Projecting the suspension for Derek Willis

We'll just have to wait and see what else comes out of this. I think most people on here would agree that if it becomes apparent that he didn't drive or try to drive, then he shouldn't get the hammer brought down on him... A game or maybe two at most. If he did drive drunk, then he should consider himself lucky to get a 10 game suspension instead of a toe tag -- or even worse, a slab at the morgue next to some innocent bystanders.

The problem comes if it remains a mystery. Then we just have to trust that Cal will do what's appropriate taking into consideration DW's honesty, forthrightness, attitude, etc.

What I don't want to see is a justification of any suspension -- or lack thereof -- based on what other programs would do. How many thousands of posts on here bash those other programs for covering **** up or doing what's best for the program over what's right? We can't condemn their scruples and then adopt them when it's convenient.

Heck they made'em ALL quit drinking in Japan. EVERYTHING..yep, soldiers and civilians...too PC....too PC. jmuo

Yes they did BBUK, and that's the PC climate we live in... I don't agree with it, and I wish it wasn't so. Completely different things though.

One poster said between 5 games and a semester. ******** did he kill some one or hold a bank up? Every person on here who has let alcohol pass their lips should STFU! For everyone else who hasn't drank before....STFU, you have never tried alcohol so you don't know what you are talking about.
ok...two posters...[eyeroll]

Hope this hasn't been stated already. Didn't have time to read through the thread.

Teaching moment for the coach. Willis should be dismissed from the team and should face 14 game suspension if he were to be reinstated per the following.

He let the team down due to the behavior. He should be dismissed from the team until the team/coaches decide he should be reinstated by show of hands following a verbal apology at a team meeting.

14 game suspension - Four to be reinstated after completion of an amount of community service to be determined. Four to be reinstated after display of team leadership such as establishing and continuing a "breakfast club" for all the incoming players. Four to be reinstated if he makes ALL stretch individual physical training goals AND academic goals. Lastly, two games at coach's discretion.

Willis learns. Willis improves himself. Team benefits. Win - Win.

Got a feeling that after Cal and Willis have their conversations liquor won't have the same appeal to Willis in the future. He may become born again sober.

As a matter of fact I have family/friend that has been on both sides of that issue. That has nothing to do with this. The record shows the car wasn't running. He wasn't in the car. Now if some of you good Baptist that only drink in church want to persecute the guy go ahead.........I know how loving Christians can be when you don't do as they prescribe.

Awf...that's shorthand for awful right?

No he wasn't in the car, he fell out into the road after he drove up onto the curb and put it park.

I could care less if someone drinks, but if they drink themselves unconscious, involve a car, put themselves and
others in danger, it crosses the line - only a half-witted moron would defend that behavior.

Persecute...ha...you don't even have a remote clue do you?

First off you were not there. Now it seems that maybe someone else was driving. You have made yourself look stupid by trying to be judge and jury. Grow up!

doesn't the athletic dept. still have an established policy on the matter? I know that many years ago following the tragic death of a football player the dept. implement basically a one strike and you're out policy, which was later softened, but still in the case of JP Blevins' public intoxication the policy required he sit out an entire year. Camara was also affected by the policy (sat out a season), however also benefitting from the softened policy in that he was not kicked out of the program altogether. Does anybody have reason to believe or know of whether that policy has been altered, eliminated?

Just by sheer optics no one is going to believe he wasn't the one driving. He's not going to admit it more than likely and I don't blame him. But no one is going to actually believe that and judging by his poor decision making they shouldn't even if he wasn't driving. You're passed out in the road with the driver door wide open home slice.

I have no idea really. But, I originally thought maybe a two game suspension but after seeing that video I'm thinking it could end up being a stiffer penalty handed out by Cal and athletic department. No room for nonsense like Willis did, college kid having fun or not, that was serious stuff.

They don't have binge drinking problems with college students in Europe.

Because they don't make a big deal about minors having a drink. A beer or a glass of wine is just a thing that goes with dinner.

Take away the taboo and the appeal is gone. It's why kids do this. It's why they start drinking young, start smoking weed, take things to an extreme that they otherwise wouldn't.

Its the reason we have more drug addicts than anyone else too.

We keep pounding away at the "just say no, it's bad" nonsense without bothering to explain why. So they naturally rebel.

We then proceed to lock them up when they do exactly what they obviously were going to. We don't treat the problem. So we have more prisoners than anywhere on the planet.

We are a richer country today than we were 60 years ago but our workers make less and our quality of life is worse.

And it's all thanks to the very sort of people that make up the vast majority of this board. Well meaning, naturally good people that because of the system our lords have created has made it virtually impossible for you to even understand what is going on right in front of your face.

