Couple of things my friend. I wanted KJ and Herro to return as much as you and everyone else. I was as bitterly disappointed in losing to Auburn and Kansas State as you. But I also realize winning the NCAA title is a crap shoot. I also believe if Jay Wright can do it after 15 years and K can do it after 10 years, Cal isn’t done. I could be wrong- but Cal has proven he can win a title. I know you are a big UK fan and damn good poster. We just have different perspectives of the near future of UK basketball. I remain bullish.

Good thoughts.

I know for some of our fans who have been posting on here with us for years, this month just represents that annual cleansing of the soul process. We need to vent because we love our program and want the best for it (just like you do).

This is that time of the year.

Once the season gets here, we'll all be ready to back the team. Sometimes that will include more venting, but most of us are reasonable.

I will say that there is zero room for anyone calling for Cal's head, however - at any point. He's the best option available and we're lucky to have the man.

One other thing. I respect KJ and Herro for going ahead and announcing in April and not stringing us along. They are both good kids and deserve success.

They were good, but my point was that they weren't a threat for anything of significance that year. Had they made it to the Final Four (or even Elite Eight by getting through UK and UCLA), all of us would have been surprised. Additionally, you of all people understand how stats can be somewhat inflated when playing a crappy schedule. Gonzaga was the recipient of that this year, to an extent, and you've commented on that.

So that Wichita State game represented a good hard fought win. Certainly not a standout win like we saw against the teams UK faced in the 2014 or 2011 Final Four runs.

We've beaten two teams since the end of 2014 that were a real threat to advance to the Final Four: Notre Dame in 2015 and UCLA in 2017.

I mean, we haven’t had that many opportunities. When you’re seeded higher, you don’t get those until the Sweet 16 or so.

We blew it in 2016. Two very good wins in 2017 (sorry, you aren’t knocking me off of Wichita), we kind of sucked in 2018, then knocked off Houston, who was a definite FF contender this year.

Not the greatest run in our history, but not the worst. Sure, we beat a bunch of tough teams in 2011 and 2014, but I would rather have the better seed.

Sorry man, I’m just not feeling your argument. We have been a little down, but it hasn’t been terrible.

Well, some things never change.

I guess we’ll be a player or two short again next season.

At least I won’t have to listen to the guy that sits in front of me ***** and moan about him.

I like Keldon and Tyler a lot, but the truth is their legacy here is basically nothing.

They didn’t win an SEC regular season or Tournament title, and they didn’t make a Final Four.

Good luck to both.

I'm not arguing it's been terrible. That might be why you're not feeling it.

I'm suggesting it's been kind of average by tournament standards (when considering our odds of winning against teams that have beaten us) and pretty good by regular season standards. Certainly not "moving the needle" or "gold standard" level, however. The last two years have ended in massive disappointments. The key component there is that there was an expectation to win, so that negates "terrible" as a legitimate complaint.

My focus is on the tournament performances that haven't been capitalized on: the best backcourt in UK history in 2016; horrific shooting performances from Mulder and Willis in 2017 against UNC; and two crappings of the bed in 2018 and 2019 against KSU and Auburn.

I actually think Cal is shifting the paradigm slightly to make necessary adjustments. I also think he's been trying to push guys to come back. Those are really the two things I've wanted the most over the last 12 months, and they're happening, so my complaint level going forward is dissipating considerably.

That said, the last frontier for me is actually seeing our guys not beat themselves in March. The last five years, that's precisely what's happened. Even that 2017 team you love to cite so much could have advanced with average play from Monk or a mere one more made shot from Willis/Mulder duo.

I do think we're due for some brighter days, however. I'm just presently lamenting the fact that we've literally pissed away back to back Final Four opportunities because of mental breakdowns. My present position regarding KJ or Herro is that returning either of those guys elevates your title chances considerably. Additionally, I'm not sure we'll be better next year as far as talent is concerned. The real hope is that the rest of college basketball is collectively down.

I'm also a little surprised he didn't wait a bit longer to gather more feedback.

No one to be mad at.. but it is getting tiring seeing these guys do just enough to get drafted. Cal has now gone into the 20's, 30's and even 40's for recruits and still loses a handful of them after one year.

Losing Herro really has me ready for 1AD to end. Let 8 or 9 of the top10 go to the draft out of highschool. Everyone wins. Players win. College basketball wins. NBA gets what it wants.

Honestly the only loser in this system, right now, is Cal and our fans. If we can barely scratch the top10 anymore, then lets move on from 1AD recruiting.

What does that help? Borderline players like Knox would still go after a year as would guys like Shai and Herro would still be drafted just as they are now.

The toothpaste does not easily go back in the tube.

That is the sad aspect of the one n done era. Man if this was the mid 1950's and these players had to spend 3-4 years in College. We would have so many records that would be untouchable. So many great teams we would be UCLA on steroids.

I don’t think we’ve beaten ourselves 5 straight years. I don’t think we beat ourselves in 2017, and I don’t really think we did in 2015.

That being said, we did play well and win several games along the way in most of these past few seasons. It’s the reality of the tournament that in the game that you ultimately lose, you likely don’t play your best. Whether that’s attributable more to personal failure or to the other teams’ effort is debatable.

