We did not handle the Texas size and “physicality” well tonight. They finally got us in a half court game and we had no chance then. I would love to have seen attempt to press, trap, zone something even as good as Harmon is. Move on.

turnovers were the biggest key to this loss.

UNC - 20
TX - 8

TX was +17 on points off turnovers. That is the ballgame.

Nivar and Aarnisalo looked like they could hang with TX. Toomey was reasonably close. On this night at least, the rest of our team was significantly outplayed at their position and/or faded into the woodwork.

CB talking to Matt after the game basically saying they are a great defensive team but when allowed to get away with that much ”physicality“ and use of hands we couldn’t generate any ball movement and wore down.

So much with this game. A lot to be encouraged by but a lot that I hope we don’t see again (unforced turnovers namely). I remain encouraged though. Texas’s top 7 players are on par and probably more consistent than any other 7 in the country right now. Our team this year also has the highest ceiling of any recent team we’ve had.

But what I struggle to understand is our approach to offense (play calls, lineups, and tactics) when we get bogged down and start digging ourselves into a hole. Early in the game we clearly had success getting to the rim, so I get wanting to keep trying that, especially when we also clearly struggled shooting it. But it’s very frustrating to see them just forcing the same things over and over when it’s stopped working and not trying to change things up to find a new rhythm.

So many plays where we’d just drive and try to force it to the rim for a contested layup or would get stuck and not be able to pass it out. It’s like we forgot about a floater or a jump stop and pull up in the lane (see Jordan lee’s short 2’s she drained). And we got very scared to shoot it from outside. I get that but we need to stay confident and keep shooting it like the next one is going in to get back on a streak.

Hard to know but it’s hard to see much by way of in game adjustments aside from what happens at halftime (which is often effective against lesser opponents). Or if there are adjustments being called out, it’s not anything that works well enough to revive the offense and pull them back in a game like this. This has always been the case against top teams and why I think we haven’t had that breakthrough yet.

Also think we get in our head too much with what seems like a lot of prep/focus on specific offensive tactics designed for top opponents like this going into the game. I’m all for a good amount of prep but wondering if we might be overdoing it which takes us out of the usual free flowing game that we typically play. You can feel how bad we want to win a big game, but that pressure we put on ourselves is heavy and can’t help.

Let’s get back to playing freely, making plays in rhythm and having fun!

Like you I thought we almost became afraid to take 3’s as the game went on. E passed up a wide open shot from the top of the key. That old football saying ‘fatigue makes cowards of us all” may appply. When you are getting pushed, shoved, grabbed by players as big and strong as TX that’s got to wear you down. And that’s why TX is #2 and maybe should be #1.

I can't remember the last time we got a ranked win on the road
Not sure if Louisville was ranked last year when we beat them on the road but that was a great team.

Beat several ranked teams on a neutral court last year too.

Question - As a casual observer, I’ve seen the women’s team get blitzed by better teams for a few years.

My question is…. Is there hope to be had under Courtney Banghart or is she the kind of coach that will only get you so far??

I think it’s a fair question and I think the answer is that we’ll all have a good idea after this season. Maybe not a final answer but a better one no doubt.

The topic was addressed last year on here and folks said it was too soon and that we needed to wait til this year to make a conclusion. I tend to agree but think we had some strong data prior to this year that informs us. Namely a comparison with other coaches that have had teams with similar talent levels, new players and injuries each of the last few years.

With Kate coming in and most of the key players returning from this team, we’ll see next year how far we can ago.

As for getting blitzed by better teams, we’re a top 15 team, they’re a top 3 team. You rarely see upsets of that nature in the college game, especially on the road.

We have got to improve our passing in the half court.

Texars took the ball away a lot after we got the ball in the half court.

We need to rebound better also. Better boxouts.

We are young, we will get better.

I would give T Henderson more time. Athletes with size win hard rebounds and loose balls.

Texas just beat UCLA with Betts and SC at a neutral site and we got them at their home court. I was hoping we would win but they are a much better team. Clearly not a referendum-making loss.

depends on what you consider acceptable. If you are good with a top 25 team who will ocassionally do a little more we are clearly already there.

If your question is: when will we be as good as UConn, TX and UofSC? I think the answer is not until:

A) we can recruit at their level consistently most every year. That probably will not happen. Especially in the player compensation era. Or
B) we construct a perennial top 15 program and occasionally capture lightning in a bottle with a couple of A-A level players. I think we have recently reached that top 15 level and are waiting to hit On a star or two. There is no way of knowing whether that will happen or not.

Banghart has proven she can recruit and she can coach defense. To me those are necessary traits that most coaches do not have. Her teams now have excellent locker room culture; that was not always the case. and personally I still see a clear upward trajectory.

