Nivar 17pts-4rebs-3assists
Elina 16pts-3rebs-2assists
Ciera- 10pts-8rebs

We won the rebounds 31 to 30
80% from line
18% from 3
20 TO's to 8

TO's in the half court killed us plus 18% from 3.

I think I would work on some backdoor cuts to defeat the overplaying/fouling defense
Great post but I will add one caveat: a handful of those three point attempts were not good shots. I remember at least three that were dying shot clock heaves. I also remember a pretty deep attempt from Grant, which she takes from time-to-time but rarely makes.

We were 2 of 11 on threes overall. Take away the 3 dying clock attempts and that is 2 of 8 or 25%. Still not good but at least reasonable. Regardless, we did not make a single trey in the 2nd half. To that end, TX had a really impressive perimeter defense. We were rarely open for shots and rarely able to make the passes we wanted.

The rebounding is surprising. It did not feel even in rebounds but clearly it was. TX was slightly ahead 13-10 on Off rebounds.

Yep... I'm sure I misremembered some of them, but it seemed like Texas got at least 3 shots on a single possession several times last night.

We can and I think will shoot better from 3.

I think we are a good 3pt shooting team when in rhythm

I think it would help us to be able to spot up and make some mid range shots like Texas did if the 3's are overplayed.

R Kelly’s lack of results & premium play is hurting us. Potential First Team All Conference, fringe AA, playing extremely poorly.
R Kelly: due to injuries she no longer has that quick first step. At this time she is no longer able to get by her defender. So far this year she has not had a good game. Her minutes have to be cut until she proves that she is ready and healthy enough to play at a high level. Last year before her injuries she was one of the very best players in the country. Sadly she is in a sport that positive results are needed from her to continue get meaningful minutes. I wish her nothing but the best.

I was looking back at the box score-- and obviously turnovers were the name of the game and the deciding factor leading to separation mid-way through the 3Q.... but everything else showed progress from the UCLA game. We did a lot of really, really good things vs a top opponent that we haven't done the past couple year. We got sped up some at times, turned the ball over, and lead to some easy buckets.

  1. Shot 47% from the floor on the road at Texas (Texas was holding teams to 36%). I believe Texas leads the country at 52% from the field (could be wrong)- they shot 52%
  2. We scored 40 points in the paint; Texas 30 (+10 vs the #2 ranked team is impressive)
  3. 16-20 from the line (80%!); TX 17-21
  4. 5 blks vs 6 blks
  5. 11 fast break points for us vs just 8 for them
  6. The biggest improvement to me.... rebounding. We outrebounded them 31-30. That has not happened vs a Top 5 team in idk when. You rebound the ball well, you take care of the ball-- you put yourself in a spot to win. We did one of those- we are going to do both in March.
  7. We allowed 6 FGs Q1, 7 FGs Q2, and 6 FGs Q4- 10 in Q3 when we had a stretch of missed opportunities.
  8. They lead 15-10 in 2nd chance points- you will take that vs the #2 team in the country.
  9. A 17-10 disadvantage in fouls with 8 min to go is not ideal when you're 10+ points in the paint vs them and not jacking up or settling for 3s.

The two glaring negatives:
  1. Turnovers: 20-8
  2. Pts off TOs 24-7
Those 2 things are the difference maker.

Bottom line is... the team is getting better and improving.... with each game. We are young. We are talented. And we are going to continue to grow through ACC play.

great stuff.

to me the three key differences were:
  • turnover differential/points off turnovers - you already covered this
  • 3pt shooting differential - 4 of 9 (44%) them vs 2 of 11 (18%) us
  • TX perimeter defense - they pressured the ball and filled the passing lanes. Early in the game we combatted with dribble penetration for easy shots. But that dried up and we were out of sorts for the rest of the game with no offensive flow.
The 17 pt differential was basically the margin in this game. the 6 pt differential on made 3's may have put us over the top.

But I will add a huge caveat that they took their foot off the gas in the last 3 minutes. We were down 24 points with 3:03 left, but we outscored them 10-1 over that 3:03 span. They did not insert any scrubs or anything, it just felt like their defensive intensity dropped off.

We scored just 8 pts in the first 7 min of Q4 but then 10 pts in the last 3. Conversely, they were well on pace for their 3rd 20+ pt quarter in a row (15 points in 7 min) before just holding the ball and not really running offense.

We turned a blowout loss where no stats can make you feel better to just a sound beating.

Ofc a loss is frustrating and has people questioning CB- however this is probably her best team talent wise. CT, Indya, Laila, Lanie are all better. Nyla H was a huge pickup, Nyla B is going to be a superstar but she’s also a freshman. We’re young isn’t much of an excuse but more a fact. Come Feb/March madness time, this team will click and perform a lot better than we did in game #3 vs UCLA or @ Texas less than a month into the season. An win against either would have been a huge upset given our personnel against their. Both of those teams are filled with McDonald’s AA, Juniors, Seniors and have final four/deep tournament run experience. I had high hopes for both games but wasn’t expecting us to win… cb will always say these early games against tough teams are litmus tests to see what they need to tweak before ACC play. There’s so much upside especially getting good early starts in both games- we just need a full 40 minutes. I hope everyone on this board realizes how much production we actually lost. Lexi, Maria and Lys usually played what 35-40 minutes a game? We truly have a new new look team and all mostly underclassmen. Nyla H is a senior but new to the team. Indya is really the only returning player that gave us significant production last year- and has upped it this year. Yes we returned Reniya too but she hasn’t looked to form and most of our Fr/So look better and more ready. I’m all bought into this program and Coach Banghart’s vision. If you take a look around the country and good teams and how long those coaches have been coaching in college but also with spec teams, their trajectory is right where it should be:
Vic Shaefer- 65 years old, Miss State & Texas
Kim Mulkey- 63 years old, Baylor & LSU
Geno- enough said
Dawn- Temple & SC - didn’t get SC to FF until year 7(?)
Cori Close- didn’t get UCLA to FF until year 14 there

It just takes time people. CB is 47 years old and is at her first P5 job in year 7 with a program that had ZERO national attention before she got here. Two sweet 16’s and I feel us just knocking on that door to the EE/FF. I’m happy with what she’s done, even just getting the fans engaged more. So be upset at a loss and ask for her credibility, but don’t discount the process it takes because every coach that has an elite program also had growing pains (maybe minus Geno lol) GO HEELS

Another point to add to the above is that the program is getting attention from a lot of the highly rated players in HS, they are taking notice of what's happening with CB and UNC. The future is bright and a FF is not far away.
