Jim Knowles won a NC as DC at OSU. He also has a losing record as a HC at Cornell. You want to hire him?
Schiano OSU as DC had the worst statistical season in OSU history with Young and Bosa on the team. Greg is trash at everything.

There are levels in sports and Greggy’s is not power 4 football

OP - what are you going to have to say when Indiana absolutely humiliates us on homecoming in front of a stadium that’s half filled with their fans? With an empty student end zone by halftime?

* It's not about right now.

There are tactical moves and strategic ones.

Making a move now is more of the latter one.

No it’s not. You think conversations about interest can’t happen behind the scenes if Greg is still here? Of course they can. We get nothing out of of plugging in an interim for the remainder of the season other than potential for the team to fall off the rails in transition (alla the OL in game one) and get more UMass like national attention. There is no point is getting rid of him before season end unless the team gives up and starts performing that way anyway. We’re not going to be “rallying” around an interim and we’re paying Greg’s salary anyway so we may as well just ride out the season.

Again, no one is talking about that.

I thought the tactical/strategy thing kind of explains this.

It’s not about this season, that’s over. The quicker the future can begin, the better.

You want to keep him? Fine, announce he’s out the end of the season and officially get the ball rolling now as well.

Why not give Schiano enough NIL to see whether he can make it. Kelly was on track to do this before UMass. He’s been operating with 1 hand tied behind his back. We took too many developmental kids who should be ready next year. A GM with NFL experience would improve our portal outcomes.

How much Total Roster Construction money does Schiano need to be provided in order to be held accountable for results?
Clearly you feel approximately $20-$25m is not sufficient to him accountable.

So how much?
When do the "mulligans" end?

VT got rid of their sclerotic coaching staff after week 3 last year and were in position to land Franklin the second he was canned at PSU. He was officially hired with 2 weeks left to go in the season. If they waited around to fire Pry, some other program more proactive than them could have snatched up Franklin and they'd be shopping around in the offseason with everyone else playing HC musical chairs

I may be in the minority on this …. But I feel like there are a lot of people in my camp who are feeling the same thing but not going to speak up on it …. If Schiano goes, I go too.

I’m 35 years old and grew up on Rutgers football with Greg Schiano. My family and I have had season tix and tailgate just about every game since 2004. Live it, eat it, breathe it. Today we brought my 5 month old daughter to her first Rutgers Football game, and it brought back memories to when I was a kid watching Schiano take on the Miami Hurricanes

We won a grand total of 3 games in the 2 years prior to Schiano’s return, and we went winless in the Big 10 2 years in a row…. We were losing recruits to Temple ….. Easy to forget just how bad things were when he took over in 2020…. My Rutgers football fandom was really waning until his return.

Progress is never linear like people want it to be but since he’s been back we’ve been trending up. Greg’s had to deal with pathetic leadership above him (Hobbs), severe lack of resources, and is only just finally getting real leadership from above.

UMass was a bad loss. UMass played lights out but no excuse to lose that game. BC is a game we should have won on paper but our QB play was really bad and have to give credit to their QB who made plays. Super easy for recency bias to say “hey we suck fire the coach” but to me it’s a truly weak take.

We need to get better. QB play has been well below where it needs to be, and our defense showed some flashes today but needs to be way more consistent.

Give Schiano another year in the portal with continuity of staff, real NIL backing, and alignment from above, and let’s see what he can do.

The anti-Schiano mob has been coming for Greg for years and just been waiting for the right opportunity to pounce. It feels like we’re nearing a tipping point…. And I hate to say it but if Greg goes, I go too. I stand with Greg

I gave you a like just because you had the guts to go against the current "...anti-Schiano mob ..." Think there's a lot of big mouths on these forums, who don't move the needle on hiring and firing, because they're not opening their wallets, and there's lots of reasons to still respect Schiano -- but, he's getting paid lots of money, too much in fact, underperformed, until last night seemed a bit stale, has had trouble pulling in assistants, and still remember him leaving Rutgers in lurch by running to the NFL like he did, taking a bunch of coaches with him. If he could just coach and get his guys to play like last night, and have better luck in the portal, all would be well. Still, probably too late for that ... my concern is the remaining length of his contract and not sold on some of the names thrown around as a replacement, but it's not my decision. Indeed he accomplished that for which he was hired, raising us from the Ash level futility. I'll end by saying, Schiano made a lot more sense in the pre-NIL era.
Did he raise us from Ash level? We are winless ! Blown out by UMass at home and lost to a bad BC school. He may win next weekend but Indiana will use this USC game and curb stomp us.

