I mean, we haven’t had that many opportunities. When you’re seeded higher, you don’t get those until the Sweet 16 or so.
We blew it in 2016. Two very good wins in 2017 (sorry, you aren’t knocking me off of Wichita), we kind of sucked in 2018, then knocked off Houston, who was a definite FF contender this year.
Not the greatest run in our history, but not the worst. Sure, we beat a bunch of tough teams in 2011 and 2014, but I would rather have the better seed.
Sorry man, I’m just not feeling your argument. We have been a little down, but it hasn’t been terrible.
I'm not arguing it's been terrible. That might be why you're not feeling it.
I'm suggesting it's been kind of average by tournament standards (when considering our odds of winning against teams that have beaten us) and pretty good by regular season standards. Certainly not "moving the needle" or "gold standard" level, however. The last two years have ended in massive disappointments. The key component there is that there was an expectation to win, so that negates "terrible" as a legitimate complaint.
My focus is on the tournament performances that haven't been capitalized on: the best backcourt in UK history in 2016; horrific shooting performances from Mulder and Willis in 2017 against UNC; and two crappings of the bed in 2018 and 2019 against KSU and Auburn.
I actually think Cal is shifting the paradigm slightly to make necessary adjustments. I also think he's been trying to push guys to come back. Those are really the two things I've wanted the most over the last 12 months, and they're happening, so my complaint level going forward is dissipating considerably.
That said, the last frontier for me is actually seeing our guys not beat themselves in March. The last five years, that's precisely what's happened. Even that 2017 team you love to cite so much could have advanced with average play from Monk or a mere one more made shot from Willis/Mulder duo.
I do think we're due for some brighter days, however. I'm just presently lamenting the fact that we've literally pissed away back to back Final Four opportunities because of mental breakdowns. My present position regarding KJ or Herro is that returning either of those guys elevates your title chances considerably. Additionally, I'm not sure we'll be better next year as far as talent is concerned. The real hope is that the rest of college basketball is collectively down.
