Same, but what choice do we have?If we go the mid major route again, we may as well just keep Miles.
Same, but what choice do we have?
Mata Sampson Petino Hoiberg Altman Pearl Weber
No, we made pretty big statement on SF's contract. As in we aren't fing around.Would you be ok with the basketball coach having a larger contract than the football coach?

From everything I have heard, from one pretty connected booster, and from what I have seen from Chris Heady and Sipple, we will not be going after a mid major coach, it's power 5 experienced coach or bust. Miles, Doc, and Collier were all mid major coaches. That avenue has been proven to not be effective here. We are now full B1G members and can easily pony up top 20 to top 10 money for a coach. With us paying more than $2.6 Million, (which is only 300K more than we are paying Miles) we will join 6 other B1G members in the top 20 of highest paid coaches. What's a list of names of coaches, that would make sense for Nebraska?
Will Nebraska be willing to pay more for a basketball coach, or will we end up with a mid-major coach again?

Need a recruiter.
Talent wins games no master your x's and o's.
Yep. I would be surprised if the next coach makes less than 3.5 more realistically $4 million. Considering Moos is a massive spender I may be more.I think they will need to be around 4mm. Nebraska doesn't have anything more to offer than any other power five. In most cases, Nebraska has much less to offer a basketball coach. Nebraska will have to offer a long contract and take a risk, in order for an established coach to take a chance on Nebraska imo.
Big names:
Hioberg- He's been my #1 hope long before he parted ways with the Bulls. Still afraid he will have better options.
Matta- available now, knows the Big 10, has something to prove. Only 51 years old I believe.
Mick Cronin- (Cincinnati)- No one is talking about him. He's never won less than 22 games at UC while a member of the ACC. He probably won't take the job as he has joint custody of his daughter and ex lives there too. His daughter is very important to him.
Kevin Ollie- Has a national championship. African American. Has something to prove. East coast and west coast ties. Yes he has a potential show cause hearing (what's worse a show cause hearing or coaching basketball at Nebraska?). Probably no way in hell his agent even gets a call.
Petino- Can't see the Nebraska administration allowing that to happen. He's 66 years old and looking more and more like Emperor Palpatine every day. If he were 56, maybe I'd have a different opinion, but I'd pass.
Turgeon- Maybe he'd take it since his dad lives in Lincoln. As of today I'd be underwhelmed with him as a hire, and would probably prefer giving one of my 3 listed mid major guys the job.
Altman- Until it happens, I still think that ship sailed a long time ago.
Sampson- He's in the 5th largest metro area in the country, he's already done the Big 10 thing and he's 63 years old. I wonder if he's happy right where he's at?
Pearl/Webber- Just don't see them leaving their present jobs to come here. JMHO. Pearl doesn't seem to be a culture fit, but neither was Nee.
Marshall- No thanks, he probably missed his chance at a bigger program and should have left after making the final 4. He's got one of the top prep schools in his back yard.
Lue- Ain't coming here.
Mid Majors: If we have to go this route, here's some I could see making sense.
Oats- Seems to be able to recruit nationally. That's big to succeed here.
Craig Smith- Man he can coach.
TJ Otzelberger- I think he's a really good coach, but he has had Mike Daum on his roster all 3 years of his head coaching career. Hmm.
Darian DeVries- First year at Drake, they are tied for first in the Valley. McDermott never lost to Nebraska at Creighton until he left. Doubt he's on Moos radar.
Porter Moser- Creighton Grad. Made the Final 4 last year. Ties to Chicago.
Dark Horse:
He'll never get the HC job ( don't think he has a degree) but can the next guy hire him as an assistant?
Dwayne Wade!!!!!!

That's a good list. I think you gotta add Buzz Williams to it too. Makes $2.6 at Va Tech, we'd probably have to pay him $5 Million. But I think he'd be worth it.

Will Nebraska be willing to pay more for a basketball coach, or will we end up with a mid-major coach again?
Ferentz gets a bonus for 8 wins.
If it were me I would go with a base of like 2.5 or 3 and load up bonuses like 250k for an NCAA appearance, 500k for consecutive appearances, 50k for each tournament win. Something for graduation rate to be PC. Same for assistants.
most of the contracts I have seen sets out $x for assistants. For me I would expand that and spell out what the salary cap and outline the bonuses. Maybe include overall x years coaching at power 5 conferences.I like that. I thought coaches contracts were going that way, but coaches control the market because really good ones are scarce. Money has to be guaranteed.
Ty Lue is about to get hired by the Lakers for $8 to $10 Million a year. He has never really cared about Nebraska, and probably cares even less because we as a program ignored him for 25 years, I imagine if Moos called him he was cordial and politely told him no thank you but that's about all we're getting from him. Hoiberg is a possibility.Still think it will be Lue or Hoiberg.
Still think it will be Lue or Hoiberg.
I could be and probably will be wrong but we have been down this road many times before and Nebraska has never, ever, EVER, spent money to hire nor have they hired a top 20 proven head basketball coach. What makes everyone think they will do it this time?
I just don't see it.

It would be foolish not too. Who supports their teams like Husker fans?
Matt Weber has a lot of interesting middle names.Mata Sampson Petino Hoiberg Altman Pearl Weber
Agree, The mid major route has proven to be ineffective here. IF..... we want Nebraska to try and become a competent basketball school I think we have to try and snag a proven p5 coach. I don't know who that would be, but I have a feeling Moos isn't going to screw this up. He has shown he isn't afraid to put up big money to get who he wants. If we go the mid major route again, we may as well just keep Miles.

Like a lot of other people, I was surprised when Williams left Marquette for Va Tech. My guess is that coaching in the ACC was the big draw, as he was only one year removed from taking Marquette to the Elite Eight. Not sure he would leave the ACC for Nebraska, but agree that it's definitely worth a try. Matta would be a home run hire if he's looking to return.Buzz Williams would be an amazing hire and you can make an argument that NU would be a great fit but I am not sure he leaves VT just yet, but I would call.
You guys (The Bo haters, so not all of you) would hate Cronin.) So I would take him off the list right now for most of you.
Matta would be the same as Buzz, an amazing hire. He is only 51 and sort of from the area and would probably like coaching in a place where he is appreciated and not treated like a foster kid. He would also love to stick it to OSU.
The Asst Coach from UK, Payne, he could be s star.
Well, rumor has it he left Marq for two reasons. Admins and possible violations.Like a lot of other people, I was surprised when Williams left Marquette for Va Tech. Possible. Not sure he has enough of a proven background of success. Yes he can make it to the NIT almost every year but has only made it to the Dance once in his 11 years.Think there are better options, if they all turn us down they sure, if would be better than Miles. I think he is getting paid around 1 Million from UCF. So if we doubled it I bet we could get him to come. Plus the satisfaction of taking another coach from UCF might just be worth it. lolWould we steal from UCF again and hire Johnny Dawkins? He's turned UCF around, and took Stanford to a Sweet 16. He's a Coach K disciple. UCF looked good against Houston on the road last weekend.
Dawkins might also want to stay one more year to coach is son as a senior. Aubrey Dawkins already sat out as a transfer and as a medical redshirt, so he can't really follow him to another program. Maybe he could get a 6th year as a grad transfer, but I don't think it works that way.Possible. Not sure he has enough of a proven background of success. We have never had a competent AD who is willing to spend money.
He hired Collier. I don't know much about him or how much he was paid.Bill Byrne was never afraid to spend money at the time he was the AD..
