You're right but he hasn't called anyplace else Camelot. UK might not have made Pitino but UK did a lot more for him than he did for UK. We were a blue blood program before he came, after he left and will be when he hangs it up. I'll give him his due for what he did at the time but no more, no less. Leave his banner up so he can see it every time he comes in for his *** whipping. That way he can continue to ponder "only if."
I love Coach Cal, but Pitino's teams were the closest my generation will ever come to watching teams dominate like that of when Rupp coached. For me, that will always hold a special place in my heart. For that, the UK Pitino will always have my respect

When the UL homer media starts turning on Pitino, it is pretty bad.I think Rick knew it was his last walk off the UK court. Some fans said some things, and Rick lost it. And then add the fact that he wimped out on the post game media event (again). Rick's a great coach. But the last 5-6 years, have shown he is a lousy person and role model for the team he leads. It's sad to see this. It's like Rick is descending into a darkness, that he can't get out of.

I'm not defending Pitino's actions of today, what I'm defending is what he did when he was at UK. For me, that's FAR more important than what he's done now or the last 15 years
it is because he is a horrible human being . I honestly don't care that he used to coach us and now coaches UL. I mean is it shady ? sure but it is the way he lies , lies , lies and makes excuses and runs from responsibility . He is just a piece of trash . He and Urban Meyer are the 2 biggest phonies in the history of coaching and both would shank their mother to win a game and then cry crocodile tears about the passing of said mother .

1992- bone headed coaching on last play of game against Duke cost UK a trip to final four.
1993- had best team in nation and chokes against fab five in final four in OT.
1994- loses in second round to Marquette
1995- once again can argue he had best team in nation and chokes against UNC in final eight. He has always been UNC's ***** just like he is UK's *****.
1997- chokes away NCAA title game to Arizona in OT.

Go shake his hand then. He's been the coach of our bitter rival a lot longer than he was the coach here, and he's even got a stupid Cardinal tattoo on his back. He walks out of his last game at RUPP Arena flipping off the UK fans. The man is history in my book. For now anyway.
You bring up a good point... what "bad stuff" did Pitino do while at UK? It was pre-internet, and 100 sports channel era. I do remember rumors of him and a UK cheerleader while he was here.

Calipari just has so much more class than Pitino. Did you see the Calipari and Lewis(or lee) exchange after the game. Cal spent extended time with him, basically high fiving him, and telling him how great he played. I mean, it was more than the just pass through the line, "great game" comment.

I say leave the banner up. It will always be a reminder to him of what he had and threw away and that has to eat away at him. Granted he won a championship at both schools, look at what he has to show for them.

Nah. What Rick accomplished at UK can never be taken away. Part of me wonders how I will feel 10 years down the road if Rick tries to reach out to BBN. The way the U of L thing is ending, I don't see him staying connected with that program after he resigns.
I remember very well. I also remember that same man flipping the finger to those same fans today. You can justify if you want. Winning a title at UK is not a free pass to do whatever you want. He's a grade a punk who can't handle a loss like a man.
This is a good sign for people wanting to see something change in Louisville. The media has kissed Rick's butt and given him a blank check from day one. They haven't done their job with this latest scandal either. Maybe there is some hope here. Anyone else would have been run out of town by now but Rick just keeps walking away unscathed. I guess we'll see.

He continually disrespects the UK program and the fan base. I agree that it needs to come down. He has no loyalty or appreciation for UK basketball. It's one thing to leave for the NBA, no problem. It's another thing to come back and coach college at your former teams rival (Dean Smith at Duke or Coach K at Carolina?). But again, no problem. But to come to the university that gave you your first championship and flip off the fans? That crosses the line.
No, obviously not. But the theory is the same. In fact, maybe we should investigate all the owners of the jerseys. No telling how many skeletons are lurking in their closets. DUI's, protection orders, late taxes, parking tickets, spitting on sidewalks, and (heaven forbid) texting while driving. The witch hunt could get all the banners down. No. Just no. Look at what Indiana is going through. We can debate all we want about how much being at UK contributed to Pitino's success, but there was not a line of Hall of Fame coaches waiting to take the job when he did. We owe him a debt whether we choose to acknowledge it or not.
When he took the job we had 5 championships. We have eight now. What Pitino did here made an impression on Cal at UMass. It wasn't Coach Hall or Eddie Sutton. There is no universe that Tubby Smith could have come in and recruited a team then coached that group of recruits to a national title. What Pitino did for the university extended even beyond his tenure here.
UK will be UK, but keep this in mind. Anyone can get in a million dollar sportscar and drive it around the track, but few and far between are the ones that can compete with pro drivers in that same car. Sutton didn't win a championship here. CBG didn't win a championship here. If the university was the source of the magic they would have won titles. UK is the vehicle, one unmatched by any other. But it takes a special pilot to make it look good.

Like the respect he showed to the fans when he basically said f you to them when he flipped them off? To get respect you have to give respect. Him acting like a p.o.s. sore loser doesn't earn him any respect.
The Banner represents great moments in Kentucky history, nothing more. Take whatever judgments you have about pitino and do what you want but leave our history alone.
I understand what you're saying, but we already have banners and jerseys that represent great moments during Pitino's era. He is now a person who is roundly booed by UK fans. He has a Louisville Cardinal tattoo on his body. He's involved in scandal with the NCAA and has shown to be a pretty shady guy. He flipped off our fans today. His banner needs to come down.
But it will never happen. UK will take the high road.
