I work with someone that knows Rondo's mom from way back. She said that even that far back money was being offered to top players. Mom was in charge, and she/he went with Tubby because he was straight, and didn't try to buy him.

Yeah, I've talked to people involved in recruiting in the 80s who have told me about suitcases of cash.
You used to hear about $100 handshakes. The Emory package to Chris Mills only had a $1,000 in it. Now we are talking about $100-150K for a wing. And $500K for a center. The bad ole days don't seem that bad now. LOL
Friend of mine recorded a short-lived radio show with Kenny Rice and Kenny Walker. One episode they talked to Rex Chapman and Melvin Turpin.
On break from recording Kenny and Rex started talking about those $100 handshakes and extras from the boosters.
Turpin had no idea what they were talking about. They thought he was joking but he said the only extras he ever got was that people would show up at his door every night with a large pizza.
Almost quaint by today's standards but I always thought it was funny that Turpin got paid off in pizzas.

It's hard to believe Pitino's been paying for players since the Rondo era at Ky. You'd think he would'a had a better recruiting record. As of late Pitino has been in on much better recruits than previous years.. Adidas was hooking him up.. He was desperate to compete with us and save his job.. He sold his soul..

I knew of boosters who were responsible for taking care of certain players at EKU when Ford was there.
Had a friend who played D-3. Said players could sell programs at the women's games and would pocket the cash.
I mean, to some degree this goes on everywhere. But coaches directly orchestrating payments from shoe companies to players doesn't happen everywhere.

I don't think there is a perfectly clean program in the country. That includes Duke. That includes teams with all white boys like Wisconsin. Whether it's deals set up front by the coaches and boosters or it's agents behind the scenes or simply restaurant owners around town giving free meals, every program has its bugaboos.
Corruption is common in all aspect of life.