No, nobody is. But somehow he hasn't been charged with dui. Cops aren't dumb. First thing is a hand on the exhaust pipe. How long has this car been here? If the car is cold then any story that they had earlier been brought back to the car by other persons would be believable. Or any story that they were at a local residence and attempting to leave but had not would also be believable. If Derek has not been charged with a dui it is only because the exhaust pipe was cold. Maybe there was a party at a local house. Derek and his girlfriend get in the car to leave at 1 am but Derek passes out. She goes to sleep too. An hour more and everybody else has left. An hour later Derek wakes up to a full bladder, steps out and falls in the street - a passed out drunk. All these things are plausible scenarios. And before you say "no way" to any of that (because you must believe he was driving drunk) just think how quickly you would have said "no way" a few months ago if somebody would have told you that Derek Willis would be passed out in the middle of a random neighborhood in Northern Kentucky in the wee hours of the morning in the middle of June. Just like there are ways to have held a sandwich and not have eaten it, ways to have held a gun and not have shot it, they are ways to have lay beside a car passed out drunk in the middle of the night and not have driven it.

As I'm sure you are aware, the entire college structure is entirely different across the pond. Here's something I ran into several months ago, not providing as an attempt to refute your meaning, some quality and validity in what you wrote. The research and statistics will, however, from a "young persons" perspective deflect the notion of a huge disparity.

If it weren't for UNC I would say suspend him both exhibition games and if you want to be real harsh suspend him the first game. But since UNC exists and they get away with everything from drugs to guns to rental cars to 20+ years of fake classes to keep players eligible in turn making those players ineligible and every single game those 20+ years shouldn't have counted (Maybe if it were a season or 2 in which UNC didn't win it all they probably would've vacated those wins. But 20+ years of cheating is just too much to punish UNC for so might as well act like nothing happened). But since UNC exists. He should run a suicide or 2 and be given a Most Outstanding Samaratin Award for saving his girlfriends life by protecting her from incoming intruders while his car broke down in the middle of nowhere during the late night/morning hours.

Side note.) That's the story that would've come from UNC had this happened to one of its basketball players.

You have to have some serious bias if you don't think Willis was obviously driving. The way his body is positioned by the open door and that he was hammered out of his mind, easily suggests he was driving, which is terrifying considering how messed up he was in that video.

If the kid doesn't play sports, no one on here gives a damn about protecting him. I don't know what the proper punishment is but he deserves a suspension.

Yeah he just mysteriously wound up in a neighborhood 100+ miles away, passed out cold the wide open drivers door of his
car, lying in the road at 4:30 am, admitting to be wasted, with his girlfriend in the front passenger seat.

How many times did your girlfriend ride shotgun with another man at the wheel?

Thank God for rational people. I can't stand the type of fans who cannot acknowledge a mistake or wrongdoing by a player/coach. It's the crap that UNC fans do with the academic scandal. No one on here should be doing that with this incident. Willis was obviously driving and it's pretty pathetic to see what he did and terrifying to think he could have killed someone.

A person would have to be very delusional or very stupid in order to believe any other scenario other than Willis was driving and passed out and fell out of the car.

I think it's a pretty big leap to just assume he was driving or even intended to drive. There are any number of reasons to go to your car other than to drive. Even if he intended to drive, maybe he realized at the last minute that he shouldn't. I'd rather deal with the actual facts. He got arrested for AI. Make him run till he pukes, maybe suspend him a game or two tops and move on.

WHAT? You think it's a big leap that he was driving? What scenario do you think happened to lead to him passed out drunk as if he fell outside the driver side door in the middle of the road with his girlfriend in the passenger side and no one else around? Do you think Willis had parked his car there earlier and was coming back to try and find a Redbox movie that fell between the seats? [laughing]

Ridiculous

Derek isn't being afforded any breaks that aren't given to everyone else in this situation. You can't charge someone for DUI unless they're actually caught driving. It's the law, and rightfully so. JMHO.

Not true at all.

My buddy got a DUI for being drunk and sleeping in the backseat of his car and had the keys in the ignition to stay warm. He was in the backseat parked in a hotel parking lot, not driving and still got a DUI.

You can get a DUI for being drunk and having the keys in your hand. The vehicle doesn't have to be moving for you to get one.

Dang dude, fight for US rights too. Good stuff...
Better than me have fought for those rights, and died too. So I do what little I can to make sure their sacrifice wasn't made in vain.

But I understand that patriotism isn't popular these days too. One of the things I hate about my generation.

You "ain't" NEVER lied. It sickens me how little many if not most young people could care about anything patriotic. It was my job to instill this country's founding principles to my children. I still have time but at this point I am nearly a failure. That is a shame I hope I don't have to take to the grave. The United States has always been a Shining City on a Hill...these days it's an also ran...

First off, when I wrote that the video hadn't gone public and details weren't as clear. Second of all, I still want to know where he got drunk. That's the key to whether he was driving or not. If he got drunk somewhere nearby, then in all likelihood he walked to his car and passed out before he was able to drive if that was even his intent. His intent could have just as easily been to sit there and sober up. If he got drunk somewhere else and ended up there, then yes, very likely he drove there.

It's stupid and looks bad either way, but one is a lot worse than the other.

It really is disgusting. My peers in college always made fun of me because I actually love my country. The thing that really bothered me about it was theyre distaste for their homeland. Whether you like it or not, if you were born here this is your home.

