Just because RU paid Kill $600k does not mean that is what they would pay for a Wright or a Carty, salary will depend on who is hired & what they are considered to be worth.
Do you really think we're in the position to low ball anybody? I mean it's not a state secret that we were 128th and 129th in offense the last two years or what we had paid our last OC. You think we're going to take the chance of offending a canidate to save a $100K? Hell we paid Boy Wonder over $400K and he had 1 yr. of Co-OC experience at JMU.

The only guy we would likely save money with is Canada and that's only because of a possible LSU settlement. Even then maybe not, it depends on what the structure is.

Valid point. I just get the sense that Ash took comfort in the fact that he had someone(Kill) on the offensive side of the ball that he didn’t have to worry about. I just can’t wait to hear the press conference when the choice is made and why the choice was made.

Also look at the OC at Central Michigan, and offensive innovator and a Jersey guy.
You have had some really out of the box choices, but I can't quibble with any of them. The CMU OC is very intriguing:

http://cmuchippewas.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/chris_ostrowsky_1042570.html

Chris Ostrowsky joined the Central Michigan staff in March 2017 as the offensive coordinator after building a high-scoring offense as head coach at Northern Michigan University for five seasons.

Ostrowsky's background includes time as an offensive coordinator, a quarterbacks coach, a recruiting coordinator, passing game coordinator and an assistant head coach in stops at Northern Michigan, Northeastern (Mass.) and Division III Widener (Pa.)

The Northern Michigan offense averaged more than 31.7 points a game and more than 386 yards of offense in 2015 and 2016, the most prolific two-year stretch of offense in Wildcats' football history.

With Ostrowsky, the Wildcats established 28 all-time offensive school records. Quarterback Shayne Brown thrived in Ostrowsky's offense and established seven records:
  • Career passing yards (9,267)
  • Career touchdown passes (75)
  • Career completions (726)
  • Career attempts (1,238)
  • Single-season touchdown passes (30)
  • Single-season passing yards (3,123)
  • Career total offensive yards (9,112)

Marcus Tucker in 2014-15, Keondre Craig in 2015 and Paris Woods in 2016 all recorded 800-yard receiving seasons, and Woods caught the longest TD pass in Northern Michigan history, a 92-yarder, in 2016.

Ostrowsky said he had success at Northern Michigan with a multiple spread offense that “stretched the field horizontally and vertically.” “I would say we had a lot of success offensively, and we got great production out of our quarterback,” he said.

Ostrowsky was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks and wide receivers coach and the recruiting coordinator at Washington and Lee University from 2001-2004. Before that, he attracted attention as the head coach of the East Side High School football team in Newark, N.J., from 1997-2001. He was the 1998 Newark Star Ledger Coach of the Year in 1998.

He graduated from Roselle Park High School
, where he played quarterback, and he went on to play at New Jersey City University. "

Hmmmmm.

CMU #77 in total offense with 391.5 yards per game (same as previous year)
#43 in passing offense with 255.7 passing yards per game (276 previous year)
#64 Scoring offense with 28.5 points per game (improved from 26.3)

What I am saying is that RU will pay over $600k for the right guy, but not every candidate will be getting an offer at the top range, no one is talking about low balling anyone so don't start making stuff up!

Surprised nobody posted this from Football Scoop yet (http://footballscoop.com/the-scoop/):

Rutgers: Source tells FootballScoop Toledo offensive coordinator Brian Wright is a candidate for the same position at Rutgers.

I think this would be a very good hire if it comes to fruition.

This has been refuted in Dunleavy's piece:
http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/i...ashlee_hired_at_smu_after_interview_at_r.html

"FootballScoop.com cited a source in listing Toledo's Brian Wright -- a former offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic under Ash's friend Charlie Partridge -- in the running, but NJAM's sources refuted the report."

And there is this unintelligible gem (great writing):
"Lashlee's name was at one point but cooled off."

Article with some more info on Canada and him being a candidate at multiple schools and his personality conflicts at past schools.

Some excerpts from the article.

