I’m 35 years old and grew up on Rutgers football with Greg Schiano. My family and I have had season tix and tailgate just about every game since 2004. Live it, eat it, breathe it. Today we brought my 5 month old daughter to her first Rutgers Football game, and it brought back memories to when I was a kid watching Schiano take on the Miami Hurricanes

We won a grand total of 3 games in the 2 years prior to Schiano’s return, and we went winless in the Big 10 2 years in a row…. We were losing recruits to Temple ….. Easy to forget just how bad things were when he took over in 2020…. My Rutgers football fandom was really waning until his return.

Progress is never linear like people want it to be but since he’s been back we’ve been trending up. Greg’s had to deal with pathetic leadership above him (Hobbs), severe lack of resources, and is only just finally getting real leadership from above.

UMass was a bad loss. UMass played lights out but no excuse to lose that game. BC is a game we should have won on paper but our QB play was really bad and have to give credit to their QB who made plays. Super easy for recency bias to say “hey we suck fire the coach” but to me it’s a truly weak take.

We need to get better. QB play has been well below where it needs to be, and our defense showed some flashes today but needs to be way more consistent.

Give Schiano another year in the portal with continuity of staff, real NIL backing, and alignment from above, and let’s see what he can do.

The anti-Schiano mob has been coming for Greg for years and just been waiting for the right opportunity to pounce. It feels like we’re nearing a tipping point…. And I hate to say it but if Greg goes, I go too. I stand with Greg

Well Greg is a National champ coordinator, that’s the point. I don’t think we’re finding another coach who’s had first hand experience recruiting/coaching with Urban Meyer, and scheming up defenses with Bill Belichick…..

To be over .500 in Big 10 you have to beat 5 of these 9…..
USC, Indiana, Maryland, Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan State….

So let’s say we play go a perfect 4-for-4 and beat Maryland, Northwestern, Nebraska, Michigan State….no hiccups.

After going perfect against them, now you still have to pick off one of USC, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State…. a reasonable goal to have… but given where our program was just a short time ago… also reasonable that it hasn’t happened yet

Jim Knowles won a NC as DC at OSU. He also has a losing record as a HC at Cornell. You want to hire him?

Ok I was following your train of thought until you said Zinn gave greg every chance this year, when we’re only 3 games into the season… Yes UMass was a bad loss. BC we had our backup first time qb in and he just didn’t have it. We’re 0-1 in conference play and that only loss is to USC who was supposed to blow our doors off and we lost by 7, with multiple chances to win the game if our qb played competently. Give the guy a fair shake at competing with NIL, if he still doesn’t cut it move on… but you have to give him a fair shake at it

All he had to do was beat the team you paid half their NIL budget to just to come here and lose. He didn’t. Then he didn’t beat one of the p4 teams we have more NIL than. Stop with the backup QB excuse, kids been in the system for how long? And he started because Lonergan played that bad. Who’s to say AJ was even the backup. Chances blown.

This wasn’t where we went wrong. OL looked better yesterday but what it was vs UMass is inexcusable. No QB is going to have a good game when a team only rushes for 30 net yards. Waiting to hire a DC also inexcusable and why the D is as bad as last year. These are big Greg issues.

Having said this - we’re still better off in the long run winning more games than less this year. Greg would have to get to 5 to have any real chance of getting retained (and still very doubtful at 5) - and going 5-4 the rest of the way is a major long shot. But each game that he shows life allows us to get closer to getting through the season. Removing him right now is not suddenly making this team better. Zinn is in a better position if he wins more in my opinion because when she shops the field then she can at least play it like waiting it out could be possible if she doesn’t find what she wants. Desperate is never a better thing. Just my opinion anyway.

Brian, thank you for all you did for Rutgers Football! I am a Schiano man too but we cannot lose to teams like UMASS and BC. As much as I love Greg for what he has done for Rutgers football, playing like we did those first two games does a lot of damage to the psyche of the fanbase.
I will admit they looked supremely better today than they have all season and you are right if we have an upset or two in our favor my opinion can change. Today was a good start in that direction.

Has NOT accomplished what he promised-bring championships to Rutgers---not even close, finishing highest of 5th in East when divisions were in place and 9th and tied for 14th in years 5 and 6. We have a saying in our office- better to under promise and over deliver than to over promise and under deliver.

Took full advantage of AD office being empty, loading up on auxiliary staff positions, including his three sons, raising the level of spending into the top 4 of B1G schools without anything to show for it.

Too many boneheaded game day decisions resulting in losses that have been detailed elsewhere.

Small quibble about "better luck in the portal"--no, better evaluation of portal targets. Maybe the real problem was poor evaluation and an unwillingness of players to come to Rutgers.

Why not give him the NIL support to see whether he makes sense in the NIL era. Kelly was on track to do that before UMass. Bring in a GM with NFL experience to oversee the portal. This Halfassed nonsense we’re currently doing isn’t working. We need to get serious. Next year, all the portal developmental kids we landed will be ready to go, especially the QB. This year, they’re acclimating.

Why not give Schiano enough NIL to see whether he can make it. Kelly was on track to do this before UMass. He’s been operating with 1 hand tied behind his back. We took too many developmental kids who should be ready next year. A GM with NFL experience would improve our portal outcomes.
