I don't understand your post. Owning this fund isn't about total return, just for income. 7-8% tax-free is like a 12% annual return. Secondly, the risk of losing principle is less than the risk of owning a stock.
Dividends are not free money falling from the sky. If you get a 7% dividend, the value of your fund goes down by 7%. Look up the data on Morningstar. The funds with the highest dividends are routinely the worst performing funds with total returns (which is what matters). Dividends are forced selling of your principle at best, and a total scam at worst.

A MM fund is better than most high-dividend funds. Might as well just keep your money in cash.

You are partly correct. If you look at this fund's distribution history, it's been all income distributions until this year when its now 50/50 income/ROC. I've owned NHS for many, many years with an 11+% monthly distribution that is sometimes all income and sometimes partly ROC. It's given me returns far more than I ever invested and still maintaining that rate of return.

What is the expense ration on NXJ? My Merrill Edge account is showing 4% gross expense ratio, can't imagine it's that high. But the tax free dividend of 7% if probably greatly reduced by a very high expense ratio

Speaking about retirement, have you ever looked into an annuity? Just a regular one (not one of those pretend investment options). I've always been told that annuities are evil and a rip-off. True or BS? :)

Looking at Morningstar's total returns chart (that includes dividends and distributions), NXJ has returned a total of 2.4% over the past 5 years. So if you invested $10,000 then, you would have $10,241 now (principle + dividends). So it has gotten CRUSHED by a money market fund.

Over the past 10 years:
Total return = 34.3%
$10,000 then = $13,430 (principle + dividends)

Yikes! :)

I started getting annuity distributions about 3 years ago. It is a Prudential annuity with a death benefit. It had a daily step up, by the time I started distributions it had over 60 locked in step ups. After the 7 year vesting period, it distributes 5% annually (distributed monthly) on the step up amount. Any monies left when I pass are given to my beneficiaries based on the NAV (not the stepped up value). I haven't seen another annuity that does daily step ups. The closest was one I saw that did monthly step ups.

But if you're interested in income, the total return is irrelevant since there is no plan to sell. The 7% tax-free distribution can theoretically go on indefinitely. BTW, I don't own NXJ but do own several closed end funds that provide a nice income.

VLY. Valley National. I guess it's considered a regional bank? 6B market cap.

Been OK. Original position started Aug 2024. Up 16%. Plus 4% div. That sounds like slight underperformance.

Was thinking maybe sell? But it is pushing right up against 3 year highs. 13x p/e. .84 price to book.

Going to hang in a bit longer. Truthfully given the break out is right at my fingertips, a 20ish% one year return in the previous 12 months is pretty good. (I say "pretty good" because that is under performing the overall market.)
Tanked after this post, caught in the private equity bankruptcy exposure downdraft.

But has bounced all the way back including 5% off of earnings this morning.

$11 was support back in 2022, it fell below it, and has been resistance since. Needs to break out past that level. Currently $10.65.

4% div.

Tom Lee has been high on regional banks for a while. I probably need to do some research on them. Makes sense if rates continue to drift lower.

As for me, SLB is finally showing some life. Probably needs to get to $38 for my leaps to flip positive.

ill add my two cents, SPIAs (single premium immediate annuity) is the only annuity id buy. they are transparent, cost effective, competitive with other SPIA. most insurance companies try to lead you elsewhere (like variable annuities, whole life)

FYI - Might be time to start buying DECK:

Deckers Outdoor
— The owner of the Hoka and Ugg shoe brands saw shares slide about 12% after its revenue forecast fell short of expectations. Deckers expects full-year revenue of roughly $5.35 billion, while analysts surveyed by LSEG estimated $5.45 billion. The footwear giant earned $1.82 per share on revenue of $1.43 billion, beating analysts’ estimates of $1.58 per share on revenue of $1.42 billion, per LSEG.

Any thoughts on the reorganized WOLF?
In short, their tech is A+. Their prob was their former CEO and CFO got bamboozled by a predatory lender of sorts, financing terms and timing were flat out terrible. WOLF spent borrowed capital on building two new production facilities whose output was way too late to satisfy the debt to build them. So bankruptcy allowed them to escape that debt, at least a good portion. Now the focus is on getting those two new facilities making SiC wafers and chips. The market is there. Folks tend to look at the EV opportunity, but fail to see the potential opportunity with power products applications. I “think” the next three years will see WOLF gain traction.

Good to know, thanks! The new stock is pretty cheap. Probably worth a swing.

I saw that, would be good if they added staking which is still around 7%

Gotta love Fridays like this:

U.S. stocks closed at new heights on Friday as cool inflation data spurred optimism among investors that the Federal Reserve can stay on its rate-cutting path, boosting the U.S. economy and justifying higher valuations for equities.

The Dow Jones Industrial average rose 472.51 points, or 1.01%, to 47,207.12, securing its first close above the 47,000 level ever. The S&P 500 added 0.79% to 6,791.69, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.15% to 23,204.87. All three major averages closed at records.

ZM getting love from multiple angles this week. Josh Brown bought it, and Carter Worth notes the chart is in a bearish to bullish reversal. Thought the risk very asymmetric, with downside risk low relative to upside potential.

Karen Finerman notes that it's a 14x P/E, and if you pull out the boat load of cash on the balance sheet it's sub 10x.

Hasn't shown any growth but Brown thought it has some products out there which could lead to growth going fwd.

Linkster wasn't a fan though.

If you believe ZM might achieve some unexpected growth, this is the perfect opportunity for Jan 2028 leaps. Maximize any rally and you can let it ride for a good 18 months without time decay really becoming an issue.

Link is too conservative with this type of idea. Sometimes you just need to take a swing.

Oddly she love’s turnaround stories. So she is often willing to look fwd when current conditions aren’t great not in this case.

What strike would purchase?

I normally try to stick close to the money, so maybe $90 (with the possibility of doing with $100 if the open interest is significantly higher). Obviously, it depends on how much you want to invest.

I recently bought Jan 2028 calls for CMG and NKE (at $40 and $70 strikes).

My buddy has me looking at ACMR. Semi conductor play. 23x P/E. Just broke out past 2022 levels and now at (just off) ATH's. 2.4B market cap. MS has a buy on it.

Has significant China exposure. So might be jumping tomorrow.

I would love to find a few more semi plays. ACMR joined the S&P 600 last month. Wall Street analysts are positive on it:

MSFT stock price creeping up this evening no doubt because it is earnings release week and the gamblers (aka short term traders) are likely getting their positions ready so Wednesday will once again be a little wild which is what happened last quarter.
And don’t forget all you budding Dan Iveses out there, MSFT isn’t just the monopoly you know and trust (sorta) but it can be your quantum play as well.🤷‍♂️🤔😬

Down to 5:

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday confirmed that the list of candidates to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has been winnowed down to five, with the winner likely to be named by the end of the year.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Bessent said the finalists are current Fed Governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Governor Kevin Warsh and BlackRock executive Rick Rieder, according to several media outlets.

I trimmed back a couple weeks ago but looks like I should have trimmed back more.
