I can tell you for a fact and not rumor from a scout who has talked to Cal, Cal is telling each player to test the draft process because he feels that some players aren’t to totally buying into him telling them they aren’t ready (like many players do) and he wants them to get the info straight from the horses mouth telling them that they aren’t ready and what they need to work on. It’s like a parent telling you to do something and a reason and you aren’t fully bought in until your favorite uncle tells you the same thing

IMO this helps Cal also. He now will be able to tell NR remember what the NBA told you that you need to improve on? It will allow Cal to push him even more every day in practice.

I think this is a good point. If I was Cal i would bang that drum all summer and all next year.

How is it throwing him under the bus to tell what Cal and everybody else already knows?

I think he meant he didn’t think Cal would/ should say something to the effect of “yes nick is putting his name in the draft to be evaluated but I think it’s a bad idea as he is not good enough/ ready”

Since that’s what it takes to impress these guys, I think We should get about 6-8 cars and lease them to our athletes and, of course, students too. We don’t want to violate any rules....nothing UNC hasn’t done if you recall “wheels for Heels”.

Never heard anything else concerning the hundreds of dollars in parking fines with cars that didn't belong to the players did we? Shocking.

I am so happy Nick put his name is the draft. Really hope an NBA gen mgr. takes an interest in him. We've heard the rumors of league interest in Nick, in spite of his demonstrated inability to contribute consistently, with focus, to beat defenses more often than he got beat ON defense, and so on. And then the part about how his coach didn't even use him in the most crucial game of his college career, throughout which he was was ALWAYS the most formidable specimen suited up for either squad. C-Ya

He saw the change it made in PJ and wants to see similar impact on EJ and NR. There is a little lottery chance one of them goes off and gets someone’s attention. The draft is all about potential and future years for some teams.

You mad tho

I'm not mad , I'm embarrassed for UK , embarrassed for Nick , Embarrassed for Cal and fed up with the " process" . Guys that cant even help a college team win a game " testing the waters" it shouldnt take Alfred Einstein to pass that damn test . Dude cant excel in the SEC . Can we please reconnect with reality ? Are we really going to be that one school where guys that get their *** schooled every year " test the waters" en masse ? I dont want to be that school . ( Studs going early fine by me , dont even give me that angle )

Theres a difference between a late first round likely second rd guy going vs two guys who aren’t projected in any draft for the foreseeable future. This isn’t a pj like situation and when cal made his statement he was clearly referring to herro and Johnson neither of which care as long as they get the guaranteed money.

If you’re “embarrassed “ my friend.., like actually emotionally “embarrassed” then you’re taking the hobby of UK basketball way to seriously , ya know?

I really do understand the frustration. Nick is OBVIOUSLY not remotely ready for the draft but he even knows this. This is solely an evaluation imo.
It’s happening to Duke and other programs as well, it’s the nature of the beast in college basketball these days largely due to the attempt( that seems to he succeeding) professionalization of college basketball and the “muH eXpLoiTAtiON” mantra we are starting to hear more and more of.

That being said you did have a couple funny one liners about this lol

Man you average 4 and 3 and cant get in the game during the NCAAT , you might be be ready to even get evaluated . At what point do you wonder if the guy has any self awareness what so ever . Maybe because we treat the " kids" like adult rock stars ? IDK , its just entirely old .

He is not a dufus. To your other statements I will defer. I guess if Nick goes uninvited he will realize he is not ready but he is not a dufus. That is derogatory and Nick doesn't deserve that. (Good Enough or not.)

ONG!!!!! Crash carts for the CLODites!!! We’re losing them. Code Brown everywhere!! Oh No!!!! Some are jumping!!!!

To most of the sane folks left on Rafters, are you surprised at all? It’s a chance for him to learn about his game. He’s more immersed in basketball. I think I would have been more surprised to the contrary.

I like Nick , I root for him , he's likeable and gives effort all the time . But he isnt exactly setting the world on fire .. If you cant be honest with your own self , you might have issues , only a true friend will be honest with ya . And someone close to Nick might need to tell him making a video statement thanking the fans like he's going somewhere is just goofy . Its a poor move , you can choose another word .,, use " silly " or Waste of Time , whatever . its just dumb .

I’m not comparing the situations. Just stating the benefits and why Cal would likely see it as a positive for each.
EJ has similar upside and a wake up call will only help Cal with NR

Sorry, but this is getting ridiculous.
It’s apparent, winning a Championship at Kentucky, or for that matter, any other OAD program, isn’t on this generations radar. To them, if it happens great, but $$$ is the only goal. Also, don’t kid yourselves. The guys declaring aren’t looking for feedback, they’re looking for ANY reason NOT to return, which is very likely to happen.

I agree. If they have to return for a second, or god forbid a third year, it means that they're obviously not good enough, so they'll look for any other option than returning to college, even if it means the D-League or playing in Serbia for the next 5 years.

That wasn’t my point. I’m simply making an observation and stating it. I’ll support them regardless. Just as a fan, I’d like to see UK and BBN not miss out on opportunities.

As serious a question as I can work up , Just what doesnt Nick know ? What feedback does he need ? Do you need a pro rep' to tell you something Cal has to be telling him ? There is a TON of people here who say Cal doesnt push kids out the door , has he ever made a statement on a player like Nick or EJ and stated " I told them they are not in position to do this but the player decided to enter the process even though I told them differently " ? or something to that effect ?

.. because there is absolutely 0 downside to declaring. The worst that happens is that they get feedback that the aren't ready and are told what they need to improve. Then they return to school without any penalty. Frankly, its basically free job placement prep. Any kid who plays Division One ball should apply. Cal knows this and has said it a million times..so why in the world would Cal come out and make a stupid statement that bad mouths his players?

I can't for the life of me figure put why our fans lose their minds and act like morons over a kid trying to better himself. I think its nothing but pure ignorance and selfishness on the fans part.

I like the job interview angle. Why in the world would you not travel around and meet prospective future employers on their dime? Absolutely he should do this, as should most players.

I think it is pure ignorance to NOT realize something is wrong with this type of culture, be it UK or any other school. Dick Vitale with his one eye can tell Nick what his needs to work on.

So you're embarrassed for Nick ,Cal and the players who are infinitely more skilled at what they do than you are I'd bet? They want the free, no strings attached, direct face to face feedback from the very people who will or wont draft them... not the input of moronic knuckle draggers on the internet. Might hurt your ego but none of the players value your opinion of them. Did you play in the NBA? Coach there? Scout maybe? If not you must be the smartest man in the world.Or the most arrogant to be telling Nick Richards what he should do...

Even if Nick makes a bad decision and goes pro, Cal is never going to publicly say "that was a bad decision." It isn't helpful to the kid, it isn't helpful to Cal, and he's not going to do it just because some of our fans will feel better for hearing it.