If it makes you feel better it is awfully hard to be patriotic these days with the people we have in Washington. They get further and further from the constitution every year, and it scares the crap out of me. This country was founded on mostly great principles, but you tend to forget them when everyone's crying about their sexual identity and their hurt feelings.

But I digress.

Agree with this post -
I have a harsher view on the potential of Derek drinking and driving; but this is a fair statement. I do believe he drove, and as I've said before, will gladly eat crow if wrong.
@KopiKat also made an excellent post on this - and I'm hoping he is correct. I like Derek, would hate to see something ruin his senior year. But if he were driving.......harsh discipline is necessary. I'd say the same of my own son or daughter.

Yea I agree. If he was driving the punishment needs to be much harsher. I don't necessarily just mean if he gets charged with DUI either. I don't think that's going to happen either way. Because of the circumstances it would be very difficult to actually prove in court but if he admits to Cal that he was, the punishment needs to be harsher than if he wasn't.

Really? You think it a "leap" to think someone found on the road next to the open driver side door of his car probably was either driving or intended to drive? Good lord, talk about sticking your head in the sand. Yeah, I'm sure your take on that would be exactly the same if it'd been a UL, Duke or UNC player, right?

Look, I'll fully acknowledge that it's "possible" that intent to drive had nothing to do with why he was found in that situation. But I think anyone with common sense who's not been stricken with terminal blue blinder bias disease knows the truth is "probably" something different.

The only thing that really matters is if Wills can understand what could have happened. Many were not forunate enough to pass out before getting behind the wheel only to destroy theirs and others's lives because of a bad decision. But if anyone on here has not had a similar situation growing up, you were either very lucky or very mature at that age. Besides, the other rumor is after watching the new guys shoot threes, it drove him to drinking. :)

Watched a co-worker (in Cyprus) get arrested while standing outside the car. He had put the keys in to turn on the radio (accessory not run) while we waited for a cab. Got off because the breathalyzer was not calibrated.

If true your buddy could have beat the charge easily. Sleeping in the back seat of a car with the engine running to stay warm isn't Driving Under the Influence. DUI is one of the hardest charges to prove unless the officer catches the perp in the act of operating the vehicle.

That's why they didn't charge Derek with a DUI. They weren't sure he was the last to drive the car. It looks as though it was him but like the police I can't prove it. Either way he's in deep **** and I'm not talking about a DUI. He's got a big hole to dig himself out of. We'll just have to wait and see if he gets the chance.

I'm a firm believer in second chances for anyone, not just Willis. Sure hope he comes out of this changed for the better.

Cases like these are EXACTLY why our contition states you're innocent until proven guilty. And which one of the Rafter's posters thinks they command more respect or authority than the constitution? Apparently a lot...

As others have said there are countless reasons why Willis could have gone to his car. Personally, I know several parties I had been drinking at to go to my car to grab a can of chew- really nice after a few drinks. Or some gum, or my phone that I forgot, or more drinks, you get the point.

Cal will handle this. But as far as we're concerned we can't assume that Willis was going to his car to drive. He constitution states he is innocent of that crime. So unless one of you has proof that that was his intention, stop trying to supersede the constitution. You do not command the authority to do so, none of us do.

This post is just ridiculous and we know damn well if he played for another team, you wouldn't think this...you would actually use common sense.

You clearly haven't read many of my posts. I have admantly defended innocent until proven guilty with all the cases I've seen posted on this board. Know why?

Duke Lacrosse. Look it up.

Everyone used "common sense" when convicting a bunch of innocent kids of crimes they didn't commit.

Your post is ridiculous and we damn well know if it was your kid you would want what the constitution promises them.

First of all, not everyone convicted them. That was a certain part of the political spectrum and feminazi sympathizers.

Second of all, there's a big difference in being accused of a false rape and a guy drunk off his ***, passed out, in the road, with the driver door open who "might" not have been driving.

He's not going to admit he was driving and he shouldn't for his sake. But past that, everyone (in the court of public opinion) should assume he was. If for nothing more than he was a complete dumbass.

You're kidding right? Yeah, the certain part of the political spectrum called a court of "justice" convicted them with a jury of their peers.

And no, there is no difference. Every citizen in this country, regardless of the crime, is innocent until proven guilty. That's what the constitution states, and some silly little message board poster like yourself will never supersede that doctrine in this country. No matter what your post to like ratio is.

Any American that says things that directly oppose the constitution is not an American in a metaphorical sense. What you are saying, no matter how you word it, directly contradicts the wording of the constitution that men and women have died to protect. And quite honestly, is very disrespectful and not in good taste.

Find it interesting several have mentioned UNC, Louisville, and Coach K in regards what might or might not happen if Willis was a player at one of these 3 schools.
He is not at one of those 3 schools, he is at UK. Cal will no doubt do it fairly, and he could get 1 or 3 or 5 game suspension or more or no suspension with extra running, community service, speaking to elem. school/middle school students with a " Don't be like me " theme.
Regardless, he needs to be disclipined in some way, this was a bad decision on Willis' part, and no doubt he will learn a lesson from it.
