3 pointer prior to Cal getting ejected. Cal was playing him and all of you strange folks that think he doesn’t want Dontaie to be good so he can play Boston and Clarke more are insane. Would Cal have benched Boston like Bruiser did? I doubt it, but to say Allen didn’t get in until nearly halftime is absolute horse pucky.

Yes!!

This crap needs to stop & mods @JRowland to stop this crap!! This unwarranted dumping on Coach Cal after all he has done for UK is shameful.

So @JRowland please stop this mess or you will lose more subscribers.

But no one actually believe Donte's Coach was holding him out to push him.

I go back to Dante's tweet over Christmas...you know the one everyone thought meant he was transferring. He knew he had to get better in areas to play. His tweet was about really putting the work in the areas that kept him from playing. Shooting was NEVER one of them. And kudos to the kid because he is starting to understand defensive rotations now.

Bottom line...Coach Cal pushed the kid. Said he was getting better & would soon get his chance. Cal gave it to him putting him in early & then again in 2nd half. Donte did well.

But....our know it all fans think Cal did not want Dante to do well...lol.

You're just wrong here. It's obvious he wants to tank the season and have Clarke and Boston go 2nd round because of their bad showing.

Unwarranted dumping? Lost 6 games in a row, don't deserve being dumped on? But I agree with you, if you want this board to be nothing but sunshine pumping, then everyone critical of Cal should banned.

Eh, some people fear any type if ripples in the water and some of these guys don't know how to form their own opinons. They're followers and Cal is an easy leader to latch on to. He tells when what is right and wrong at they hang on every word.
The rest of us stand up for what we care about and don't need someone else to feed us a bunch of BS.

His strategy is simple to understand and I can’t figure out why this board doesn’t get it.

He plays freshman that, with heavy minutes, will outperform other players given the same number of minutes at the END of the season, often at the cost of early performance and yes, even wins.

He’s pretty good at ascertaining which players will be the best by seasons end but he doesn’t always get it right.

And you must not have read the board much if you missed the constant posts about Cal being pissed in the locker room every time Allen scored and how he was going to have to stick it to the fans and not play him even more now to prove a point that he was right about Boston and Clarke.

Cal may not always play the player that is best right now but he doesn’t actively hope his bench performs poorly, fact.
Great post.
Careful- many don’t like to think Cal has a plan or even wants to win games now. We have gone over to the absurd.

As a kid growing up in Marrowbone. We would leave the fields and go to Stovers grocery for lunch, usually bologna. We always called it Barren County ham, since we couldn’t afford real ham. Nell Stover would ask you how thick you wanted it and cut it off a big loaf.
I used to take my kids to Sewell’s store at Waterview for lunch. They always got baloney and crackers. Boyd would always slice it extra thick for them. Some twenty years later, they still rave about how good it was. Miss those old country stores something awful. And lots of Cats discussion always going on. You can bet a few posters on here would get their clocks cleaned back then for the way they talked to others on here. Totally different world now.

Yes i see him as darius miller type if it was not for him we would not have won in 2012 was miller time when he checked in

Darius Miller saved Kentucky in the Final Four against Louisville. When UL tied the game at 54, Miller made some very good defensive plays. The tide that turned in our favor is the 2 steals that Miller got leading to one 3 point shot and a layup for another. In that small amount of time, Miller earned that title that year. Miller went through some rough patches before Calipari was head coach.

I was so happy for that kid because all of his hard work and patience paid off big.
