You 'we must play some zone every game' guys, at this time of the year, just dont get what's going on with a Cal coached team. Your ego says we must do whatever it takes to win games now because I hate to lose games. Cal says we must get better each game by playing the most challenging way so we can be our best at the end of the season AND while trying to also win games. Same with minutes for players like EJ and to a lesser extent Whitney. It's about the tourney isn't it and not your ego needing to win every game possible? You can't imagine what Cal has to balance in these conditions.

just curious what happens In March if we go up against a team that is beating us off the dribble and scoring at will every single time down court, just take our lumps and say well ****, maybe next year. Because we can’t certainly switch to a defense that has only been played a handful of possessions all year long to try and counter the other team. Yeah, excellent coaching insight you have there.

NO ONE IS SAYING PLAY ZONE ALL GAME LONG. Yelled that for those of you hard of hearing. Be willing to throw a wrinkle at the other team. I did like in the first half we went to a 3/4 trapping press for a couple of possessions. Letting our team get abused off the dribble all night tonight didn’t help us for March at all. In fact probably hurt. Smart coaches out there will know how to get us when it matters and they have the personnel to do it with because they know Cal will never counter them.

this chic has been doing this garbage schtick longer than @ScrooDook92. It’s hilarious.

It’s obvious you only read 3% of my posts. You probably missed where I just spent two weeks with the team because im very close with one of the families. I’ve been 90% positive on this team and even pointing out playing zone is no negative.

I on the other hand see many of yours and know you are a complete sociopath/narcissist who has bragged about exploits that are perceivably scandalous in nature. You make posts asking for likes and measure everything based on that. You toot your own horn every chance you get.

Yep.....this seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to post after a double digit win lol

And some folks act like we just won the super bowl. Giving up 81 and 79 to two conference bottom feeders in one week is cause for concern. Btw the loss last week is being overlooked and beating uga at home isn’t going to make up for it

You seem fixated on those numbers yet ignore the fact that we scored 89 and just put up one of our best offensive nights of the season as far as efficiency goes.

I mean they scored 79 points in 73 possessions........it's not good but certainly not the end of the world.

The odds are not in our favor if we give up 80 points. And like i said you can be satisfied beating the bottom feeder at home but we lost to a worse team last week giving up over 80. I’m relieved we won but this was no game to get excited over. Uga was in it most of the way

The line was what in this......11.5? We won by 10.

We did exactly what we were supposed to do in this one.

Yeah the defense gave up more than expected........but the offense scored more.

No big deal.

Since Edwards hit a deep 3 against us when we went to zone. Cal doesn’t want to hear about zone again.

You really believe that? If we don’t go zone against Arkansas we lose like we did to usc. The easy branch is 1 title with all the talent we’ve had since cal came but I’m not going there. Loooking ahead no zone we get put out of the NCAA the first weekend
Arkansas quit hitting shots. They had open looks while we were in zone. Went to zone due to foul trouble. I’m for whatever gets us the win but your reasoning is off base.

We won by 10 when projected to win by KenPom by 16 and Vegas by 16.5. Not understanding the vitriol toward OP.
Kenpom and Vegas don't pull numbers from some alternate world where everything works as it should.

They put up numbers based on previous outcomes and betting history - and Cal has given them more Ws than anybody else, so guess which gamblers have been most profitable over the past decade? Hint: not the ones betting against him.

very true. Reality is in the middle. UK just beat who they were supposed to beat but lost to a team they wasn’t supposed to lose too. I’m just happy with Cal leading the team to a win but like some, understand that UK was supposed to beat these N.I.T bound teams. Not sure if they turn the corner yet but luckily the game with Texas Tech will answer that

is that really how betting on games work in casinos? I’ve always bet with friends but never that way. Was under the impression that you have to bet a lot just to win a little on the fav(UK) but you bet a little to win a lot when you bet the underdog (betting on Evansville, Utah, South Carolina).

That's true, but that's not my point.

I'm talking about a consistent unilateral betting behavior over the long run.

Obviously, Vegas works hard to ensure that regardless of which side of a bet you fall on, you lose in the long run.

But as recently as a few years ago, Cal was second or third in the country in outperforming expectations in March. It's not uncommon to see the market lag behind a team that keeps raising the expectation threshold, but given how untouchable Cal's first 6 years were, it may be the case that he's a bad bet now.

But the point is - that's only because he did it to himself.

Nobody gives 15 or 17 points or whatever due to careful evaluation of rosters and their high school talent. It's due to the betting histories which form around what actually occurs in the real world.

