Alright, fair enough. I don't really get involved in recruiting much at all, I wait until they are here to really think or say much about a kid. In this case, I know the kid (a little bit, I don't want to create the impression I'm an expert on Justin Powell. I am not), and because of that familiarity, I have watched all this more closely than I normally do. And what I see on this board is people being very opinionated when they haven't really seen the kid much if at all, and a lot of those opinions seem wildly off-base (one example, the local impression of him is he is a playmaker, first and foremost, and if he has a future at the D1 level, it's at the 1. He is not regarded as a shooter, despite what he did in a weekend in Atlanta, or even what he might do generally on the Nike Elite circuit). It just strikes me as odd that people seem to hold very strong opinions about something they can't really know much about.

But, as I think about it, that's probably the way recruiting works. The average poster hasn't seen any particular recruit much, if at all, and yet it's not uncommon to see pretty strong opinions.....

Fair points Mojo -- I saw those 3 point #'s in AAU ball against top level competition and was impressed , you get recruited by top 30 type teams tells me your talent is pretty dang high .. and I have no delusions about Ky talent VS the other 49 states , common sense says you must have players from EVERYWHERE , but if you can get a kid like this that will stick for hopefully 4 years and give the roster stability and experience , then take that kid . I think we are seeing you cant win it without experience , they all cant be OAD's .

This thread sums it all up for me. I apparently called it over a year ago.
You and many others. It’s clear as day to me that Antigua was the one scouting and the brains of the recruiting machine while here. Cal has gotten worse and worse each year at scouting players since he left.

Coincidentally, the team Orlando coaches at is now a top 10 team when they’ve been longtime losers.

I've tried to tread gently on this topic....the kid is from my area, I've watched him since the 5th grade. He's not good enough to come in here and get meaningful playing time over the typical Cal recruit, and he's not the kind of kid who would be content to sit and watch. If he came, my best guess is he wouldn't play a whole lot, and he'd leave in a year or two. Good kid by all accounts.

Yall should really listen to this guy. Elite evaluator.

Hes right though. Powell would have come here, probably been better than most of our freshmen but still wouldn’t have got off the bench because he isn’t one of Cal’s boys who has nba potential.

Ive seen this mentioned a lot but what about him isn’t NBA potential? Maybe he doesn’t have an elite wingspan or vertical leap (idk if either are true or not) but he has got good height for his position and he has a good body. Good qualities for a guy who is a shooter. I know defense is big for Cal but JP seems more than adequate in that regard and has shown he will go after boards.

“Probably best for both parties” - Gonzo take

How about Cal recruits basketball players like Powell and ends this infatuation with unskilled 10 year old future pros? Or would that not be good for his yearly dinner party?

If we actually did this correctly, it would be BEST for both parties.

Inagine a world where Jodie Meeks and JJ Redick would not be accepted at a basketball program like UK.

We are in the ncaa basketball version of stranger things. But thanks for promoting it so long, along with anytime transfer. You get to be the only fan in the arena at the end of the day.

What we mean is, lottery or atleast first round nba potential. Powell could certainly find his way in the league one day but I doubt he’s drafted that high. Plus he will need 2-4 years in college to get there. That’s too long in Cal’s eyes. And he’s wrong too.

He’s certainly good enough in any *other* system. Cal just doesn’t value shooters ie Dontaie Allen.
I'm not even sure what Cal's system is- we haven't ran an inbounds play in 10 years and very few offensive plays in that same time period- watch other teams and they run set plays that have a purpose to get guys shots or the ball down low

I can go along with that explanation much better than your first choice of words that so many took offense to. I think Cal has interest in Kentucky kids but they have to be kids he feels can contribute in time and feels they are willing to wait their time. Allen seems like a very talented kid who might contribute sooner if he is physically able to go.
Also if they fit his style of coaching/play.

Well my opinions have aged pretty damn well. One thing is true and I'll state it .. he comes here , he sets while guys like Boston , Clark and Askew get 2/3 a year to " work thru their inexperience " whilE guys like Dontae and Powell would get 4 minutes a game , miss a three and have a TO and be declared " typical Ky kids that cant hang " its laughable. And sad.

Sad but probably true. I just do not understand how we did not offer him. 6’6 and can shoot is a natural 2guard but Pearl has him running the point bc Cooper still not eligible.

Scrubb is suppose to have been a UK fan growing up. He comes here if Cal wants him.

But Cal doesn't care about getting in-state players, so he's probably going to UofL.
I would like to know what Cal's apparent problem is with in state players. He very rarely recruits them and if he does, and they come here, they don't get to play. And please don't say it's because they aren't good enough, because some of them are. Does Cal not realize how it would help if he would just play one Kentucky boy each game for just a very few minutes? At this point how could it hurt?

And that is a huge mistake. A Kentucky kid knows what being in a UK uniform means. Or they used too. Now, it just means you're a mercenary.
Do you seriously suggest Coach Calipari should build his team on instate recruits? Do you have any serious idea what the result would be? I'm talking about the result at the end of the season, not the result after five or six games. For obvious reasons, there isn't a major or minor sport at UK that is built primarily on instate recruits.

That’s not what he said. Nobody believes Kentucky produces kids that good. You could be at UCLA and you wouldn’t only recruit California kids. For some reason people pull a strawman here.... but arguing that the support of quality state kids on UK’s roster is some crazy idea is stupid. In what world?

Kids from Kentucky are always a plus. They get it. This has never been a difficult concept to grasp. It’s the states team, and they love a few state players. The state players are dream stories and they usually do make the team better in ways.

That’s as normal as American pie, and the fact that we have people arguing this just shows how far some people have to go to defend their left field positions with regard to Cal.

It’s the University of Kentucky. It’s an academic institution not Calipari’s NBA players club. State players should always be given a good look.

Further, you better care about the results in the first five or six games, because if you lose it can totally destroy your team early and create a pressure situation. It also allows other teams to add wins, taking away our all time accomplishments. Are you seriously okay with Kansas beating us 10 straight as long as it’s in the first 5 games? All for a probable loss in March?

Some of you need to rethink these positions. It’s gettin wild.

It's Bleacher Report (so take it with a grain of salt) but Powell ranked #34 in next year's draft

Edit: I don't know why but the link isn't embedding

And will probably move up if continues too play like this.. would have been a nice pickup for UK.
And to the few guys that keep saying do we think should build teams with Kentucky kids?
No one is saying that but it would be nice too have a couple on the team mixed in with all the one and dones.

Bruce Pearl said in a article about Powell that he loves gettlng players from Kentucky because they have high basketball IQ’s and strong fundamentals and the state is full of good high school coaches.
