When he went to A&M he showed he wasn’t afraid to spend money of course I don’t want to get into how more money A&M had over Nebraska, but you get the picture..
Would love, love, love Matta if his health allows it. Think he'd be a great fit.
Another thing to remember is Matta is very close with Barry Collier, played for and coached under him at Butler. I'm guessing Barry would advise him not to take this job.
He had a pretty good stretch at Butler prior to coming to Neb. Then he tanked at neb. Overall he was still just over a .500 career coach. We need to stop hiring these type of guys. If anything Nebraska should have learned is that if a coach is a . 500 career coach prior to coming the Neb odds are they will continue to be a . 500 coach or worse here. We need to dish out the money and go after a proven, tournament experienced coach. Not saying it is realistic or that any coach with that resume will come here, but if we want any chance of Neb to be a competent basketball program we need to try something different than what we have done in the past.
"Well Barry, are you gonna pay me $3M to NOT coach in the BIG?" You're probably right, but what does Collier really know about the job at this point anyway? All facilities vastly upgraded, funding upgraded, the rest of it Matta can see for himself better than Collier would know.
Matta gets paid almost $2 million next year from Ohio State if he doesn't coach next year. So I personally don't see him coaching next year unless it's somewhere he can win right away. I don't think he has the energy to try and build here with the crap roster he would inherit.
He'll likely return to coaching in 2020 when his buyout ends.
Maybe Matta's a super-duper nice guy like Mike Riley and would coach the Huskers next year for $50,001? Winking

This was an interesting article on Matta's mindset, sure sounds like Harry is right that he's not itching for a job. Funny that it mentions that he has to seek comparable employment to get his OSU severance (like Riley) and the author basically says that's boilerplate that no one really cares about. Unlike everyone here who can't sleep because Riley got paid.

I don't mind that Riley got paid. I just would have cut the payments by about $200K after Oregon State announced that he was coming back to be an assistant head coach at a receptionist's salary. It was a complete asshat move on Oregon State's part.
I believe you are right. It would take a hell of an ego override to beat out the 2 million reasons to not take a job.
At the time, Collier looked like a really good hire. What hiring a guy like Collier doesn't account for though is their ability to recruit to NU and you never really know for sure until they have to do it.
All of these names. The best take I've heard on who Moos might hire was a guy who was an assistant at Oregon when Moos was there. Unfortunately his name escapes me right now.
I was thinking it was somebody else, but now that I look at his bio he was an assistant at Oregon so that must be it. LOTS of reasons for him to want to come to NU and there's smoke there.
Why? That was like 20 years ago...Matta is a grown man and has accomplished more than Barry ever has...Everyone that Barry knew (except maybe that Marc B cat) is new.
The guy has a history of success everywhere he has been. Has shown to be able to put teams in the tourney. Proven he can get in done in the BIG10. My only concern would be can he recruit to Lincoln. That isn't a knock on him but more so any coach that would come here. Location is a challenge no doubt. Football at least has a historic past to try and draw recruits here. Basketball has nothing.
He totally fades near the end of the season (or so it seems like) but in the end he would be an A+ hire and steal.
Rass will do all he can to pretend like this is not going on...he seems to think he is the AD at Kansas not Creighton. The NCAA will crucify a school like CU if it wants.

Doesn't make any sense to me. McDermott can coach, dude is a field general and runs a varied attack of offensive sets. I'd take him in a heartbeat. Although I will admit his teams play defense like it's the NBA all star game.
Right there with you. I like the guy. There's a vocal group who feels the program has topped out where he can take it. Not sure I believe that. Just like Nebraska every one of their conference opponents have a better local recruiting base to draw from.
I’m in between on McDermott. He gets good but not great talent, and his teams play up to or slightly above that talent level. Though I realize there’s a hard-and-fast rule here that if you enjoy watching Creighton and haven’t convinced yourself that they’re terrible, you’re really just a delusional fanboy and closet Jaysker.
Creighton will never be Villanova or Georgetown like some people aspire it to be. But they can easily be a perennial top 25 team and make it to the 2nd weekend of the dance every once and awhile. McDermott can do that for them.
One of the big reasons Gonzaga is so good is because of the great recruiting job by Assistant Coach Tommy Lloyd. Mark Few is a great coach and players love him, but it is Lloyd who gets Few the players.

Plenty of coaches have risen from these ranks to build powerhouses. Three unsuccessful hires should not steer Moos away from mid-majors looking for a chance to establish themselves in a P5 conference.

It may surprise you to know while the best coaches in the country may pay their bills with their university salaries, they buy their 2nd/3rd homes and retire from benefits companies like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour and myriad development programs provide.
$5M at Nebraska is *not* the same as $5M at a traditional basketball school.

Back to the subject at hand, NU has a chance to offer a mid-major coach on the rise the chance to ride the Coach Frost/football renaissance wave & it'd be foolish to pursue Bruce Weber or someone similar, given its shortcomings compared to their current respective programs, instead.
The Buffalo coach would be a huge get IMO.