Firing him now just shows that it’s a new Rutgers under Zinn and Tate. Make the move

Makes sense! Agree the 2 losses were bad losses. UMass being much worse. BC at least is an ACC team and we were playing with a first time starting QB who just didn’t have it.… that said if we play like we played today the rest of the way I think we’ll turn a lot of opinions around
I think TU can win some games. This game gave me hope. You have the right attitude compared to so many here. Cheers

I feel Hobbs was strong armed into offering that deal.

But that is just my view from very far away.
I still don't why. I mean, no school was going to poach Schiano from Rutgers, what leverage did he have for extension? Made no sense, thought so at the time. Anyway, nothing you can do about it now.

Despite our abysmal record, I do think, as a program, overall, it s better than Ash level futility. Ash would have lost 50-3 to USC, and complained about guys not being hydrated enough. Now USC is not the 12th ranked team, never were, and probably looking ahead to Oregon, but we matched them, or exceeded them in every important stat, total offense, 3rd down conversions, ect except t/o and final score, and of course the final stat is the only one that matters. But USC is a program filled with legit 4/5 star talent.

To be fair Ash, he didn't the benefit of NIL or a fundraising AD, so there's that too. UMASS is Ash level or worse, but this team has improved since then. Think this might be a team that actually gets better during the course of the year. Haven't had one of those in a long time.

Not suggesting the coaches have done a good job. They should have had the guys ready to play from Day 1. And they should have gotten the back up QB more game reps last year. Their talent evaluation questionable at best. The misses in recruiting and portal is only matched by the lack of development, but think this team beat's an Ash team, and it's not even close.

Schiano & Co. time is overripe. I'm just sad that fool Hobbs gave him an extension, but if you could get someone like BK at the low end of FMV, that would offset a little having to keep paying Schiano. Similar to what Purdue and Fitzgerald.

I addressed the leverage in a post above. Hobbs was compromised with off-field shenangigans, and he was going to do whatever the powers at Rutgers (including Greg) wanted.

We had nearly ten times that of UMass, so you’re saying a bigger multiple would help?! I strongly disagree.
We don’t play UMass 12 games. We need to be prepared to compete with the Big Ten. That means getting a Big Ten Competitive Quarterback, which costs at least $2M. Then we’d be ready for UMass.

So if Rutgers is at Total Roster Cost of approx $25m again in 2027 - Schiano gets another mulligan?
Maybe in 2028 he has to actually be held accountable for winning?

For the $30m in 2027 - how do you expect Rutgers to nearly double their NIL fundraising - coming off losses to UMass, BC and presumably a bottom of the B1G finish?

If Franklin could not compete in the B1G at Penn State, he was not going to come to Rutgers . . . .

This. I also don’t understand what the difference is if the standing coach is officially “gone” or not. Conversations can still happen at the AD. Franklin wasn’t officially hired until after.

What do you mean $25M again. Our budget this year was likely closer to $20M. You asked me what was needed and I told you what was needed. What is needed and what we could realistically get are two different things.

Stop picking nits. Rutgers' NIL is in line with or more than: Louisville (ranked), Arizona State, Illinois and Washington. Do you know what those schools have that Rutgers does not? No, not fieldhouses--a book of excuses and a cadre of fans that buy into the book of excuses and revel in mediocrity.

Perhaps they remember all of the quality hires as head football coaches here not named Greg Schiano since the move by Rutgers to the Big Time.

We go 4-8 this year.
"Mulligan" because only $20m.

Suppose 2027 is only $25m.
Well below your $30m threshold for
accountability.
Does that mean no accountability and a other "mulligan"?

Schiano gets to wait until 2028 to be held to expectations?
And when we are still below the ever increasing "RutgersAl required minimum roster spend" - another mulligan?

Seems Schiano can go 4-8/5-7 for life and never have any expectations?

I've said it before.
Its always Schiano's most ardent supporters who are the first to say "his actual coaching has little to no impact. It's all about money."
He's a "great coach" who can't translate that greatness into actual results.

His equation is this.

Number of wins (W) is equal to: (1) the size of the fieldhouse in square feet (X) divided by 6500 plus NIL$ in millions divided by 5 (N/5).

The 6500 is based on the size of Ohio State's fieldhouse, which is 78,000 square feet, and that divided by 6500 is 12 wins.

Mathematically that's:

W= X/6500 + N/5.

In Rutgers' case, X is 0/6500 % 20/5, therefore, a 4 win season is a success to Al.

It ain’t mediocrity. His conference winning % is under 30%. It’s reveling in losing and incompetent coaching.