There were stretches of the game against Auburn where I would agree that we “beat ourselves,” but then we still came from 6 behind in the closing minutes and had two cracks at taking the lead when it was 60-60 with only seconds remaining.

One more ball bouncing our way and we go from “beating ourselves” to “epic comeback.” And so it goes in March. Just ask Virginia, or dozens more before them.

If he'd taken a while to decide, he's selfish for "stringing us along" (taking time to make a big decision for his future).

Instead, he announces early, not "stringing us along", but instead he's accused of just leaving immediately because maybe he doesn't have any loyalty to the university.

He does it early, he's selfish. Late, he's selfish.

The only option he could've pursued and not had the idiots on him would be to turn down guaranteed millions so you guys could watch him for another year. And he's the selfish one?

Also, as awesome as he would've been, our backcourt will be as strong as any in the country. We're a single viable big man (whether a new guy or improved returner) away from being awesome next year.

I would also offer that UK is dangerously close to running out of the "woulda" "coulda" angle before Cal starts being seen as a coach whose teams don't close out in big games in March. At that point, the "shoulda" will be all that's really audible among the fan base.

We need to break through within five years; and by break through, I mean get back to a title game.

You're acting as if it's hopeless that Cal will win another title here at UK and I'm the one whining. Get a clue dude. Maybe pick a Div II team or a NAIA team that has teams full of 3-4 year players.
My life is pretty good now. I am not whining and crying like a kid on the playground who dropped his ice cream cone.

Yeah, you’re exactly right.

Cal is doing everything he can to sprinkle in multi year players, but he not catching many breaks yet.

SGA and Herro weren’t expected to be gone after a year. Allen is not expected to be a one year player. EJ isn’t going to be a one and done.

Maybe the grad transfer route will be the trick to overcome all the roster turnover.

I don’t give a damn about the number of stars beside their names. I want to recruit guys that are winners. If that’s a five star or a three star, so be it.

There’s a lot of 5 stars that weren’t worth the trouble, and there’s a lot of 3 stars that just know how to play winning basketball.

No brainer for the kid. Can't pass up being a top 20 NBA draft pick. I think he'll have a long, solid NBA career.

Also, I don't think it's a coincidence that the team Cal won a title with didn't have extreme roster turnover the year before. I'm not going to say Cal's not going to win another one but it's going to be very difficult losing so many guys that you recruit to be 2-3 year players.
I think he will be in the d league or over seas within 5 years

Cal has won the most games in CBB since he got to UK. Won the most tourney games as well. Avg over 30 wins a season. Is the most successful coach at UK since Rupp. And you pronounce today there's no chance he wins another title at UK with his current model. 7 of 10 years in EE/
Is that enough FACTS for you? There's a couple of big words in there. Maybe somebody can help you with them. Or you could just grow up.

I think it is ballsy of Cal to sign up for the lifetime contract quite honestly. He has alot to gain and a lot to lose in terms of how his tenure is viewed at UK....the problem is it is going to be much harder to gain than it is to lose. It isn't easy winning titles and that is ALL many judge a UK coach on.

He has been here 10 years and won more than anyone has in that span....has a title, several final fours, could ride off into the sunset and MOST would view his time here favorably. They'd say he prolly should have won 1 more title, etc...but overall people would be happy, program in good shape, etc.

IF he is here another 5-10 years without a title those same MOST will flip and turn to complete naysayers regarding Cal's time at UK and understandably so....as the 1 more title thing will start to become more painful.

My guess...Cal puts in another 10 and hangs it up around 70. We have 1 to 2 more titles and he is in legend status....undoubtedly 2nd greatest coach ever at UK, he gets to that 3 number and is going down as neck and neck with Rupp.

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Those are all great stats.

Cal has done a great job. No doubt about it.

The last 10 years have been tremendous.

My statements today were of the program going forward. Today.

All of our Final-4 teams under Cal featured top 3-5 recruits. We’ve had 1 top 3-5 dude since 2015, and zero Final-4’s. (Skal). So we’re not landing the elite of elite players anymore, and that’s fine. As recruiting shifted, we found ourselves landing middle to lower end 5 star dudes, and a few 4 star dudes. That was fine, and our plan was to bring some of these guys back. And we have brought a few back, but at the end of the day, our roster turnover is no different than when we were landing the truely elite 5 star freshman. Now we’ve gone 4 years straight without reaching the Final-4. There is a direct correlation with that stat and our drop in recruiting. No top 3-5 dudes, no Final-4’s. And now that I’ve seen the same trend every season where we lose 80-90% of the scoring from our roster, I’ve seen enough to believe we are not winning another title without having solid upperclassman, and/or truely elite Freshman.

Very true.

And two of those three coaches culminated those "meh" periods with a national title right afterward.

Cal will likewise be expected to deliver soon.

Not sure how anyone could be surprised or upset about this. Herro had a great year and improved his overall game immensely. This is a succuss story for both Tyler and Cal, and it seems like Herro is eager to be a great ambassador for the program.

He's gonna get real paid

I think his ego wont let him "pitch" a kid to stay...
Yup it seems like that Dajuan Wagner situation did a number on Cal mental and even then he told Wagner to leave so I guess he’s always been like that .
