Back in my day. The wind blew in our faces both ways walking home in 2 feet of snow with bread sacks in our moon boots!! Uphill both ways!! And we still went to school!! That's how I remember it and tell it anyways!! Lol
Don’t forget carrying milk in your cupped hands as we had no buckets!

We have a crazy weather phenomena that occurs just about every winter. It usually happens when we have several inches or more of snow. The wind will kick up and the temperature will go from 30 degrees to over 50 degrees in 30 minutes or less. In town we are not known for being windy, but in these instances wind will gust up to 50-60 mph. It will go on for all day or night too. Our house is in town and it is only about 800 feet in elevation (The Columbia River goes right through town). 12 miles from us on top of our ski hill at an elevation of 7000 feet the gusts during these events will easily be over 150 mph. The worse one was in 2008. It happened the first Sunday in January. We had over 12 inches of snow on the ground. When the wind came up and the temperature rose it was like putting a blow torch to all that snow. Strong winds and wet soggy ground are not a good combination for fence posts. We lost three quarters of our backyard fence and we lost the whole backside (west) of our house's roof. The wind blew all day. I've repaired our fence so many times over the years that I finally got smart and now replace the 4 x 4 treated fence posts with a heavy duty metal fence post designed to use on 6 foot cedar fences. (The wood posts snap off at ground level like toothpicks). Wherever you live Mother Nature is going to kick you in the *** from time to time.

After over 30 years of Santa Anna winds every fall (and other times of the year) in SoCal, it is pretty hard for me to get spun up about the wind since I moved back here (even high winds forecast for tomorrow). This excludes fear of tornados of course.

I wanted to buy a Harley Fat Boy because I liked the look/features, but was advised I would have to take more riding days off during the Santa Annas because the solid disk wheels get buffeted in high winds. Since I lived in a very high wind area by the Cajon Pass, I bought a Heritage that has spoked wheels.

I would drive to palm spring from Nebraska a few time, and I don't remember the highway down there, but tumble weeds were not tumbling..they would just sail horizontal about ten foot in the air it was just constant wind

Only in Lincoln. Lame
Well the risk of a school bus blowing over is real and the winds are expected to be at their peak I believe about the time school would be letting out. Most kids would be fine but once again we have to decide school policies based on the weakest links. I'm not sure what parents who both work outside the home do when they call school off. It's a no win situation for administrators and they have to try to keep ALL the kids safe. I'm not sure which is worse. Kids home alone or kids out in 80 mph winds.

The only in Lincoln was in response to the masks blowing off. The mask ******** is what I said was lame.

I imagine there is a little influence from the unfortunate weather in Kentucky last week.

With remote learning in place, I don't have a problem with this. My kids still have school, the timing of the high winds is a little scary, as it's right around dismissal.

One day is not a big deal. Weeks and months of home learning was horrible.

Would really suck if today is your trash day.
Or if you have a yard full of Christmas displays.

I didn't have so much problem riding when the Santa Wind was constant as you mention. Just lean into it. It was the gusting Santa Annas that were terrifying. Lean into the wind and it stops and you jet over into the oncoming lane.

I've never heard of such a thing, but I guess if you're a climate change alarmist, you like this move.

As a claim adjuster of about 15 years, if the winds they are predicting do come to fruition, I guarantee you I am going to have overturned vehicles next week on my plate to handle, and if school busses are going to be running, I will see one of those to. Cancelling was the right move.

In light of what recently happened in Kentucky, I get it.

Our school did the right thing. Not cancelling school, but said they are cancelling all afternoon bus services. So.... get your *** to school... we don't give a **** how you get home... and if you die that's your problem. RollingLaugh

It is trash day, and yes, my neighbors will have newfound Christmas displays in their yard. Hopefully they are fond of a brown bottle or two and looking to wrap presents in a microwave and snow blower manual.

Well they're now forecasting 80 mph wind for tomorrow for a large swath of the midwest. I don't blame them for calling off school. A smaller kid can't even stand up in that kind of wind not to mention the risk of flying objects.
Uh -move out of the way of flying object and suck it up. Continued pussification of society. And if they can’t stand up -crawl

29 mph sustained wind at my place with gusts to 38. It is gradually gotten stronger since 5 am. Can smell moisture in the air so maybe we'll get some much needed rain

Not sure if this was just round 1 of the wind and more to come but we did spike at 51 mph so far
