I know this is way off topic but why not get Mark D’Nofrio, Al Golden’s old DC at Temple/Miami as the new D line coach. Played at Penn State with Golden and is a Jersey guy. Does anyone know if he’s even coaching anymore?
He's DC and ILB coach at Houston under Major Applewhite currently...

Derek Dooley has been hired as Mizzou OC so another competitor out.

Missouri: Dallas Cowboys receivers coach Derek Dooley will be the new offensive coordinator at Missouri! The former Tennessee and Louisiana Tech head coach has never served as a offensive coordinator. At Missouri Dooley will also coach the quarterbacks…which to our knowledge he has never done before either. Oh boy… let’s do this! Prior to his two head coaching opportunities Dooley coached tight ends for Saban with the Dolphins, running backs, tight ends and special teams at LSU and receivers at SMU back in the late 90s.

Canada has reached a settlement with LSU too. 1.7M to walk away.

LSU: Per Ross Dellenger, Matt Canada accepted $1.7 million payment to leave LSU’s staff. Canada was owed $3.3 million. With the agreement Canada is no longer part of the staff. Per Dellenger, “Canada’s willingness to settle is evidence of a bitter situation on both sides and is a sign that the school was reluctant to pay the full buyout.” LSU has confirmed the separation with Ed O noting, “We will identify a coach with a wealthy of experience who is totally committed to the vision of the program and has the drive to do whatever it takes to see it through.” O added, “We want to put our players in the best position to succeed which means improving our vertical passing game and developing our quarterbacks and wide receivers to be at their absolute best.”

I find Dooley to be a strange hire for that reason. He's never been a coordinator and he's replacing a good one in Heupel whose offense was ranked 8.

But again it shows that maybe it's not us who undesirable like some were saying. Like I've said it's a two sided thing. Now we've seen 2 SEC schools make a hire, one from within staff and one an unusual hire of someone never having been a coordinator. Mazzone and others are still out there.

Maybe it's Ash who doesn't want them rather than them not wanting us.

Canada, Mazzone, Wright are all free now and Mizzou and South Carolina have made their OC hires leaving us, Illinois and TT still looking and maybe LSU if Ensminger isn't promoted.

There's this from Feldman. I'm with him in that I'm a little surprised but who knows what goes through some of these coach's minds.

Bruce Feldman‏Verified account@BruceFeldmanCFB 3h3 hours ago
Interesting hire by #Mizzou making Derek Dooley its new OC. The Tigers had interviewed several really proven OCs in the past few weeks...Statistically, it'll be tough for Dooley to improve on an offense that ranked No. 6 in the nation this year.

Is the rap against Canada that he’s hard to work with or just a difficult person or both?

Sounds like he wants control.
Reading the posts, articles, etc, it seems Bielema tried to take back some control, Orgeron wanted more control. Maybe he's one of those guys who is always looking for his next job too, which explains his longevity issues. If so, maybe not the best fit. Betting that Doerren will give Ash some decisive feedback on Canada.

If this is a poker game I’m pushing all of my chips in the middle of the table on Courtney Messingham. Rumor has it that tomorrow’s NDSU duel with JMU is truly a case of the unstoppable force against the immovable object.

As far as Canada, maybe RU is the situation where he’s given the keys to the O and Ash just lets him go. Regardless, the end of this search is going to be very interesting.

simply for amusement, just decided to reflect back upon the huge trail of speculation & ponder who has been mentioned & what is known - or what little is known - as to where these individuals stand now - granted some are huge long-shots - or were pure unrealistic wild guesses that may not have even been open to discussions - and there is an enormous possibility that the eventual winner is not even on the list! - contestants who have already been reported to have made moves are in gray -

Noel Mazzone – now freed from A&M - and looking ?
John McNulty – still with Chargers - ? - reportedly dislikes recruiting?
Brian Wright – still at Toledo – but - reported to not be in the mix
Phil Longo – staying at Ole Miss ? appears out of consideration

Jedd Fisch – free from UCLA & looking -did not get / take Mizzou OC
Todd Fitch – still at Louisiana Tech
AJ Blazek – highly doubtful at this point
Rhett Lashlee – MOVED to SMU
Travis Trickett – still at Georgia State
Bryan McClendon - @ South Carolina - moved up to OC
Joe Osovet – at ASA – listening /interviewing?
Matt Canada – free from LSU
Courtney Messingham – at NDSU
Dan Enos – MOVED to MICHIGAN
K.C.Keeler – HC at Sam Houston State University
Frank Cignetti – was at NY Giants ? assume looking for a job
Graham Harrell – at North Texas
Bobby Acosta – at Bucknell -
Ryan Carty – at New Hampshire
Les Miles - unrealistic - truly not happening
Al Golden - nope nope nope

any other speculation to be added to the field? or individuals who are definitively eliminated from consideration?

Just speculation.

Mazzone would have been hired already if he was a fit.

In the bowl broadcast they did a segment on how Fisch wants to be a head coach. He was listed as candidate for Arizona job now that it’s open.

Timing constraints that would push it to this weekend Canada release from LSU contract, Messingham D1AA championship game, waiting for NFL coaches to move around after black Monday.

Not related to us but again just to gauge movement going on. Kendal Briles has jumped from Kiffin and FAU to Applewhite at Houston.