The highest paid offensive coordinator in college football last year, Canada signed a three-year deal in December of 2016 paying him $1.5 million in salary. The school owes him about $3.3 million to buy out the final two years of the deal. The program can pay the $3.3 million in monthly installments over the life of the contract, through 2020. The amount is mitigated with any future salary Canada receives from another job.

The 45-year-old Indiana native is actively pursuing other jobs, something the LSU football program insisted he do at some point in mid-December. He is currently a candidate at a handful of schools.

As for Canada, he has a track record of short stays and similar riffs.

LSU was his fifth school in the past seven seasons, including Pitt (2016), N.C. State (2013-15), Wisconsin (2012) and Northern Illinois (2011). At Wisconsin, he and then-head coach Bret Bielema were engrossed in a power struggle over control of the offense, according to a story published in the Wisconsin State Journal in 2012.

Canada "put his foot down" to Bielema late in the 2012 season, according to the story. His offense followed with one of its most productive outings, rolling up 640 yards in a 71-30 win over Nebraska in the Big Ten championship game. Bielema did not take Canada with him when leaving for Arkansas after that season.

After his second season at N.C.State in 2014, Canada signed a new three-year contract paying him $560,000 per year. Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren fired Canada a year later, a move that stunned Canada, he's said in the past.

At LSU, a disconnect between Canada and Orgeron appeared to develop about a month into the season, around the time the head coach admitted to removing the presnap movements in the first half of the Troy game. The team returned to Canada's presnap movement in the second half, rallying but falling short in the first home non-conference loss in 17 years.

During his first interview with reporters since August, Canada last week hinted at the internal fight between he and Orgeron. A reporter asked Canada if he felt like he controlled his offense this season.

“Yes,” he responded.

Another reported followed asking, “All year?”

Canada sat mum, non-verbally declining to answer.

Well with Ash being a defense guy I’d bet he will hand the reins over to whomever he hires...he saw with Kill that having an experienced guy in that spot offers more than just calling plays.

Well Bielema was a defensive guy and the buffoon (Orgeron) was also a defensive guy with even less knowledge and there were still personality conflicts. I'd say many HCs will want at least some input especially if things ever get bumpy. He worked with Doeren at NIU and even he suddenly fired him when they rejoined at NC State. So it's likely an issue.

If you stay out of his way and give him full control bumpy ride or not, then you can probably avoid problems but how many HCs give so much carte blanche to assistants. That's actually the selling point Orgeron used when he was made HC and he still couldn't help himself from getting involved.

So Canada is a solid coach and he's done some good stuff and some average stuff in his career but the personality issue is something that has to be taken into account and if it can be managed from both sides so no conflict arises.

I don't know I could see it for sure but it is something I think should be fleshed out to make sure there are no issues. The other thing is he's been at 5 schools in 7 years so for those looking for continuity in a single person that can be an issue as well. We could have competition for him too.

He's definitely on the hunt for a HC position, not as if others aren't, but maybe more ambitiously than most. I mean that's about the only way to ensure no further personality conflicts for himself, he'd be running the show.

The Brian Wright name has vaulted back into the thick of the discussions
- which also then brings the various Charlie Partridge connections back on to the table - and might be worth pondering

How, if at all, do the following factors enter into the current picture / have impact?

At FAU Brian Wright was the OC (operating spread) under Carl Pelini - took over interim HC role when Pelini resigned in 2013 - and the Wright coached FAU went 4-0 for finish of 2013 - Wright was a possible permanent replacement for Pelini - but FAU chose Partridge - who kept Wright as OC for 2014 & 2015

Partridge fired Wright at the end of the 2015 season (and moved from spread to pro)

Partridge went 3-9 in each of his three seasons ('14, '15 & '16) at FAU and then was fired after 3 years of a 5 year contract.