You can get as mad at me as you like but our ladies had no chance tonight. They were playing 5 on 8 from the start of the second quarter.

Our players were hacked with no calls and theirs were given "bail out" calls on numerous occasions.

Almost like someone "got the message" between the first and second quarters.

That being said, we needed to take the ball at #35 more often. She's a great player but she doesn't move as well laterally and our PG was able to draw fouls on her early then just stopped driving on her.

We also made too many unforced errors so it wasn't all on the rayufs!

Without SEC type money our ceiling resides below all of those type teams. UConn may be an exception but their cache is enough to attract players. Some of the posters who have come over here tonight to trash the coaches can be found on every other thread they participate in doing the exact same thing. FB, MBB, whatever. Makes you question the intent doesn’t it?

We just need to improve our ball handling skills , Rebounding the ball , and learning how to deal with pressure defense on the ball when being guarded. Play you Henderson and Hull a lot more. Bianca Thomas need to get in shape.

Both our basketball teams enter games with coaching deficits. It's a wonder we win as much as we do. At least we have some talent, but neither program will win big consistently until coaches are changed.

Strongly disagree that CB presents a coaching deficit. She consistently churns out top level defense regardless of the personnel. The vast majority of teams that beat us have more talent than we do.

That is like saying Tony Bennet was a poor coach. You may not like that product but it is undeniably getting more from less.

If the outcomes on the court do not match your expectations then sure, that falls on the coach. She is ultimately responsible for the personnel and how they perform. Full stop.

But if you watch UNC play and conclude that the coach on the sideline is hapless, then I am not sure what you are seeing. Her peers awarded her National Coach of the Year and later elected her the WBCA president for a reason.

Been absent for sometime once On3 rivals took over, but in regards to the women's team, and CB. The foundation is being laid for this team to be a consistent top ten team. With regards to CB, she has demonstrated that she can recruit and develop talent. After watching the Texas game last night, the one flaw that kept UNC from making this a closer game were the 20 T'O to Texas 8. All the other statistic were close, including rebounding, was surprise to see UNC making 16 of 20 FT's, let hope they can continue to carry this over into the ACC season.. Also, remember this is a very young team, been stated they are the 7th youngest team in major women college basketball.

Anyone who has followed the career of Nivar since she cane back can see irrefutable evidence of a coaching staff developing players. Anyone following UNC WBB under CB can see good defensive teams year after year no matter who the players are. The one area we have struggled with at times has been half court offense. And when you get into a situation where you have to create a shot against a good, set defense, you need those players who can just go one vs one and create their own shot. We have had some of those players but not a lot. We are getting there and if we could just get fully healthy this year I think you will see a really difficult to beat team. I don‘t think this team needs new coaching. I think it needs some of those who are always complaining to contribute more money to WBB if they truly care. We may have gotten a commitment from Borg if they had.

I love what Coach CB is building. We are the 8th youngest team in WCBB this season. Some players like
Arnisalo, Toomey, Brooks, Thomas and Henderson have huge futures in front of them and they are all young.
Kate Harpring and Noelle Bofia arriving next year and we should have a great base rotation.

We will get better and better this season. I think we will be in the hunt for an ACC championship this year.
I think we will host again. I think we have a shot at the Elite 8 maybe final 4 if things go well with our ball handling, rebounding and shooting..

Texas served up some serious home cooking with the ref's. Go back and watch the film. I have to wonder if the big SEC and Texas pocketbooks don't come into play in games like this. It has to happen sometimes sadly. We all say the officials are all above it but things sure changed from the 1st quarter on with the way that game was called.

We had a stretch of a missed lay-up, transition ball thrown 6 inches too far preventing an open lay-up, a .5 second away from a lay-up counting in transition & getting the ball back with a blocking foul. Came up empty each trip- would’ve been 5-7 or game with just a couple min left in Q3 and still in the game

ESPN basically has an iso cam on the Texas coach and have mentioned him by name well over a dozen times. Meanwhile you would think UNC brought their club team with no coach.
That’s why we sync the ESPN broadcast up with Matt Krause on either Chapelboro.com or the Varsity Network when we can. Much rather listen to nothing than ESPN announcers.

Mack and Courtney were great friends in Chapel Hill. Mack was a frequent attender at many UNC games.

Nivar 17pts-4rebs-3assists
Elina 16pts-3rebs-2assists
Ciera- 10pts-8rebs

We won the rebounds 31 to 30
80% from line
18% from 3
20 TO's to 8

TO's in the half court killed us plus 18% from 3.

I think I would work on some backdoor cuts to defeat the overplaying/fouling defense
