If you told me last year that Barchi would have replaced Flood, Hermann, and Jordan I would have thought you were crazy. I really thought Flood bought himself two years at least with 2014, obviously there were some chinks in the armor that some insiders were aware of (but I wasn't).

I liked the Ash hire. I was unsure about the Hobbs hire, but so far that looks to be a pretty good choice. I was way wrong about Barchi w/respect to athletics though. I think Barchi really stepped up his game.
I'm excited about the commits and about what I'm hearing from Spring practice. I'm more excited about a Spring game than I've ever been. It looks, in every way I can see without seeing the results on the field, that the Ash hire was a great hire. And because it looks so good "on paper" so far, I think we can credit Hobbs made a great choice given our funding capacity (after all, on paper was all Hobbs had to go on w/Ash as Ash hasn't yet been a head coach).
Having said all that, I've learned from painful experience to not count my recruiting chickens until after NSD and I still want to see how we improve over the course of the season before I anoint Ash "the one". Not expecting us to have a great season in terms of wins/losses. But I do expect steady improvement.
I think we need to continue to land some big NJ recruits - more than just a few, in order to hold this class together. Because we know that other schools will negatively recruit us all season long, and that the season will have it's tough games for us. My thinking is that if we have enough great recruits, that they can hold each other together because they can see they can change things for RU in just that one recruiting class. And if we can beat one of the traditional power schools near the end of the season... then we can lock the entire recruiting class in.

much credit to the OP and those other Flood-keepers who have admitted their flawed thinking... but really, did those of us that thought Flood had to go think the next HC would do as well as Ash is doing?
I thought it would take more time no matter who we got.... not that it is at some super high level already. thats your opinion...read his interviews before and after. I know you have been saying that he always supported athletics full tilt but I just do not believe that. The word SUBSIDY was so prioritized during Julie's tenure it overshadowed any attempt to move the athletic department forward. If he had no confidence in her to do anything than he should have fired her in the first few months not wait 2 and half years.
Actually it was smashed with ash . I coined 'flood the dud ' term before he coached a game and took a lot of heat here for it. I must admit I wanted a guy with hc experience this time around . I knew very little about ash as mostly everyone here . Looks like ash knows what he's doing . But they still have to play the games .
You know how difficult it is to fire a protected class in this state. I think he was biding his time to totally clean house.
I wanted Flood gone for some time, and I also realize that Ash has not yet even coached a single game or signed even one of his own recruiting classes.

I am cautiously optimistic....... But if I were to bet I think The Ash hire will move us forward....

Initially I did not look at the dates and asked myself if fans have completely lost their minds. By the way, Ash has turned out to be a bust. I was an Al Golden fan as a last resort. I really wanted Bobby Petrino.

Looks like I closed out that thread on April 21st.... all I seem to remember before that was the debate about Ash joining us before the OSU bowl..... I was on the side that I thought it might have cost us a recruit or two, most felt it did not matter, and he should finish his job there.
All the positive out of fans, my cautious optimism, the optimism of others, was based on closing out last years recruiting, and the staff Ash put together.... as I said I was cautiously optimistic
The part I was cautious about was getting the team ready and game coaching.
It appears the concern was legit.

Agree. He was also too stubborn to fire his best friend in order to possibly save his own career. At least Franklin was smart enough to use a scape goat when he needed to.
Not even sure if Golden could have recruited to RU right now and there is no other reason to have him as your HC.
Dude you spend entirely too much time posting on the Rutgers board. No matter what the topic is you will be there posting. Even in the meltdown threads. Sometimes I come here to read the Rutgers perspective and that lasts about 3 posts before you chime in. Jesus Christ.

I find it interesting how attitudes were, and are now.... some unbridled optimism for sure, some not back then... many who were cautious supported other coach hires, some insisted we needed a coach with head coaching experience.
The simple fact is that while this team has pockets of talent, collectively it doesn't have enough to effectively compete in the B1G East. Situation isn't really much different than when Schiano took over in 2001, and RU fans in 2002 thru 2004 complained that we made a bad hire. Let's give Ash some time and a chance here.

100% true, but old threads are still pretty interesting.
I hopefully thought we could have been a 500 team this year but I truly believed we would be competitive. I am not willing to write off the lack of competitiveness to Flood's poor recruiting. He won 4 last year and was very close to being 500 with Wa St and Maryland games that could easily have been wins and the talent was similar. Yes he had Caroo but only in half the games and the whole secondary was a mess. That having been said, this staff needs to learn and grow into the job. Ash's first HC job is in the BIG, not an easy way to start. The question will be can they grow. This team has been badly outplayed in first quarter action all year which speaks to preparation. Ash has said on several occasions when asked about it that they have a pre game prep in place and they believe in it and will continue with it. Well, maybe it isn't working and should be changed. This staff needs to do a self evaluation that is even more intense than the one they do on the players. They seem to the right plan in place for the off field aspects of the program. They seem to be aggressive recruiters. Hopefully the talent upgrade will be significant. Then, can they improve as an in game staff. Time will tell and they deserve the few seasons it will take to accomplish it.
It's kind of fun to watch the wild swings of opinions that fans experience with incomplete data. It happened then. It's happening now.