Partridge is, by all accounts, respected by & a good friend of - Chris Ash - a fellow Drake alum

Whether it is or is not a real possibility - or a wise move - periodically the idea of Partridge joining Chris Ash's staff surfaces. Also note - Prior to his FAU stint - Charlie Partridge was the Arkansas defensive line coach .prior to FAU - and DL coach at Pitt in 2017... and Ash is looking for a DL coach

I thought Partridge was in the running for the DC job at Pitt? Also could wright and partridge be that close if cp fired him?

all good questions - don't know how any of this will play out - and yeah the dynamic between Wright & Partridge would seem to possibly be odd /strained - and wonder what input Ash gets from friend Partridge

Of course handicapping this thing would be a little easier if Ash was a little more definitive on the scheme he wanted to run. The only thing he has said that I recall, is that they want to run the ball effectively but how they get there is unclear. He consistently defended the lack of run/pass balance during the season saying it was not that important, which was just a cover for being incapable of passing the ball.

Footballscoop coming more in line with Dunleavy's report now. Too bad I liked him.

Rutgers: Sources told FootballScoop this morning Toledo OC Brian Wright is not a candidate for the same position at Rutgers.

Other news as well just to see what's happening around.

Bruce Feldman‏Verified account@BruceFeldmanCFB 13m13 minutes ago
SOURCE: #MichiganState Co-DC Harlon Barnett will become the new defensive coordinator at #FSU. Big hire for Taggart. Barnett is highly thought of by the players there and by his staff. Very impressive dude.

Florida State: Pete Thamel tweets that Harlon Barnett’s deal for three-years and worth almost $1 million annually.

EDIT: Another guy I had mentioned since last year as a possibility just got hired by South Carolina.

South Carolina: Sources tell FootballScoop Alabama offensive analyst Dan Werner will be new quarterbacks coach for Will Muschamp & Bryan McClendon at South Carolina. The long-time Ole Miss assistant and former OC at Miami spent just this one season at Alabama.

I wonder if Al Golden would be interested. Detroit just fired their HC so the new coach will probably want to bring in his own coaches. Seems he has experience on both sides of the ball having been DC at UVA, OC at RBHS and of course most recently the TEs coach for the Lions. Furthermore, he would give recruiting in NJ - Ash's achilles heel - a big boost.

But would Al Golden to Chris Ash be like Fed Hill to Gary Waters?

Al Golden would be a bigger square peg in a round hole than Jerry Kill was. At least Kill had a long track record of success and coaching on the offensive side of the ball as an OC in college. Golden has mainly been a defensive guy, and TEs hardly qualifies him to coach QBs and be an OC after one year as an OC at a high school. Pass.

Well then I guess there should some familiarity. I thought Ash was a DB coach at Wisconsin and became Bielma’s DC at Arkansas.

Ash was a DC at Wisconsin and Arkansas. As far as familiarity, well there was familiarity between Doeren and Canada from NIU and he still was fired at NC State so who knows if it helps or not. You'd think it should but you never know for sure.

One name I haven't seen mentioned... any chance Darrell Hazell is in the mix? His offenses stunk at Purdue but his resume before then was solid (he was Kent State's HC when they beat us) and this year he's been the Minnesota Vikings' WR coach and they've had a really good passing offense.

From New Jersey, coached at Rutgers, Ohio State ties (under Tressel not Urban but still).

Not saying he'd be a home run but just surprised it hasn't come up.

We cannot just pay more money because that is the trend.. in your example you showed why not. The quality of the OC is not guaranteed by paying more. We just need to work real hard to find the right guy.. it could be a big money hire... or a hidden gem at a lower level on the way up. How much would it have cost to get Chip Kelly from UNH when they beat us?

Maybe we need to spend money on a guy who can find the right guy and not waste any money doing so. Then again, this is Rutgers.. where we hired an executive search firm to find Tim Pernetti's replacement at AD.. then ignored their advice to hire Julie Hermann for some PC reasons.

Go ask Todd Graham, he seems to have knack of finding solid to very good OCs. Ironically, he's a defensive coach. He hired Gus Malzahn, Chad Morris, Mike Norvell, Major Applewhite, Chip Lindsey and Billy Napier as OCs. All except Lindsey (Auburn OC now) have gotten HC jobs somewhere and were all solid to very good offensive coaches.
