It would be sheer stupidity to fire Lebby after this season. Even tho a lot of sixpackers would love it, I'm sure Selmon is not that stupid.

So, we go 4-8 or 5-7, which is where this is headed. It's sheer stupidity to fire the coach?
I dont think we will do that bad but I also dont think replacing the coach is gonna improve anything. We need to keep building on what we have. Who is gonna come coach here ? You kicking in an extra 5 million to overpay ?

Yes. No new AD in America would fire a national title winning head coach - the only one in the schools history - a few months into the job. We got some juice after Lemonis got fired and made a run to the post season.

That's right, you don't make that move. Baseball ended up working out fine.

He should've been fired a year earlier. This isn't even a debatable point. That the timing allowed us to luck up and have Oak fall into our lap doesn't make it better. The fact that he waited a year too long to can Lemonis is a demerit on his resume. If he's as good as some of you think, he could've fired him when he should have and saved us another year of sunk cost with lardass, and gone out and fought for and won Oak a year earlier.

It never ceases to amaze me how easily this fan base is willing to accept mediocrity. Hell, we lean into it.

Selmon got extremely lucky with the baseball situation.

Is this talent and depth in the room with us right now?
State's football team is indeed more talented, with more depth than last year. Of course, this is on paper, & there's no point in debating it until we see some results one way or the other.

We have one of the best coaches in the country in baseball. I realize our culture & tradition had a lot to do with that, but Selmon gets that credit, regardless of how we got him & I'm grateful we have Oak.

That doesn't mean I'm completely satisfied with our athletic dept but landing Oak was huge & if the football team can win more than they lose this year, I'll be a bit more satisfied. Like I said, this year is a wait & see approach. I'm choosing to be cautiously optimistic, with no expectations, but if no more than 5 wins, I'll buy the pitchforks, & join in.

This is the same group that wanted Dan fired cause he was always looking for a job and wanted Leach ran off cause they didn't like his offense. Patience is a virtue. Buying players is more important than your coach these days. You know, unless you are smart.enough to.hire Cignetti.

Actually, the pro-Lebby crowd is mostly the same as the anti-Leach crowd. Not exactly 1:1, but the biggest anti-Leachers tend to be the biggest Lebby deadenders.

Anyhow, I don't think expecting Lebby to get his SEC record up to 4-21 by the end of this year in order to keep his job is asking too much. No one would blame us for moving on if he can't even hit that incredibly low bar.

I don’t know about that, buying players is more important than your coach ? See jimbo fisher and a lengthy list of awful coaches who couldn’t win the SWAC with the 85 Bears.
You have to have a coach who knows what players to buy and what system to put them in.

This whole "Lebby being 1-15 is OK because coaching doesn't matter" would be a bad argument with plenty of counterexamples, even in a world where Lebby's poor coaching decisions didn't cause us multiple games last year.

In a world where we are at a permanent financial disadvantage, having a good "gameday coach" who can steal a win or two every year by out-scheming becomes the most important quality we should look for in a coach, and Lebby is the complete and total opposite of that.

I heard you say "It would be sheer stupidity to fire Lebby after this season," and "I also dont think replacing the coach is gonna improve anything. We need to keep building on what we have," so that's a striking vote of confidence for Coach 1-15.

And even when asked if you would change your mind if we go 4-8 or 5-7, you said no, which means that 3-22 or even 2-23 is OK in your book.

Exactly right regarding player development and Xs and Os, knowing how to build a roster and knowing how to run a program, if you are a school that is one of the poors, or not ultra wealthy.

all of those qualities are apparently trumped by kissing Booster Arse.

i will say, Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, just put seven players in the nfl this year and has put over 100 in the nfl in his career. He’s doing that mostly with three stars from small towns in his state of 3 million. So it can be done.

Using the term demerit is hilarious. Haven’t heard that word used since elementary school.

“should we hire Zach selmon?”

“I don’t know. Not firing a national title coach a few months into the job is a huge demerit.”

I guess you guys are right. We should just fire our coach every year until we find one that goes 10 and 2. Typical knee jerk reactions. If you cant see things are improving, albeit slowly, you should probly not be a fan. At least of MSU. Maybe jump to Ohio State. Winning is expected there. 8 and 4 is miraculous with us. 10 and 2 gets a statue.

This is such a bad strawman. There's no way you interpret a comment like "he needs to get to 6-6 by his third year" or "he needs to at least be 4-21 in SEC games after 3 years" to be equivalent to demanding he go 10-2.

Face it, if Lebby has another losing season, there's no denying that he's a bad coach and below "replacement level."

We will know pretty quick this year. So now you are saying keep him at 6 and 6 ? State fans are so silly. Fahr the corch !! We all wish things were happening quicker but things are improving. Its a brutal schedule but it is every year. Replacing the coach every other year won't fix things any quicker. If he goes 6 and 6 that would be the typical Miss State football coach.

1-15. That's your favorite coach's conference record currently. You call that "improving?" Spoiler alert: we likely won't be favored in a single SEC game this year. Let's say we win two. That's 5-7 (2-7), assuming we beat Minnesota. That's 3-22 vs the SEC.

Facts are inconvenient things sometimes.

Unfortunately we aren't competing against last year's team. We still have the worst talent and depth in a 16 team league. Everyone else is working to get better every year too.

Favorite coach ??? You are smarter than that Frank. I think we will do better than that. I was against hiring Lebby but he is our guy now and I think we need some stability for another couple years. Improving isn't looking backwards. I think this team is gonna be better than 2025 which was better than 2024. Cutting bait now would be starting all over. We aint hiring a Cignetti

I admit that I go to elitedawgs from time to time for a good laugh. The rumor over there is that the entire football staff has been informed that its 7 wins or everybody will be fired. If that isn't enough for you, Tom Herman and Scott Frost has reached out for the job if it comes open. We can't even make it to the first game without the rumors mill starting.
Scott Frost.........Good Lord! (apologize for using the Lord's name in vain)

I've always said that 6-6 probably earns Lebby another year, although it would depend on how the wins and losses went down, and what our strength of schedule turns out to be.

I also generally agree that we need stability, but the evidence we have tells us that Lebby is a below average coach, and yet another losing season would confirm it. There's no value in stability when the coach is bad. Imagine if Joe Moorhead was still our coach - would that stability be worth it? Now imagine it's November 2026 and we have a coach with less than half of Moorhead's SEC win total in 3 years rather than 2.

Everyone wants stability. It's important. But just as important is what is being stabilized. Over the years there's been so many completely idiotic things said from some of our fans for why we couldn't fire Croom, or Ray, or Moorhead, and now Lebby. "We need stability." "Nobody will take the job if we're constantly firing coaches." Well if we continue to keep Lebby around there will be plenty of stability but it won't be the good kind. And all of this funding is going to dry up because people won't keep shoveling money into an endless pit of incompetence.

In hindsight, he is right. Lem should have been fired a season or so earlier for sure. But at that time, I don't think Oak would have made the jump from UVA and we'd have someone else. Taking all things into consideration, I think the rough Lem years, as bad as they were, were worth being where we are today.