Houston: Major Applewhite is hiring FAU offensive coordinator Kendal Briles and former Baylor offensive line coach Randy Clements.

I want this guy. Now. Just threw a 50-yard bomb on 3rd and 15 against the best overall D in the FCS.

JMU D

Scoring - #1 10.7 PPG (NDSU with 14 already 2nd Q)
Total - #3 251.1 ypg

Can't disagree with you so far. He certainly has designed an attack. This JMU defense was holding teams to 11 pts a game. Now. Levels are not comparable but he has to coach the label of talent he has so he looks good so far. Of course it is one game only so can't get too excited.

certainly a fine performance is being delivered by NDSU

But - let's just remember this is (and has been) a well oiled machine - one that presents very different coaching challenges from what one would find at Rutgers.

North Dakota State Bison football
Division I (FCS) Championship game appearance history
2010 lost - 31-38 (OT)
2011 won - 17-6
2012 won - 39-13
2013 won - 35-7
2014 won - 29-27
2015 won - 37-10
2016 lost - 17-27
2017 ?

Courtney Messingham joined the NDSU juggernaut 11 months ago in February of 2017 - so he had no contribution to the recruiting for the team on the field .... and it would be hard to ascertain how much he added to the basic offense that they are running. But it does look like he is making the right moves - he has certainly succeeded in not screwing it up.

Messingham may be brilliant - may be perfect - no reason to dislike him - but - just hard to get a true read on how well he would do if faced with the monumental design & build project of the Rutgers Offense

Nevertheless, I'm willing to bet that we'd never see that horrible "QB like a statue" hand-off play.

I am 100% convinced there is not a single coach in America who you will be happy with us hiring.

Another coaching move, things seem to be picking up. I'd like to think something will happen fairly soon with us. GT hired the App. State DC as their DC. I've actually suggested possibly the App. State OC Frank Ponce as a co-OC. Satterfield calls plays at App. State but Ponce could be someone to groom for the future and probably wouldn't need a big salary.

Georgia Tech: As we first noted on December 22, Georgia Tech has now formally announced Nate Woody as defensive coordinator.

Not sure why the wait but the OL coach from JMU is going to Maryland and it was being held til after the game. At least footballscoop seems like they were holding onto it until after the game. So if it's the NDSU guy you'd think something would come out soon.

And with that…we can now tell you Maryland has their new offensive line coach (per sources)

Maryland: Sources tell FootballScoop James Madison offensive line coach Bryan Stinespring will be Maryland’s new offensive line coach. Stiney, the lone-time Virginia Tech assistant, has been with JMU two seasons, two very good seasons.

One name I haven't seen mentioned... any chance Darrell Hazell is in the mix? His offenses stunk at Purdue but his resume before then was solid (he was Kent State's HC when they beat us) and this year he's been the Minnesota Vikings' WR coach and they've had a really good passing offense.

From New Jersey, coached at Rutgers, Ohio State ties (under Tressel not Urban but still).

Not saying he'd be a home run but just surprised it hasn't come up.
You answered your own question. Without Dri Archer, and playing against real competition, his offense was garbage.

Agree, if it were Messingham one would have expected, if not a formal announcement, at least some form of message. Leak, tweet etc that the deal was done.

Naw - there are lots of coaches that might make me happy - and it is not a like or dislike - or happy or unhappy regarding Messingham - just a curiosity about how adept he is at innovating & dealing with adversity

- bottom line - if Ash steps up to a podium and says "I am delighted to introduce XXXXXX as our new Offensive Coordinator - he has the unique creativity, vision, dedication and experience to take our offense to new levels of excellence" well then that is more than good enough!

I guess it depends on how highly you value a guy who holds the distinction of being fired by Brady Hoke.

You mean the Brady Hoke who has basically the same record as Jim Harbaugh after 3 seasons?

What about the guy who replaced him, Doug Nussmeier? He went to Florida after Hoke got canned. Florida finished 111th and 116th nationally in total offense his first two seasons.

The Wolverines averaged 20.9 points and 333.0 yards per game in 2014 to rank 109th and 112th nationally, respectively, in both categories, a significant decline from the previous season in which the team scored 32.2 points per game and averaged 373.5 yards.

Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner regressed from 2,960 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2013 to 1,896 yards, 10 TDs and 15 picks in 2014.
With Brady Hoke fired as coach after that 2014 season, Nussmeier was expected to be relieved of his duties. But it didn’t come to that as he took the Florida job.
In reporting on his departure, the Detroit Free Press wrote: “Nussmeier’s Michigan stint could only be called a disaster, given that U-M dropped from 32 points per game the previous year under Al Borges to just 20.9 under Nussmeier. Though the offensive line and running game improved slightly, this was one of the two worst offensive seasons in the past 30 at U-M, joining 2008.”

-------------
And Nussmeier has quite an impressive resume on paper as OC/QB coach in the NFL and P5.

And some are getting all lathered up over a potential hire who has no FBS experience. Roll the dice.

Michigan should figure out the cost per win between Hoke's 26 and Harbaugh's 28.

Also remember Hoke recruited well and left the cupboard pretty full for Harbaugh.

And I think that Harbaugh is done after next season.

I think we beat UM at home. It's 2014 all over again.