That's why it's stupid to say 'Cal failed because Vegas thought he should've won by 15'. That just doesn't make sense.

Cal was first in out performing in March.

We also won by ten

But the reason it wasn't more was Georgia really fought till the end. We relaxed around 14 point lead and then before we know it was back down to 7.

Finally ending at +10.

Cats like to play with their prey before killing them. Cal knows what he’s doing and zone won’t help us master man to man by March.

Trust the coach. Enjoy the ride. Simple.

I will say this tho.......being projected to win by a certain amount and winning by that amount or close to the spread is fine but if we want to do damage in the tournament, we do need to start over performing. There's still plenty of games yet but to take the next step, the team has to start winning these games by 15-20.

We were 22nd in KP coming into that game and 21st afterwards. It was a fine win but it didnt move the needle.

Currently we are 31st in offensive efficiency. If we finished there it would be the second lowest mark in the Cal era (2013 was worse offensively).

Currently we are 35th in defensive efficiency. That would be 3rd worst if we finished there (2013 and 2016 being worse).

We need to get into the top 25 IMO in both. Top 10 or 15 in one would be nice.

Like I said plenty of time but at some point we need to get going.

The fact he hasn’t ran a zone even one possession this game is comical.

He finally did play zone and said they had a easy wide open 3 so went right back to man.

I don’t understand when they are getting abused in man he just keeps playing it with no change.

Might as well give it up. He cannot stand zones regardless it it makes more sense too play at times.

You don't hire a passing oriented offensive coordinator then ask why he ain't running the triple option.

Cal teaches M2M. Cal is winning over 80% of his games. You want zone go watch SYRACUSE. Stop bashing Cal.

No one said to go to zone exclusively.

It is about playing to win regardless of what defense were in.

Being able to switch defenses and show the other team a different look can be a positive.

Still go back to UConn championship game. We play some zone. We are 2014 champs.

I dont coach basketball and the principles of zonal defending are pretty universal throughout sports. You’re not used to hearing a coach speak you need it broken down like jimmy dykes between the pipes

Lay off the drinks, nobody will take you serious spouting off nonsense like "zonal defending positions!?" You can be serious with that.

I'm old. I'm growing down. You won't take life so serious once you're there. Have a good night young man.
Young cats, this man speaks the truth. When you age, like fine wine, life takes the edge off you and removes those chips on your shoulders. Also , you physically 'grow down'. After a stroke, ten years ago, lost two inches off my height. Not complaining, its a good thing . It puts me closer to my grand kids:)

It was the opposite of an easy wide open 3. Quickley was in his shorts and Edwards made a great shot.

I thought so as well but he doesn't agree lol

After the game, Calipari said, “We went zone. I had Nate in instead of Keion. I wish I would have done it different… we gave them — my man got a three and you know me, ‘Guys, that’s it, no more zone, so don’t even tell me about the zone.’

“I mean, the guy was open, their best shooter,” he said of Georgia’s Anthony Edwards getting a good look against UK’s zone. “You’re in a zone. One guy’s not shooting: him. We gave him the shot. Well, I would rather be man-to-man and have Immanuel hanging on him or Ashton.”

our first zone look we gave them there was a guy wide open in the corner and he missed. 2nd time down the court we defended extremely well. Edwards took and made a highly contested 25 foot shot and that was it for Cal. As I have stated in other threads it will only take one made basket to get cal out of zone and he proved me right tonight.

Just simply no logic in his thinking that he can watch the other team score 10 straight trips in MTM and isn’t bothered by it in the slightest but one made tough jumper against the zone, ABORT!!!! And again why he will never win another natty with this philosophy....and I hope like hell he proves me wrong but I won’t hold my breath.

FWIW teams are only shooting 44.5% on 2s against us and 29.1% on 3s.

Our defense is doing something right.

FWIW it's not the zone or man to man that's an issue. It's that we simply do not force enough turnovers on defense. In SEC play, we force turnovers on just 14.9% of the opponents possessions.

It's never been a huge staple of Cal's defenses, but we have guys like Hagans, Maxey and Quickley..........we should force more turnovers.

Guess you are showing how little you know about the sport of basketball. Evidently you must have missed the part of the game we played ZONE. It's comical how some people expose how little they know.

I posted that literally the possession before we went zone for two consecutive possessions. Trust me Bud I know plenty about the game, coached for pay in my younger years before I chose a different career path. Anytime you want to compare knowledge let me know.
