Pre academic scandal, my concern with replacing Flood was we wouldn't have enough money to hire someone who had aleady "done it". We'd be forced to go MAC(my preference) of first time coach who would have to learn on the job. I am very happy to have been very wrong. Of course, he still has to prove he can be a head coach on Saturdays but the amount of positive change and buzz he has brought to this program in such a short time is light years ahead of what I believed any first time coach could do here. Happy days.

Forget about being wrong, which I was. I'm still in shock. From the AD hire forward it just seems to me we have accumulated true professionals. Both for football and basketball. I understand we haven't won a single game yet in either sport, but from all appearances, we have coaches who know what they are doing. I 've not felt that way in some time. In another thread people were wondering if the old collective belief that coaches need NJ ties to recruit here is really true, given Coach Ash's recent sucesses. Perhaps what is more important is being the "real deal." People recognize authenticity; when someone really knows what they are doing. That might be what we see occurring. Could be that Coach Ash is genuinely the "real deal" and NJ coaches and players see that. Would be nice if true.

I don't think I was "wrong", but how can any long time RU fan not have reservations about anything athletic? So far, it looks like things are definitely going a lot better than many expected.
Agree and though Ash received a good salary , a name brand would have cost more and I can't say for sure if RU had the money to pay for an established HC to coach RU FB.

But with what's happening with the RU FB and MBB programs, seems like RU has enough money to field two competitive programs , going by the type of staffs being hired by both of those programs.

I don't even remember how I felt about the hire because I was just happy about the fire. But right or wrong as of this point I just feel really good about things.

We may have...who knows how serious it would have gotten with Narduzzi...but Hobbs apparently liked what he saw in Ash.

its not about right or wrong but its shocking how many people were still supportive of Jordan and Flood as guys who could get it done....I was guilty somewhat with alot of support for Julie but looking back across the board we are in much better shape with our two big sports and AD. I also dont feel Barchi had some awakening or always was pro sports. I believe he got stern lectures and pressure and he finally had to bite the bullet and open the wallet and go scorched earth

When Ash gets this thing turned around in this talent and media market RU becomes a destination job that he already has. Hope he stays a long time.

I was concerned with his recruiting skills base on the last year recruiting but I see so many NJ recruits leaning to Rutgers and with the current commits, I'm not worried anymore.

Remember your ash will get us trashed thread abd how you said you were smarter then the rest of the board and you were coining that phrase.
You look pathetic now.

To be clear, I wasn't unhappy about the Ash hire. I actually loved it. My premise was leading up to the firing point, again pre scandal.

I must admit I was concerned about hiring Ash, but considered him as good of a candidate as
anyone being mentioned for the job.
Replacing Flood was necessary in my opinion and I had supported him until the off field problems made his removal a must.

Ash wasn't my top choice but I am happy to have him. I was hoping RU would go steal a known successful head coach from another P5 school and open the check book to $5m a year. That was my wish, but happy with what Ash is doing.

I was wrong about Barchi. Made a big change starting at the top and it looks like his AD choice was a good one.

So far we have played 0 games under the new coaches. Looks great so far, BUT we have yet to play one game.

Too early for right or wrong based on new coaches. One coukd say keeping EJ& Flood would have been wrong based on their results.

But it's nice being optimistic about the HC and the new HCs in FB & MBB seem to have had more support when they were hired than Kyle or Eddie did.
Both had a lot of RU fans against their hire.

I was for Jordan being hired, but had reservations over Flood's hiring.
Did support Flood's hire because of the commits it kept and that proved not to be the ideal way to hire a HC.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about the Ash hire. Winning a bunch of games will bolster my opinion.

Not that it maters at this point - and it's a completely useless thing to debate - but I don't put the Flood supporters and EJ supporters in quite the same category. Flood had some success, including bowl games and a surprising 2014 campaign. The writing was on the wall towards the end, but one could make a plausible (though admittedly very weak) argument for keeping him for another year.

EJ accomplished zilch, and was literally rewriting the record books for futility (not an easy thing to do with a program with the track record of RU Men's bball). There was no reasonable case for keeping him, and I will never understand the posters who argued so vehemently to give him another year.

...add 'very, very, very' to the "very" towards the end of your first paragraph, take out 'the' and add 'every' inbetween "on" and "wall" and you'll be stylin'.

A guy from a winning program was always my preference over a MAC coach. But I wasn't sure Ash was the right guy when he was hired.

Then I heard him speak and understood better what he was to the programs where he has been. Then it became much more clear. Hobbs crushed the hire and the results will follow. I believe it more than any coach we have had now, including GS.

My first choice was Aranda but I never had a problem hiring a coordinator without HC experience and gave the reasoning and the examples behind it. I was perfectly fine with the Ash hire, a coordinator under Bielema at Wisconsin and Meyer at OSU was more than qualified for me. I also didn't need the big name or the NJ ties which I've always said is a bonus not a requirement. Plus a coordinator from the Meyer tree is a very logical place to look considering the results from the other branches from that tree. I don't get when some classify it as outside the box. It seems pretty inside the box actually to go for a top assistant to a big time winning coach especially on the level of a Meyer or Saban.

When the staff was fully hired, I said I think it has the potential to be our best recruiting staff save Hafley/Angelichio but with the possibility of maybe being better. I don't follow recruiting much at all, care more about coaching/development, but it's nice to see those who do getting excited at the names being mentioned and signed on.

All that being said, everything from the staff to recruiting is all a means to an end, which is winning. I generally keep an even keel. I don't get down when everyone is screaming about recruits or lack of big names for coaches or recruits but I also don't float in the air when everyone is excited. There's only one result I'm waiting on and that's lots of Ws. If and when we start doing that consistently, then I'll be very happy.

I had the same wish here. I wanted Mullen in a bad way and 4mil would have done it. Second was Dave Aranda, Ash was no where on my short list. I doubt many did. Must say I am pleasantly surprised with how well things are going so far. It's great to have a coach who actually talks football and in football terms when being interviewed. You just get the feeling that this guy really knows what he's talking about and has an actual detailed plan on how to succeed. I didn't quite get that feeling from the last guy whenever he spoke or through his actions.

Lemme see if I can explain the differences. To begin, Flood was handed a team in relatively good shape and a monster recruiting class. Not coming off any scandal, but instead coming off a coach so good he went to the pros. Jordan was handed a massive scandal and players who were allowed to transfer without sitting out a year. Not exactly the same situation.

People who were saying keep Jordan were basically in two camps. One argued that he deserved a full year with a decently complete team, and that 2016/17 represented that year. The other argued that unless we could get a really good replacement with the funds available, it might be better to keep EJ another year and get more funds in the piggy bank. When Hurley fell through (thank goodness), many argued that we were mistaken not to go for one more year with the current crew.

What we see now in bball is that the money was there to put together an absolutely top flight staff. I was a bit dubious at first on Pikiell until I read about what a great guy he is. And now, it is clear that we had the funds to go to a complete set of first class assistants. So as a person in the second group above (let's only do it if we can do it well), I'm really happy that we made the move.

With regard to Flood, I was for the move pretty much no matter what. Ash was not my first choice as I wanted to see a guy who had done it all. But what is clear is that Ash took notes on everything everywhere he was, and was ready to take control.

And so, I'm excited for the year for both sports. What I want to see is smart, hard, aggressive play with lots of passion in both sports. Wins would be great, but I'll settle in year one for looking like a well-coached, passionate ball club.
